Django does not create one universal application log file. In a development session, start with the terminal running python manage.py runserver. In production, inspect the deployed service’s log stream, then open the active Django settings and examine LOGGING handlers. A file exists only when Django, the WSGI server, or the hosting platform has been configured to write or retain one.
The quickest reliable method is to identify the process that emits the message, find its handler destination, and then verify the working directory, permissions, filtering, and retention policy.

Does Django write a log file by default?
No. A new Django project does not automatically create a single file such as django.log. Django’s default logging setup uses console output and email handling rather than a universal on-disk application log. The exact records you see depend on the logger name, severity, DEBUG value, and the handlers active in the settings module that is actually loaded.
Django’s logging system is Python’s standard logging framework configured through a LOGGING dictionary, normally in settings.py. A project can route records to a file, rotating files, an external service, email, or a stream such as standard output and standard error. Your web server and hosting platform may add another layer of access and error logs outside Django.

Development with python manage.py runserver
Watch the same terminal in which runserver is running. The django.server logger emits request messages at INFO and higher to the console independently of DEBUG. This is why request lines can remain visible even after setting DEBUG=False.
Other Django loggers follow the default rules and your project configuration. If an exception or startup warning is not visible, reproduce it while watching the terminal and then inspect the active handlers and levels described below.
A project with a file handler
Search the active settings module and any imported settings files for LOGGING, handlers, filename, FileHandler, and rotating-handler classes. A handler using logging.FileHandler writes to the path specified by filename. Django’s documentation uses general.log as a concrete filename; when that path is relative, it is resolved from the process’s current working directory, not inherently from the directory containing settings.py.
Confirm the working directory of the process before assuming that a relative file is in the project root. A service started by a process manager, container, or WSGI launcher may have a different working directory from your interactive shell. Also verify that the account running Django can create and append to the directory.

WSGI production deployments
A WSGI-compliant application server invokes the project’s application callable. Consequently, production diagnostics require two checks: Django’s own LOGGING handlers and the application server’s access and error logging configuration. A request can be recorded by the server even when no Django file handler exists, while an application exception may be routed through Django, the server, or both.
Gunicorn
Gunicorn separates its own access and error logging from application logging. Inspect the service unit, container command, environment variables, and Gunicorn configuration file for the deployed version’s access-log and error-log destinations. A destination of - commonly means the process stream; a container runtime, service manager, or hosting provider may then collect that stream instead of creating a file on the application host. Check the exact options supported by the Gunicorn version installed in your deployment rather than copying flags from an unrelated release.

When Django uses a StreamHandler, records go to stdout or stderr. In a container, view the runtime’s logs; in a system service, view the service manager’s journal; on a hosted platform, use its log viewer. Typical entry points include the container’s log command, the service journal for the unit, or the platform’s deployment log interface. These systems control storage location and retention, so Django itself cannot promise a particular path or history length.
How to locate the active file handler
- Identify the settings module used by the running process. Check the process environment and startup command for the settings-module selection, then open that file rather than an unused local or test settings file.
- Search for
LOGGINGand list every handler under itshandlerskey. Follow imported dictionaries or environment-based overrides as well as the base settings file. - For each handler, record its
class,level, filters, and destination fields. AFileHandlernormally hasfilename; a rotating handler may create numbered or date-based files instead. - Resolve relative paths against the process working directory. For a production service, inspect its working-directory setting or print the directory from the running process context.
- Check directory ownership and mode bits for the service account. A valid configuration still produces no file if the account cannot create the directory or open the file for append.
- Trigger one known log event and verify the timestamp, logger name, and destination. This distinguishes an incorrect path from a filter or severity problem.

}The example writes to general.log relative to the process’s current directory. In production, use a deliberately chosen writable directory and decide whether a plain file is appropriate. A rotating handler from Python’s logging.handlers package can limit file size or retain a sequence of files, but its naming and retention behavior must be checked separately.

Application code should use Python’s logging API with a meaningful module logger, then connect that logger to the handlers and levels required by the deployment. If you look only for django.request, you can miss messages emitted by your own package or by a third-party component.

These are defaults, not a promise that every project behaves identically. Filters such as require_debug_true and require_debug_false can suppress a record before it reaches a handler. A handler level can also discard messages below its threshold even when the logger itself accepts them.
A practical diagnostic sequence
- Reproduce the event while watching the live stream. Use the
runserverterminal, Gunicorn output, container logs, service journal, or hosted log viewer appropriate to the deployment. - Open the active settings. Search for
LOGGING,handlers,filename,StreamHandler,FileHandler, and rotating-handler classes. - Match the logger name. Decide whether the message belongs to
django,django.request,django.server, or an application module logger. - Check thresholds and filters. Compare the logger level, handler level, and any debug-dependent filters. A record below any applicable threshold will not appear.
- Resolve the destination. For files, resolve relative paths from the process working directory. For streams, identify which layer captures stdout and stderr.
- Verify access. Confirm that the service account can create, open, and append to the target directory and that a security policy is not denying access.
- Check rotation and retention. Look for numbered or date-suffixed files, configured size or time limits, platform expiry, and any redaction rules before treating the absence of an old record as evidence that it was never emitted.
Common reasons a log appears to be missing
The wrong settings file is loaded
Local, staging, test, and production settings often define different handlers. Verify the settings-module value in the running process and inspect the deployed configuration, not only the copy in your editor.

A filter removes the record
require_debug_true and require_debug_false are common causes of environment-specific differences. Remove neither blindly: first decide whether the filter is intentionally protecting production output or email volume.
The level is too high
An INFO message cannot appear in a handler configured for WARNING or ERROR. The logger and handler each participate in filtering, and inherited configuration can make the effective level less obvious than the local logger declaration.
The file is somewhere else
Relative filenames follow the process working directory. A service launched from a different directory can create the same filename outside the project tree. Use an explicit absolute path or inspect the service’s working-directory setting when operational clarity matters.
The process cannot write the directory
Check ownership, permissions, parent-directory traversal, read-only mounts, and the identity under which the WSGI server runs. Fix the directory and file policy rather than granting unnecessarily broad write access.

The platform owns the stream
If the configuration uses StreamHandler or a server destination of -, there may be no application-host file to find. Search the runtime, journal, or hosted dashboard and confirm its retention window.
Choosing a logging destination for production

Evaluate every setup on destination, logger scope, severity threshold, debug-dependent filters, rotation, retention, permissions, and whether the deployment platform captures stdout and stderr. Django supports routing records to files, external services, and email through handler configuration, but the framework does not define your platform’s storage policy.

Logs can contain request data, identifiers, stack traces, and values copied from user input. Define what your application is allowed to record, redact secrets and credentials, restrict file and dashboard access, and include enough context to correlate a failure without exposing private data. Test the policy with representative errors in a non-production environment.
Finally, perform a controlled check after every deployment: emit a known message, confirm its logger name and severity, locate the destination, verify that rotation or platform retention behaves as expected, and ensure operators can retrieve the record without logging into the application host.
The shortest answer
For local development, look at the runserver terminal. For a file, inspect the active LOGGING dictionary and follow each handler’s filename, resolving relative paths from the process working directory. For production, inspect Django plus the WSGI server and the platform that captures stdout and stderr. If no file handler is configured, there may be no Django log file at all—the records are in a stream, journal, hosted viewer, email destination, or nowhere because a level or filter discarded them.
