Start with Google Fonts for open-source families, Font Squirrel for a curated commercial-use directory, and Adobe Fonts if you already subscribe to Creative Cloud. None of these labels replaces reading the license for the exact family you download. Save that license with your project, then install and validate the files in macOS Font Book.
Which free-font source is right for your Mac?
The safest choice depends on how you will use the typeface and whether you already pay for a subscription. “Free download” describes price, not your legal rights. A font can be free for personal work but restricted for client projects, logos, apps, websites or redistribution.

For an independent download, Google Fonts is the strongest first stop when an open-source family meets your design needs. Font Squirrel is useful when you want a directory organized around commercial-use discovery. Adobe Fonts is convenient for subscribers because activation is tied to the service rather than a separate font-file purchase.

- Open the font’s own license. Look inside the download archive and on the family’s official page. Do not rely only on a “free” badge or directory description.
- Confirm commercial permission. Check whether paid client work, advertising, books, merchandise and other revenue-generating uses are allowed.
- Check logo and trademark language. Some licenses permit a font in artwork but impose conditions on using the resulting lettering as a trademark. If the project is a logo, read this clause specifically.
- Check modification rights. You may need permission to alter outlines, rename a font or create a derivative family.
- Check embedding and redistribution. Apps, games, websites, PDFs and design templates can involve different rules from static graphics. Look for wording about embedding, web use and distributing the font files themselves.
- Archive proof. Keep the original archive, the license text, the download date and the source page in the project folder. This gives you evidence of the permission that applied when the work was created.
The SIL Open Font License v1.1, dated 26 February 2007, is a widely used open-font license. Read the complete license conditions for the specific family rather than assuming every SIL-licensed font has identical metadata or companion files.

What “commercial use” does—and does not—mean
Commercial permission generally addresses using the typeface to create an end product, but the details matter. A client logo, a mobile app that embeds a font, a website’s webfont files and a template that customers can edit may each trigger different clauses. “Free for commercial use” is therefore a screening description, not a universal clearance for every delivery method.
Static artwork and logos
Verify commercial-use and logo language before placing the font in branding. Save the exact license with the final artwork so the client can demonstrate the basis for use later.

Apps, games and documents
Look for embedding permissions and whether the font may be redistributed inside an application or document. If the license limits redistribution, convert text to outlines only when that workflow is permitted and appropriate; outlining does not authorize distributing the original font file.
Websites and templates
Check whether web embedding, self-hosting and redistribution are allowed. A license that permits printed graphics may not grant the same rights for downloadable templates or webfont files.

How to install and validate a downloaded font on macOS
- Download from the directory or service. Keep the original archive untouched. Do not separate the font from its license file.
- Extract the archive. Locate the font files, commonly in an OpenType or TrueType format, and retain the accompanying license and read-me files.
- Open the font in Font Book. Double-click a font file, or open Font Book and choose the file from its installation workflow.
- Install it. Review the family name and install location shown by Font Book before confirming.
- Validate the files. In Font Book, run the font-validation command. Apple says Font Book lists problems it finds during validation for review; resolve or remove files that report errors rather than forcing them into production.
- Test in one application. Quit and reopen the design or office app if the family does not appear immediately. Check regular, italic, bold and variable-font instances separately.
Installing a font does not change its license. Keep the archive and permissions record even after Font Book has copied the files into the system or your user library.
Choosing between static and variable font files
When a family offers both, compare the formats against your workflow. Static files provide named weights and styles that many older applications handle predictably. Variable fonts can package a range of weight or width values in one file, but support depends on the application and export pipeline. Confirm that your target apps recognize the axes you need before replacing a proven static setup.

Common problems and practical fixes
The font is missing from an app
Confirm that Font Book completed installation, then restart the app. If only one style is missing, check whether that style was supplied as a separate file and whether Font Book flagged it during validation.
Font Book reports an error
Read the validation report, remove the damaged or duplicate file, and download a fresh copy from the original source. Keep the license associated with the replacement archive.

A client asks for the font files
Read the redistribution clause before sending anything. You may be allowed to deliver outlined artwork or a licensed document without being allowed to hand over the font itself. Ask the client to obtain their own license when the terms require separate users or seats.
A repeatable, low-risk workflow
- Discover the family on Google Fonts or Font Squirrel, or activate it through Adobe Fonts if you already use Creative Cloud.
- Read the exact license and record permissions for the project’s medium.
- Archive the source, license and date with the project.
- Install through Font Book and run validation.
- Test the required styles in the production application before committing to a client deliverable.
This process takes only a few minutes and prevents the most common licensing surprise: discovering after delivery that “free” covered downloading the font but not the way the finished project used or redistributed it.
