Put ordinary liquid laundry detergent in the washer’s main-wash detergent compartment, usually marked “II” or “Main Wash.” If the drawer has a removable liquid-detergent cup, install it before pouring in detergent. Use the prewash compartment only when a prewash cycle is selected and the washer’s manual says to do so.
Which compartment is for liquid detergent?
On a washing machine with a detergent drawer, the correct location for liquid detergent is normally the main-wash compartment. Manufacturers commonly label it II or Main Wash. This applies to many front-load and top-load machines, but the drawer layout is not universal, so identify the compartment by its marking rather than by its position.
Do not confuse the main-wash section with the smaller prewash section or the fabric-softener section. Fabric softener compartments are often marked with a flower symbol, while prewash sections may be marked I. Your model may use different symbols or a different arrangement; the owner’s manual is the final authority.

How to use a liquid-detergent drawer correctly
- Find the main-wash marking. Pull out the drawer and look for II, Main Wash, or the wording shown in your manual.
- Check for a liquid cup. Many drawers include a removable cup, flap, or insert inside the main-wash compartment. It may be a separate plastic piece rather than the full drawer.
- Install the cup in its specified position. LG explains that its liquid cup keeps main-wash liquid detergent from being dispensed with prewash detergent. The cup’s shape and position vary by model.
- Measure detergent according to the detergent label and washer instructions. Pour it into the cup or main-wash section without exceeding the indicated maximum line.
- Close the drawer fully and start the selected cycle. A drawer that is not seated correctly can prevent the dispenser from working as intended.
Samsung’s instructions also direct users of compatible front-load and top-load machines to place liquid detergent in the liquid cup in the main compartment. LG similarly describes a removable cup in the main-wash compartment. These directions support the same practical rule: use the marked main-wash liquid-dosing area, not an arbitrary part of the drawer.

Why the liquid-detergent cup matters during prewash
Prewash changes the timing of detergent release. A prewash compartment is intended to release detergent during the initial, separate wash phase. Main-wash detergent is intended for the later principal wash. If liquid detergent is poured into a main-wash section without the required insert, some machines may release it with the prewash water instead.
LG USA Support states: “When adding liquid detergent, make sure that the liquid detergent cup located in the main wash liquid detergent compartment is in place to prevent the main wash detergent from being dispensed with a prewash detergent.” This is model-specific guidance, not a claim that every washer uses an identical mechanism.
If you use a prewash cycle
- Read the cycle instructions for your exact washer before adding detergent.
- Use the prewash compartment only when the prewash option is selected and the manual calls for detergent there.
- Keep the main-wash liquid cup installed if the manufacturer specifies one.
- Do not assume that liquid in the main-wash section will remain there until the main wash on every model.
If you never use prewash
For a normal cycle without prewash, the usual setup is simpler: install the liquid cup if supplied, add liquid detergent to the main-wash compartment, and start the cycle. Keeping the cup fitted is still sensible when the manufacturer designed it as part of the liquid-dosing system.

Can you put liquid detergent directly in the drum?
Do not treat direct-to-drum placement as a universal rule for liquid detergent. The manufacturer instructions considered here place ordinary liquid detergent in a designated main-wash compartment or cup where one is provided.
Drum placement depends on the detergent form and the washer’s design. Samsung specifically instructs users to put pods directly in the empty tub before adding clothes, rather than in the drawer. That pod instruction should not be generalized to ordinary liquid detergent. Beko’s guidance also distinguishes fluid gel from capsule-like gel and accounts for whether a liquid compartment exists.

If the manual says that your washer has no liquid cup, or directs a particular liquid product into the tub, follow that instruction. The key distinction is not simply “liquid versus solid”; it is the exact detergent form and the dispensing system in your washer.

Front-load, top-load and automatic-dosing differences
Front-load washers
Front-load machines commonly use a pull-out drawer with separate sections for prewash, main wash and softener. In models that provide a liquid cup, place it in the main-wash section before adding detergent. The door location does not change the basic identification method: read the symbols and manual.
Top-load washers
Top-load designs vary more visibly. Some have a drawer near the top panel, while others use a dispenser that is part of the lid or tub assembly. Samsung’s guidance covers liquid detergent cups in compatible top-load as well as front-load machines. Use the marked main-wash location rather than assuming that every top-loader accepts liquid detergent in the tub.
Automatic-dosing machines
Some washers draw detergent from a larger reservoir and calculate or apply a dose automatically. In that case, do not pour detergent into a normal drawer section unless the manual identifies it as the correct reservoir. Confirm which compartment is for detergent, whether the system accepts your detergent type, and how the dosing setting is configured.

How to identify the right compartment when markings are unclear
- Remove the drawer as far as the design permits and inspect each section for I, II, Main Wash, a flower symbol, or other printed icons.
- Look for a removable plastic cup, hinged flap, or level marking inside the section marked II.
- Search the washer manual by its exact model number, not just the brand name.
- Compare the manual’s drawer diagram with the physical drawer. Some models place sections in a different order from other machines in the same product family.
- If the drawer has no clear main-wash section, pause before adding detergent and use the model’s dispensing instructions.
Drawer position alone is unreliable. Two washers can place the main-wash section on different sides, and a replacement drawer may look different from the original while using the same markings.

Pouring liquid into the fabric-softener section
Fabric softener is released at a different stage and is not a substitute for detergent. If you have not started the cycle, remove and rinse the drawer, then put detergent in the main-wash section. If a cycle has already begun, consult the washer manual before interrupting it.

Detergent in the prewash section may be used during a stage you did not intend to run, or may not be used as expected when prewash is off. Move it to the main-wash compartment for a standard cycle.

Leaving out the liquid cup
On models designed to use an insert, omitting it can change when liquid detergent is released. Refit the cup before the next load. If the cup is missing or damaged, identify the exact washer model before buying a replacement; a universal insert is not established as compatible with every drawer.
Putting ordinary liquid detergent in the drum because pods go there
Pods and liquid detergent do not necessarily share placement instructions. Follow the liquid-detergent and washer directions separately.
Assuming every washer drawer works the same way
Brand families and model generations can use different inserts, compartments and automatic dispensers. The model manual takes precedence over a generic diagram or advice for another machine.
When a replacement liquid-detergent cup is needed
A missing liquid cup can prevent the washer from dispensing liquid detergent at the intended stage on models that require one. LG documents the cup as a model-dependent accessory. Before purchasing a replacement, record the complete washer model number and compare the part description with the manufacturer’s documentation or an authorized appliance-parts source.
- Confirm that the part is for the exact model, not merely the same brand.
- Check whether the washer uses a cup, flap, siphon insert or an entire replacement drawer.
- Do not assume a “universal” cup will maintain the correct detergent timing.
- After installation, verify that the drawer closes fully and that the insert sits in its designed position.

Bottom line for everyday use
For most washing machines, liquid detergent goes in the main-wash compartment marked II or Main Wash, using the supplied liquid cup or insert. Keep prewash detergent in its own compartment when prewash is selected. Put pods or capsule-like products in the tub only when their specific instructions require it. Because drawer layouts and dispensing systems vary, the exact washer manual is the deciding reference whenever the markings, insert or detergent form are different.
