In 2026, cloud security investment should reach beyond perimeter controls: govern human and machine identities, secure AI systems and their access, track third-party software and APIs, control configuration changes, monitor data movement, and protect recovery systems. These are priorities indicated by expert rankings and vendor observations—not a prediction that every business faces the same threats at the same rate.

What cloud-security issues rose to the top in 2026?

The Cloud Security Alliance (CSA) ranked cloud-security concerns in its 2026 expert survey. Its second survey stage asked more than 500 industry experts to assess 23 shortlisted issues. These results show expert priorities, not the share of businesses experiencing each threat.

CSA 2026 rank Concern What the ranking signals
#1 Inadequate identity and access management Excessive permissions, poorly managed credentials, non-human identities, and federated trust relationships are central concerns. The issue rose from #2 in 2024.
#2 AI-enhanced attacks Adversaries can use AI to improve or automate parts of familiar attack workflows.
#3 Insecure third-party resources Supplier and dependency exposure can affect systems a business does not operate directly.
#4 Insecure interfaces and APIs Cloud services and integrations need secure access controls and exposure review.
#5 Misconfiguration and inadequate change control Still a ranked concern, although it fell from #1 in 2024.
#6 AI system compromise Models, data, agents, tools, and their supporting pipelines can be manipulated or abused.
#9 Insecure software development Development practices and software dependencies remain part of the cloud risk picture.
#11 System vulnerabilities Known software weaknesses still matter, particularly when exposed systems are slow to patch.

The ranking is useful for setting a discussion agenda, not for calculating a company’s likelihood of compromise. Its value is that identity, AI, supplier exposure, APIs, and change control appear together: cloud risk spans access, software, and operations rather than residing at a single network boundary.

Which cloud-security trends deserve action?

1. Identity governance must include machines and trust relationships

Identity is a control plane for employees, administrators, workloads, service accounts, and federated access—not just a matter of password quality. A Google Cloud report published in 2026 says identity issues underpinned 83% of compromises in its H2 2025 engagements involving major cloud and SaaS-hosted environments. That figure describes Google’s engagement population, not all cloud breaches.

Review who and what can access critical systems, how permissions are granted, and whether they remain necessary. Include service and machine identities in ownership and access reviews; pay attention to privileged access, credential and token handling, multifactor authentication, and monitoring of federated trust. Google M-Trends 2026 also describes attackers manipulating identity control planes—for example, exploiting misconfigurations to issue certificates and create administrator accounts that bypass MFA and password rotation. No single identity control makes compromise impossible.

Hardware security keys can provide one component of phishing-resistant authentication where services and organizational policy support them. Yubico documents AWS use cases for IAM and root users, but compatibility depends on the identity provider, service configuration, device and browser support, and available ports or connectors. Treat a key as one control to validate, not as a substitute for identity governance.

2. AI expands both the attack surface and the set of assets to protect

CSA’s 2026 list separates AI-enhanced attacks from AI system compromise. The first concerns adversaries using AI to improve or automate activity; the second concerns abuse or manipulation of AI models, data, agents, tools, and pipelines. Microsoft Security’s October 1, 2026 overview describes AI use in reconnaissance, social engineering, malware and exploit development, and post-compromise work, while noting that much of this use still supports portions of existing workflows. AI has not made established attack methods irrelevant.

For business AI agents, assess the entire chain of authority and data access. Microsoft identifies agent identity, permissions, authentication between agents, attribution, revocation, prompt injection, memory, models and data, behavior, and surrounding software and services as security concerns. Before expanding an agent’s use, establish which systems and information it can reach, how its actions are attributed, and how access can be withdrawn.

3. Supplier, API, and software exposure make patch speed important

Third-party resources and APIs occupy high positions in CSA’s survey, while insecure software development and system vulnerabilities also appear in its top 11. The practical challenge is to know which suppliers, components, interfaces, and services are actually present—and who owns the decision to secure or update each one.

