Put an indoor motion sensor where people are likely to walk across its detection area, such as a frequently used route near a door. Keep windows, direct sunlight, heat sources, moving objects, and obstructions out of the monitored area. Mounting height and pet handling vary by model, so use the instructions for your exact sensor rather than a one-size-fits-all rule.
Choose a route people actually use
A sensor is most useful when someone crosses its detection area during normal movement through the room. Bosch’s quick-start guide advises placing its detector in the part of the room people walk through most often, for example near a door: Bosch Motion Detector II [+M] quick-start guide. Treat that as placement guidance for the identified product, not a guarantee that one position will detect every approach.
Check the sensor’s detection pattern and make sure furniture, shelves, curtains, or other objects do not block the area it needs to monitor. A practical starting point is to map the usual paths into and through the room, then choose a position that covers a likely crossing rather than aiming only at a spot where someone might stand.
How high should you mount it?
There is no universal height established for indoor motion sensors. Follow the manual for your specific model: Bosch’s Motion Detector II [+M] manual specifies 1.8–2.2 m, while Bosch gives 2.20–2.70 m for a different detector. Those ranges apply to their respective products and should not be combined or generalized.

The II [+M] manual, version V004 dated March 2026, states: “The motion detector should be installed at a height between 1.8 and 2.2 m.” See the Motion Detector II [+M] manual for its complete positioning instructions. Bosch’s guidance for the other detector is on its motion detector support page. Confirm the model name before applying a height range.
Keep common false-trigger sources out of view
For the Bosch Motion Detector II [+M], the manufacturer advises against positioning the detector directly opposite a window, in direct sunlight, near a heat source such as a radiator, near a moving object such as a fan, or on an unstable object. It also says to keep the device somewhere pets cannot access it. Bosch’s guidance for its other detector similarly says to keep windows, fans, and radiators out of the monitoring area.

These restrictions are model guidance, but they point to useful checks when choosing a location:

- Keep the monitored area clear of direct sunlight and windows where the manual warns against them.
- Avoid nearby heat sources, including radiators.
- Do not aim the sensor at fans or other objects that move during ordinary use.
- Keep the detection path unobstructed and mount the device securely as directed by its manual.

Where should you put a sensor if you have pets?
Check the exact sensor’s pet settings and limitations before choosing its position. Bosch says the preset pet-detection mode for its supported detector does not detect pets up to 25 kg, and that enabling the mode disables crawl-under protection. That limit and behavior are specific to the product; they do not establish a general pet-weight threshold for other sensors. The II [+M] manual also says to place that detector somewhere pets cannot access it.
Read the manual for both the pet setting and the physical placement rules. A pet feature may change what the sensor detects or how it protects the area, so do not assume that enabling it removes every risk of an alarm.

What to do about recurring false alarms
If an alarm repeatedly triggers without an apparent intrusion, review the system manual and contact the alarm provider rather than moving a sensor at random. A USFA-hosted report reproduces Appleton Police Department advice that pets may not suit some systems and that moving objects—including material moved by ventilation—can cause alarms. It recommends understanding the alarm manual and working with the alarm business: USFA-hosted false-alarm report. The report is approximately from 2009, so treat it as practical historic guidance, not a current national statistic.

Indoor alarm sensors and outdoor motion lights serve different jobs
An indoor alarm detector monitors movement inside the home. An outdoor motion-activated light is a separate option for illuminating an exterior area. The U.S. Fire Administration recommends motion-activated lighting near entrances as an exterior security measure: USFA home-fire prevention guidance. Do not use exterior-light placement advice as a substitute for the alarm sensor’s own manual.
If you are hiring a security provider
For professional installation or monitoring, the Federal Trade Commission advises getting written estimates and examining who installs and monitors the system, installation cost, monitoring fees, contract term, and warranty. Its guidance helps frame the questions to ask; it is not an endorsement of a particular company: FTC guidance on home security systems.
