If you have a Steam Frame accessory model but no 3D printer, use an on-demand manufacturing service. Form Now accepts an uploaded design, lets you choose material and finish, and ships to addresses in the United States. Forge Labs accepts CAD and mesh files for an online quote and lists locations in the United States and Canada. Neither service page establishes Steam Frame-specific fit testing, so obtain the correct Valve design files, verify their use terms, and request a printability and fit review before ordering.
Which services can print a Steam Frame accessory?
The practical route is to upload your model to a service that prints on demand. You do not need to buy a printer, learn slicing software, or keep material in stock. The service reviews the file, calculates a price, manufactures the part, and ships it within its stated delivery area.

Choose between them on the facts that affect your order: whether the service ships to you, whether it accepts your exact file, which materials and finishes it offers for that file, how much design-for-manufacturing help you want, and whether the quoted lead time works for your project. A successful upload only proves that the file entered the ordering workflow; it does not prove that the accessory will fit, feel comfortable, clear sensors, or withstand repeated use.

Start with Valve’s official Steam Frame information
Before sending a file to a printer, check the official Steam Frame product page. It is Valve’s source for the device and for first-party accessory information. Valve also notes that certain first-party accessory kits are offered only to customers purchasing a Steam Frame during the add-to-cart process. Store stock and purchasing conditions can change, so check the live page rather than relying on an old listing.

A Steam Hardware announcement search result reports that Steam Frame CAD files and electrical-interface information are available for non-commercial use. The announcement page should be read directly before you commission a part: the exact licence language, file repository contents, and any restrictions on modification, redistribution, or commercial use should not be inferred from a search-result summary. If you intend to sell printed parts, obtain explicit permission or other rights instead of assuming that access to a CAD file permits resale.
Do not substitute Valve’s Valve Index extensibility documentation for Steam Frame documentation. That page describes Index resources such as high-resolution STEP files, low-resolution STL files, and dimensioned drawings. It also discusses general maker concerns such as sensor clearance and access to controller inputs, and asks people who want to sell items made from Index resources to contact Valve. Those terms and dimensions apply to Valve Index resources, not automatically to Steam Frame. Use the Index page only as general context for the kinds of clearances a wearable accessory may need.
How to order a custom Steam Frame print
- Define the part and its job. Write down whether you need a cosmetic cover, a mounting bracket, a cable guide, a replacement interface, or another accessory. Record which surface must mate with the headset or controller, which controls must remain reachable, and whether the part will carry a load or be removed frequently. A decorative shell has different requirements from a structural mount.
- Get the correct design file. Use the Steam Frame model or accessory design supplied through Valve’s official channels, or a design whose creator clearly grants you permission to print it. Check the unit system and the model’s intended orientation. Keep the original file unchanged so you can return to it if a service asks for a revision.
- Confirm your rights before manufacturing. The Steam Hardware announcement result describes the CAD and electrical information as available for non-commercial use, but you must verify the complete terms on Valve’s announcement and the files themselves. Personal printing and selling printed accessories are not the same use case.
- Prepare a clean upload. Export one of the formats accepted by the service. Forge Labs specifically lists STEP, STL, IGES, OBJ, and 3MF. Form Now describes support for a broad set of CAD and mesh formats. Remove hidden construction bodies, repair non-manifold surfaces, and make sure the model has a real wall thickness where a physical part is required. If the service reports an error, correct the model in your CAD or mesh editor rather than guessing at a scale change.
- Open the service’s upload and quote workflow. Form Now’s workflow combines file upload with material and finish selection. Forge Labs starts with a CAD-file upload and quote request. Enter the quantity and destination exactly as you plan to order; shipping geography and quantity can change the result shown by the service.
- Ask for a manufacturability review. In the order notes or quote conversation, state the critical dimensions, mating surfaces, screw or clip locations, and the clearances that cannot change. Ask the service to confirm the proposed material, print orientation, expected tolerances, support marks, post-processing, and whether the geometry can be produced as uploaded. A quote should identify what the service will make, not just provide a total price.
- Choose material and finish for the use case. Select from the options the service actually shows for your file. For a part touching skin, prioritize a smooth, deburred surface and rounded edges. For a part that flexes or clips on and off, ask whether the proposed material is suitable for repeated flexing. For a part near electronics, ask about dimensional stability and the effect of post-processing. Do not assume that the most rigid or most polished option is automatically safest or most comfortable.
- Order a prototype before a batch. Fit the first print without forcing it into place. Check every interface, button, strap, cable, sensor opening, and moving joint. Mark the areas that are too tight, too loose, sharp, heavy, or obstructive, then revise the model and order another iteration if needed. Only after the prototype works should you order multiple copies or share the design.
Design checks that matter on a wearable accessory
Protect sensors and optical paths
A cover or mount must not intrude into cameras, tracking sensors, vents, or other openings. Keep the clearances defined by the Steam Frame design rather than borrowing dimensions from Valve Index documentation. If the accessory changes the headset’s view, tracking environment, or airflow, treat that as a functional change and test it carefully.