Google Cloud’s H1 2026 Threat Horizons report, describing activity observed in H2 2025, says its experts saw a shift from weak credentials and misconfigurations toward exploitation of unpatched third-party software during 2025. It cites React2Shell (CVE-2025-55182) and XWiki CVE-2025-24893 as examples. In multiple observed cases, attackers deployed cryptocurrency miners within approximately 48 hours of the React2Shell disclosure. This is an example from Google’s observations, not a universal exploitation timeline or average.

Maintain an inventory of externally exposed services and dependencies, assign owners to update decisions, and connect vulnerability prioritization to exposure and business impact. Review API access and secure development practices alongside patching; a vulnerability process that cannot identify where a component is deployed cannot reliably prioritize it.

4. Configuration and change control remain material

CSA ranked misconfiguration and inadequate change control #5 in 2026, down from #1 in 2024. In Google Cloud’s observed incidents, initial access involving misconfiguration accounted for 29.4% in H1 2025 and 21% in H2 2025; incidents involving exposed sensitive user interfaces or APIs fell from 11.8% to 4.9% over those periods. Google says these figures come from a subset of observed activity and may not represent all customers. The company interprets the decline as consistent with automated guardrails making some identity and configuration errors harder to exploit, alongside attackers’ increased focus on software vulnerabilities.

Use secure defaults, policy enforcement, controlled changes, and monitoring for unintended exposure. Treat improvement in observed figures as a reason to maintain guardrails, not evidence that configuration risk has been eliminated.

  • Manages 30+ UniFi Network devices and 300+ clients
  • 1 Gbps routing with IDS/IPS
  • Multi-WAN load balancing

5. Data movement and insider risk require visibility

Google Cloud’s H1 2026 report says data was targeted in 73% of cloud-related incidents in its metrics. Its discussion of insider exfiltration draws on a study of 1,002 malicious-insider cases identified through public U.S. legal documents: exfiltration occurred in 909 cases (91%), and 35% of exfiltration cases involved multiple pathways. These study figures describe that case sample, not a representative rate for all companies or insider incidents.

The report notes that email and USB were more common exfiltration routes in that sample, while use of platform-agnostic cloud services was a rapidly growing path. For security owners, the implication is to combine data classification and access logging with monitoring for unusual movement across services. Preserve investigation evidence across relevant cloud platforms so that activity can be reconstructed; insider risk is also a governance and visibility problem, not only an HR matter.

6. Recovery systems need protection from the same attackers as production

Google Cloud and Mandiant’s M-Trends 2026 Executive Edition describes ransomware operators targeting identity services, virtualization management planes, and backup infrastructure to deny recovery. Attackers may map storage locations, retrieve encryption configurations, and delete backup objects. A backup is not a dependable recovery path if a production-tenant compromise also gives an attacker control over its access or catalog.

M-Trends recommends time-bound privileged access, MFA, segmentation of tier-0 control planes, out-of-band management, and an isolated recovery environment with offline or immutable copies of critical identity and backup catalogs. Check whether recovery access, catalogs, and copies remain available after a production identity compromise, and test restoration independently of production administration.

How should a business turn these trends into investment priorities?

  1. Establish what is in scope. Map critical business services to the cloud and SaaS environments, identities, suppliers, APIs, and data they depend on. An incomplete inventory makes risk comparisons unreliable.
  2. Measure control coverage and evidence. For each priority service, identify whether access, changes, vulnerabilities, data movement, and recovery can be governed and audited. Record gaps that affect multiple services before treating isolated fixes as a complete program.
  3. Sequence work by exposure and consequence. Give earlier attention to weaknesses that combine external reachability, high privilege, sensitive data, or a dependency on a single control plane. Use incident and threat information to inform prioritization, not as a substitute for your own environment’s scope.
  4. Test the operating path. Verify that teams can detect and investigate relevant activity, revoke access, apply a safe change, and restore critical services under realistic failure conditions. A control that exists on paper but cannot be operated or evidenced is a weak basis for assurance.

The 2026 evidence supports a shift from perimeter-only investment toward governance of identities, software and service dependencies, data flows, and recovery. CSA’s rankings help identify expert concerns; Google, Mandiant, and Microsoft describe observations within their own reporting scopes. Use those sources to frame questions, then allocate resources according to the systems and consequences that matter to your organization.
