You can play Magic: The Gathering online with MTG Arena, Magic Online, or SpellTable, or play with physical cards at a local game store, organized event, or home game. New players can start at a Magic Academy event, while the official Wizards Store and Event Locator is the fastest way to find current stores, dates, formats, and entry details near you.
Choose how you want to play
Magic offers several different experiences rather than one universal online or in-person venue. MTG Arena is the easiest digital starting point, Magic Online is aimed at long-established competitive formats, and SpellTable lets people play tabletop Magic remotely. In person, stores run beginner lessons, set-release events, multiplayer nights, and format-specific tournaments. You can also play casually with friends at home.
Your best first choice depends on whether you want a guided lesson, immediate digital play, physical cards, a particular format, or an organized event with scheduled rounds.

MTG Arena: the simplest digital starting point
MTG Arena is Wizards’ digital collectible card game for PC, Mac, iOS, and Android. It is free to download and includes a tutorial, so you can learn the basic turn structure and card interactions before entering regular matches. Arena also offers ranked play and in-game events once you are ready for more structured competition.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Optional in-game purchases are available, but Wizards says purchases are not required to access the full depth of gameplay. That makes Arena the most practical option if you want to begin without buying physical cards or arranging a play group. Check the official Arena Getting Started guide for the currently supported devices and installation steps before downloading.
Arena is a fully digital game: it does not use your physical collection, and cards you own on paper do not automatically become cards in your Arena account. Choose it when convenience, tutorials, and playing against an online matchmaking pool matter more than handling real cards.
Magic Online: a PC platform for established formats
Magic Online is Wizards’ original digital platform. Its official homepage positions it for players interested in formats such as Legacy and Modern, making it a better fit when you specifically want those long-running formats online.

SpellTable: tabletop Magic played remotely
Wizards lists SpellTable as an option for playing tabletop Magic online. This is the route to investigate when you already have physical cards and want to see opponents’ real boards rather than use a digital card collection.
The official homepage does not provide enough detail to state which cameras, lighting, play surfaces, software setup, or account terms are currently supported. Review the service’s current instructions before buying equipment or promising a remote game. SpellTable is therefore a format and setup choice, not a substitute for the beginner tutorial and automated rules handling that Arena provides.

Where to play Magic in person
Magic Academy: learn without bringing a deck
Magic Academy is the clearest first stop for someone who has never played. Its Learn to Play session teaches the basic rules with simple decks. The Deck Building session teaches how to assemble a first deck. Wizards says the required materials are provided, so you do not need to own cards before attending.

If you want an instructor-led introduction rather than learning alone through an app, look for a scheduled Magic Academy event in the locator.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

Prerelease: play with a new set before its general release
A Prerelease is a local-store event built around the newest Magic set. You sign up at a participating game store and play using a Prerelease Pack. Because each event is tied to a particular set and store schedule, use the event listing to verify the date, registration process, format, and fee before traveling.
Prerelease is a natural next step after learning the rules, but it is not the same as a beginner lesson. Read the listing carefully so you know what event you are joining and what deck or product the organizer expects.
Commander Party: multiplayer Commander
Commander Party events are multiplayer events using a Commander deck. They suit players who specifically want the social, multiplayer format rather than a one-on-one tournament. You will need a Commander deck appropriate for the event; Magic Academy’s supplied teaching materials do not cover this requirement.
Standard Showdown and Store Championship
Standard Showdown and Store Championship are store events for Standard players. The official event information specifies a Standard-legal deck for both, so confirm that every card in your deck is legal in the current Standard format before registering.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
For Store Championship, Wizards lists tokens, counters, sleeves, and a playmat as optional equipment. These items can make physical play easier, but the listing does not describe them as mandatory. Ask the store whether it supplies anything at the venue and whether its local rules impose additional requirements.
Casual games with friends
You do not need an organized event to play Magic. The official site also describes playing at home with friends. If you want a little structure, the Magic Companion app can organize a home tournament for up to eight friends. A casual game lets the group agree on a format, number of players, and time without following a store’s event schedule.
A physical starter or introductory product can help a group continue playing at home, but buying one is optional for Magic Academy because that event provides its required materials. For any other event, follow the deck requirement in the listing rather than assuming an introductory product is legal for that format.
How to find a local store or event
The Wizards Store and Event Locator is the authoritative starting point for nearby organized play. Wizards says the locator can search by city, address, postal code, or region and filter by event type, format, date, or date range. Listings can include the store’s details and an event’s date, time, location, and possible entry fee.

- Open the Store and Event Locator.
- Enter a city, street address, postal code, or region. Broaden the search if no nearby results appear.
- Filter by the activity you want, such as Magic Academy, Prerelease, Commander Party, Standard Showdown, or Store Championship.
- Check the format and date range so you do not select an event for a different ruleset or an old date.
- Open the store listing and record the event time, address, registration instructions, and any displayed entry fee.
- Contact the store before traveling to confirm that the event is still scheduled, registration is open, capacity remains, and the current cost matches the listing.
Store schedules, capacity, and fees can change after an event is posted. The locator is the practical discovery tool, but the store is the final source for the details of its own event.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use Magic Companion at participating stores
The Magic Companion app helps participants join limited and constructed events at participating stores, track matches, and receive a notification when a round begins. A Wizards Account is required for in-store events in the app.
Install and sign in before arriving if you plan to use Companion. For a home game, the app can also organize a tournament for as many as eight friends. Its availability and features depend on the event and participating store, so keep the store’s instructions available if the organizer uses another registration method.

What to confirm before you go
For a first lesson
- Confirm that the store has a scheduled Magic Academy Learn to Play or Deck Building session.
- Ask when the session starts and how long that store expects it to last; Wizards’ estimate is approximately one to two hours.
- Do not buy a deck solely to attend: Wizards says Magic Academy provides the required materials.
For a format-specific event
- Read the event’s format and deck requirement. Commander Party requires a Commander deck, while Standard Showdown and Store Championship require a Standard-legal deck.
- Confirm registration, capacity, start time, location, and entry fee directly with the store.
- Bring only equipment the organizer allows. For Store Championship, tokens, counters, sleeves, and a playmat are listed as optional.
For online play
- Use Arena if you want a guided tutorial and broad device support without purchasing physical cards.
- Use Magic Online when access to its PC platform and formats such as Legacy or Modern is the priority; verify current service and pricing details first.
- Use SpellTable when you want to play with paper cards remotely, but verify the current camera and account setup before scheduling a game.
Which option fits your goal?
| Your priority | Best starting point | What to verify |

A note about Arena and store integration in 2026
Wizards announced WPN-linked Arena features with a rollout dated October 1, 2026. The announcement describes achievements tied to attending sanctioned in-person events and a Favorite Stores screen for store updates. Treat those features as announcement-dependent: verify their current availability and behavior in Arena before planning around them. The dated announcement is available at Wizards’ Play Network integration page.
Bottom line
Choose MTG Arena for the fastest guided online start, Magic Online for its established PC formats, and SpellTable for remote games with paper cards. For physical play, start with Magic Academy if you are new, then use the Store and Event Locator to find Prereleases, Commander Parties, Standard events, or casual opportunities. Always confirm the store’s current schedule, capacity, fees, and deck rules before you travel.
