Place your PlayStation on a stable, open surface with its vents unobstructed and at least 10 cm (about 4 inches) from nearby walls. Avoid closed cabinets, cramped spaces, long-fibre carpet, cloth coverings and stacked equipment. Choose horizontal or vertical placement based on fit and stability—not an assumed cooling advantage: Sony’s cited guidance does not say that either orientation cools better.
Choose an open, stable location
A PlayStation needs clear space around its ventilation openings so air can move through the console. Sony’s PS5 safety guide specifies at least 10 cm (about 4 inches) between the console and a wall. Sony’s PS5 noise troubleshooting guidance calls for at least 10 cm of free space around each side. Treat these as placement instructions, not as a measured guarantee of a particular temperature, noise level or console lifespan.
Look for a firm, level surface that can support the console without wobbling or tipping. A shelf or media stand can work if the console fits without crowding, its vents remain clear, and the surface is stable. Allow clearance around the console rather than measuring only at the rear: a nearby side panel, wall, cabinet edge or object can obstruct airflow even when the back appears open.

Measure from the console’s outer edges to the nearest wall, panel or equipment. Check the space at the sides as well as behind it, then look from above to make sure nothing overhangs the ventilation openings. Leave enough room to connect and remove cables without shifting the console toward an edge. A shelf that technically holds the console but forces it against a side panel is not an open placement.

Do not cover the console with fabric or place other equipment on top of it. Sony warns against stacking devices, and a covering or stacked item can block ventilation openings or contribute to heat buildup. Keep cables arranged so they do not pull the console out of position or lie across its vents.
Locations to avoid
- Closed cabinets: Sony warns against placing the PS5 in a closed cabinet or another location where heat may build up. An open-front cabinet can still be too cramped if the console is crowded by its sides or back.
- Narrow shelves and enclosed spaces: Avoid a location that leaves less than the recommended clearance or prevents air from circulating around the console.
- Long-fibre carpet: Sony’s PS5 support guidance advises against placing the console on long-fibre carpet. Choose a hard, stable surface instead.
- Cloth or other coverings: Do not drape fabric over the console or use a setup that blocks its vents.
- Under or among other devices: Do not stack equipment on the PlayStation, and avoid a tightly packed arrangement that obstructs its ventilation.
These cautions are about keeping vents clear and avoiding heat-trapping or obstructive surroundings. They do not mean that every cabinet or shelf is automatically unsuitable: the practical test is whether the console has the specified free space, is stable, and can ventilate without an enclosure trapping heat.
For example, an open entertainment unit may be acceptable when the console sits on its own shelf with the required space on every side. Closing a door during play changes that setup by restricting the air around the console, even if the same shelf seemed spacious with the door open. Similarly, placing a router, amplifier or another console directly beside the PlayStation can reduce the available clearance and add another heat source to a cramped arrangement.

Sony’s cited instructions describe both horizontal and vertical setup, but do not claim that one orientation improves airflow or lowers the console’s temperature. There is no supported basis here for ranking the two orientations by cooling, noise, performance or lifespan. Pick the position that fits your entertainment space while keeping the console stable and all ventilation openings clear.

Support accessories are model-specific. Sony’s CFI-21XX PS5 instruction manual says to use the included horizontal feet for horizontal placement and a vertical stand for vertical placement. The Sony setup page covers a model for which a vertical stand is sold separately. Do not assume that a stand made for one PlayStation fits another. Check the model number on your console and consult its manual before buying or using a stand.
When comparing the two positions, consider how much clear floor or shelf area each requires, whether people or pets could knock the console over, and whether cables can reach without tension. A vertical arrangement is not automatically better simply because it exposes a different side of the enclosure. Conversely, a horizontal arrangement is not safer if it is wedged under another device. The correct choice is the supported orientation that leaves the vents and the 10 cm clearances unobstructed.

Set up the console step by step
- Identify your model. Check the model number on the console and find the matching manual in Sony’s PlayStation manuals index. PS5, PS5 Pro, PS4 and PS4 Pro instructions and accessory requirements may differ.
- Choose the orientation and surface. Decide whether horizontal or vertical placement best fits the available space. Use a firm, level surface where the console will not tip or vibrate.
- Fit the correct support. Follow the manual for the model’s horizontal feet or vertical stand. If an accessory is sold separately, verify its compatibility with the exact console model before purchasing it.
- Measure the surrounding clearance. Keep at least 10 cm from a wall and, for PS5 placement, leave at least 10 cm of free space around each side as Sony’s support guidance advises.
- Check every vent and nearby object. Make sure shelves, cabinet panels, walls, cables, coverings and other devices do not block ventilation openings or crowd the console.
- Recheck stability and power connections. Confirm the console rests securely in its supported orientation and that connected cables do not tug it toward an edge or into an obstructed position.
After arranging the setup, walk around it and inspect it at eye level. Look for a wall that is closer than expected, a shelf lip in front of a vent, or a cable bundle pressing against the enclosure. Recheck the position after moving a television or adding a soundbar; a previously open shelf can become crowded when equipment is added.
Keep vents clear and remove dust safely
Dust can collect around vents, so Sony advises preventing buildup. For PS5 vent dust, Sony’s support guidance says to disconnect the AC power cable before cleaning and use a low-powered vacuum around the vents. Follow the instructions for your exact model rather than opening the console or improvising a cleaning method.
- Turn the console off and disconnect its AC power cable before cleaning.
- Check the model’s manual for any additional cleaning instructions.
- Use a low-powered vacuum to remove dust around PS5 vents, as Sony advises. Keep the cleaning focused on the vent area and do not force anything into the openings.
- Before reconnecting power, make sure the console is back in its stable position with the surrounding clearance and vents unobstructed.
Cleaning does not make a cramped or enclosed placement suitable. If dust keeps accumulating quickly, consider whether the console’s location exposes it to a dusty area and whether a cleaner, open surface is available; keep any protective cover off while the console is operating.
Do not treat a decorative dust cover as an airflow solution. A cover that is useful while the console is stored must be removed before operation, and it cannot substitute for the clearance Sony recommends. Disconnecting power before vacuuming also prevents you from cleaning a powered console accidentally.
If the console seems noisy or the space feels too hot
A noise concern does not by itself establish that the console is overheating, and the cited Sony sources provide no comparative temperature or noise measurements for different orientations. Start with the factors the placement guidance addresses rather than assuming a stand, fan or orientation change will improve cooling.

What applies to PS4 and other PlayStation models?
