Where you can find a Windows 10 product key depends on how Windows came with your PC or how you bought it. Some PCs use a digital license instead of a separate key, so there may be nothing to retrieve. First check whether Windows is activated and identify how you obtained your copy; then use the matching route below.
Where should you look for a Windows 10 key?
Microsoft describes a Windows product key as a 25-character code. Windows 10 can also activate with a digital license, which does not require you to enter a key. Check the source of your Windows copy rather than assuming every activated PC has a key you can display.

What if Windows is activated but you can’t find a key?
That can be normal. Windows 10 activation may be based on a digital license rather than a product key. A digital license is an activation method that does not require key entry, so searching the PC for a visible code may not turn up anything. If your goal is to reinstall Windows, follow the digital-license process instead of trying to recover a key that may not exist.

How to reinstall Windows 10 with a digital license
- Confirm which Windows 10 edition is licensed. Reinstall the same edition; a digital license for one edition does not automatically license another.
- Start Windows Setup. If Setup asks for a product key, choose the option to skip entering one.
- Finish installation and connect to the internet.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account associated with the license. Windows can then activate using the digital license.
Why might a Windows 10 key fail?
Having a code does not guarantee that it will activate the installed copy. The problem may be the edition, the license, or a change to the device.

- Edition mismatch: The key may not match the Windows edition installed.
- A different edition was installed during repair: A repair or reinstall may have installed another edition or used a different key.
- The key was already used beyond its license terms: This can happen with a pre-owned PC or a key used on too many PCs.
- Hardware changed significantly: A major hardware change can affect activation.
- The software may not be genuine: A key or installation that is not genuine may fail activation.
Use Microsoft’s activation troubleshooting guidance to diagnose an activation error. If the issue began after a significant hardware change, or the key belongs to a pre-owned PC, finding the original code alone may not resolve it.
