A PCIe Wi-Fi card plugs into a compatible PCIe slot; a small M.2 Wi-Fi module plugs into a motherboard’s M.2 Key E socket. They are different parts for different connectors. Check your motherboard and adapter manuals before opening the PC—an M.2 socket is not automatically a Wi-Fi socket.

Identify which type of wireless card you have

Look at the part and its packaging before choosing a connector:

  • PCIe add-in card: A larger card with an edge connector and a metal bracket. It fits a compatible PCIe slot and occupies an expansion opening at the back of the case.
  • M.2 Wi-Fi module: A small circuit board without a case bracket. It requires a compatible M.2 Wi-Fi socket, typically Key E.

Do not assume that any M.2 socket will work. Intel’s Wi-Fi 6 desktop kit requirements specify M.2 Socket Key E 2230 and say that Key M and Key B sockets do not work for that kit. Check the requirements for your particular module and the motherboard manual. Intel’s Wi-Fi 6 desktop kit requirements

Where a PCIe wireless card goes

Use an available PCIe slot identified as compatible in both the motherboard and adapter documentation. Some adapters support PCIe x1 only, so do not choose a slot based on appearance alone; check the specific model’s requirements and confirm that the card and its bracket will fit in the case. Where an M.2 Wi-Fi module goes

Install it in the motherboard’s M.2 Key E Wi-Fi socket—not simply any M.2 connector. Follow the board’s manual for access and fastening steps. ASUS’s AX200 quick-start guide, for example, describes inserting the module into an M.2 Key E slot and securing it with the supplied screws; that guide recommends installing the module before mounting the motherboard in the case. These details are specific to the documented setup, not universal instructions. ASUS V-M.2 PCIe Wi-Fi Card / Intel AX200 quick-start guide

Check what the installation requires

  • Available connector and physical clearance: Confirm the PCIe slot or Key E socket, case clearance, and any board-specific access requirements in the manuals.
  • Antenna parts: Kits vary. Check whether yours includes an antenna base, antenna leads, RF cables, bracket, and mounting screws. ASUS’s manual for one motherboard, for example, says the Wi-Fi card, RF cable, and antenna are purchased separately for that model. ASUS PRIME B760M-AJ D4 manual
  • Bluetooth connection: Some PCIe adapters need a bundled USB cable connected to a motherboard F_USB header for Bluetooth. Check the adapter’s instructions; this is not a universal requirement.
  • Drivers: After installation, use the adapter maker’s current instructions to install the correct WLAN drivers and, if applicable, Bluetooth drivers. ASUS directs users to its download center for current downloads in its installation and driver guidance.

Install the card safely

For a PCIe adapter

  1. Shut down the computer, unplug its power cord, and open the case according to the computer and card instructions.
  2. Use the manuals to confirm the correct available PCIe slot, card requirements, and clearance.
  3. Insert and secure the card, then attach its antenna base. If the model includes a Bluetooth USB lead, connect it to the specified motherboard F_USB header.
  4. Close the case, start the computer, and install the appropriate WLAN and, if needed, Bluetooth drivers using the adapter maker’s current instructions.

For an M.2 module

  1. Confirm that the motherboard has a compatible M.2 Key E Wi-Fi socket and that the module supports it.
  2. Follow the board manual’s access instructions; the location and installation sequence can vary by motherboard.
  3. Insert and secure the module as the board and module manuals specify.
  4. Connect the specified antenna leads to the module’s Wi-Fi ports, then install the appropriate drivers.