Keep controls, charging, and adjustments reachable
Check access to every button, controller input, adjustment wheel, charging connector, and cable route that you use while wearing the device. A part can fit its outer contour and still make a control unusable. Test with the cables and straps installed, not only with the bare headset or controller.
Design for comfort and skin contact
Round exposed edges, remove sharp support marks, and avoid pressure points. A finish that looks acceptable on a desk can become uncomfortable after an extended session. If the part touches skin, ask how the surface will be cleaned and whether the selected finish leaves a texture or residue that you do not want.
Account for weight, leverage, and repeated removal
Accessories mounted far from the headset or controller’s center of mass create more leverage than their mass alone suggests. Keep unnecessary material out of cantilevered sections, reinforce screw bosses and clips, and avoid relying on a thin printed tab for a load-bearing connection. If you will remove the part often, design replaceable clips or fasteners rather than a one-time press fit.

Specify the dimensions that cannot drift
Tell the printer which holes, interfaces, and alignment features are critical. A service may be able to compensate for expected process variation, but it cannot know which surfaces matter unless you identify them. Include a drawing or annotated screenshot with the target dimensions and the direction in which a fit can safely be adjusted.
Choosing between Form Now and Forge Labs
For a United States order, either service may be a starting point, but the workflow emphasis differs. Form Now is suited to a user who wants to upload a model, choose a material and finish, and order through a guided interface. Forge Labs is suited to a user who already has a CAD or mesh file in one of its listed formats and wants a quote from a service that lists both United States and Canadian locations.
If you are outside those stated regions, neither cited page establishes worldwide shipping. Ask the service whether it can deliver to your address before spending time repairing a file or selecting a finish. Also ask whether taxes, customs, post-processing, and shipping are included in the quote; no universal price can be stated without the model, material, quantity, and destination.

Questions to include with your quote request
- Does the uploaded file import at the intended scale and unit system?
- Which surfaces and holes will be treated as critical dimensions?
- What material and finish are available for this geometry, and how will support marks or seams be handled?
- What tolerance should I expect on the mating features?
- Can you recommend an orientation that protects the visible and functional surfaces?
- Will the proposed process leave residue, sharp edges, or a texture that needs additional finishing?
- Does the quoted shipping method deliver to my country or province/state?
- Can you produce one prototype before a larger quantity?
- What happens if the part arrives damaged or does not match the approved file?
Common problems and how to fix them
The service rejects the file
Check the extension against the service’s accepted formats, then inspect the model for open surfaces, zero-thickness walls, duplicate bodies, and unsupported construction geometry. Export a fresh copy after repairs. Do not rename an unsupported file extension and expect the geometry to become compatible.
The quote looks wildly too large or too small
Units are a common cause. Compare one known dimension in the uploaded model with the intended Steam Frame dimension. If the scale is wrong, correct it in the source CAD or mesh file and upload again. Ask the service to confirm the interpreted units before ordering.

Inspect the model for mirrored or asymmetric geometry and verify that the accessory is for the correct left or right side. Check whether the print orientation or finishing step changed a mating surface. A photo of the installed prototype, marked with the tight and loose areas, gives the service or designer information that a general complaint does not.

A clip cracks during installation
Stop forcing it. Review wall thickness, the direction of layer lines or other process effects, and whether the selected material is appropriate for repeated flexing. A redesign with a larger radius, a replaceable fastener, or a less aggressive snap fit is safer than repeatedly installing a brittle part on the device.
The accessory blocks a control or sensor
Remove the part and compare the obstruction with the original model. Enlarge the opening or move the mounting feature, then produce another prototype. Do not trim a structural or electrically relevant area by hand unless you understand what clearance you are changing.
The service cannot ship to you
Form Now’s cited information is United States-only, while Forge Labs lists United States and Canadian locations. If your address falls outside those statements, ask for confirmation before ordering or locate another service that legally accepts your file and ships to your region. The geographic limitation is a service issue, not evidence that the Steam Frame design is unavailable.
When an official accessory is the better choice
A first-party kit may be preferable when you need a known interface, a finished surface, or support tied to Valve’s own product ecosystem. Valve’s Steam Frame page lists compatible first-party accessories and explains that some kits are offered only while purchasing a Steam Frame through the add-to-cart flow. That is a different route from commissioning a custom print: it does not give you a customized shape, but it may avoid the uncertainty of fit, material selection, and iterative prototypes. Check current availability and purchasing conditions on the live product page.
Bottom line for a custom-print order
Use Valve’s official Steam Frame resources to obtain the model and understand the permitted use. Then send the file to an on-demand service that serves your location: Form Now for a guided upload, material, and finish workflow in the United States, or Forge Labs for the listed CAD/mesh upload and quote process in the United States and Canada. Treat the first print as a prototype, document the critical clearances, and get the service to confirm manufacturability before you pay for a finished accessory or multiple copies.
