For a horror-film tagline, start with the poster, pressbook, press kit, or cover from the release that used it. For spoken dialogue, check the film itself and use a script only as corroboration. Keep the wording tied to its source: a re-release poster, a home-video cover, a database entry, and a line in the finished film are different kinds of evidence.
First, identify what kind of wording you are looking for
“Horror movie quote” can mean several things, and the right source depends on which one you need. A tagline is promotional copy associated with a campaign or release artifact. Dialogue is spoken in the film. Trailer narration, a review excerpt used in an advertisement, and a later marketing slogan may also be mistaken for either. Before searching, decide which category fits your use and label it accurately.
- Tagline: wording printed on a poster, cover, pressbook, or another campaign artifact. It may differ by release, format, or territory.
- Dialogue: words spoken by a character in the finished film. Record the speaker and scene, and confirm the line against the film.
- Trailer or other promotional copy: words heard or displayed in a specific trailer or advertisement. Attribute them to that item rather than calling them dialogue or assuming they appeared on the poster.
- Review quotation: a critic’s words reproduced in an advertisement. Identify the reviewer or publication where possible; it is not the film’s tagline.
This distinction matters because a phrase can be genuinely associated with a film without being spoken in it or appearing on its original theatrical poster. A database transcription may help locate a candidate, but it does not establish where or when the words were used.

1. Find the release artifact itself
The most direct evidence is a scan or physical copy of the poster, pressbook (also called a showman’s manual or exhibitor’s campaign book), studio press kit, or original home-video cover that carries the wording. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ account of 1930s horror marketing describes pressbooks as publicity-department materials made to help theater owners promote films; they could include campaign materials and taglines. This makes them useful evidence of how a film was marketed, not merely a list of phrases later attributed to it.

Whenever possible, record the artifact’s release context alongside the wording: country or territory, year, format, and whether it belongs to the original release or a re-release. A later poster or video cover may use different promotional copy. There may also be more than one legitimate tagline for a film if different campaign materials or markets used different wording. Cite the particular artifact you consulted instead of presenting one phrase as the only tagline for all releases.
2. Search film and library archives
The Library of Congress Motion Picture Copyright Descriptions Collection is a useful route into historical film documentation. Its materials can include registration descriptions, dialogue or continuity scripts, press kits, and publicity. The amount and type of material vary by film: a record may be a short registration form, while another may include a fuller script or other documentation. For some films that are lost, a registration description may be among the most useful surviving records, but it is not automatically a complete substitute for the film or its campaign materials.

Search the collection and its finding aids by the exact title, then inspect the item-level description. Look for whether the record actually identifies a press kit, publicity item, poster, or script, and whether a scan is available. A collection-level description tells you what kinds of material the archive may hold; it does not prove that a particular title has the artifact you need.

Its access notice said film-related archives would be temporarily closed until 1 November 2026. Because access arrangements can change, check the institution’s current visitor information before planning an in-person visit. Its page reports nearly 70,000 title files, more than 20,000 screenplays, dialogue sheets, or scripts, and almost 6,000 censorship documents, but the page does not give an as-of year for those counts; treat them as figures reported on that page, not as dated current inventory totals.

3. Check university archival catalogs
University collections can catalog press kits and marketing files by film title. Search an archive catalog using the exact film title, studio or distributor, and terms such as “press kit,” “pressbook,” “publicity,” and “poster.” Arizona State University’s Movie Press Kit Collection covers kits released from 1962 through 2003, and its horror-related subject results include a file for Alien (1979). That is a useful lead to an archival record, not proof that a particular tagline appears in the file. Inspect a digitized item or ask the archive about the contents before citing the wording.
The collection description reports more than 2,000 press kits, mostly for American films, with about five percent listed as foreign. The page does not date that inventory statement, so it should not be treated as a guaranteed current count. For a specific project, the title-level record and the material it describes matter more than the overall size of the collection.

4. Use film databases to discover candidates
IMDb’s official contributor guidance says taglines should be taken from original movie posters and direct-to-video covers, and says re-release taglines should be identified as such. That guidance is useful for understanding the distinction between a tagline and a general advertising slogan, and database entries can point you toward wording to investigate. However, contributor policy is not the original artifact. If exact wording, punctuation, or release context matters, verify the entry against the poster, cover, pressbook, or archival copy.
How to verify a spoken quote
Check the finished film first
For dialogue, the film is the best source for what viewers actually hear. Confirm the line in the relevant scene, note who says it, and record a timestamp or other locator that lets someone else find it. Preserve the wording as spoken rather than silently correcting grammar or combining separate lines. If the speaker is uncertain, the scene provides context that a quotation list may omit.

Use scripts as corroboration, not as a substitute for the final cut
A dialogue or continuity script can help confirm a line or locate a scene, and the Library of Congress collection includes such scripts among its possible materials. But a script can differ from the completed film. If the script and film do not match, quote the film when your claim concerns the released version, and identify the script separately if its wording is relevant. Do not attribute a script-only line to the final film without checking it.

- Define the claim. Decide whether you need a tagline, spoken line, trailer wording, or review excerpt. This determines what counts as direct evidence.
- Fix the film identity. Record the title and year, and distinguish films with similar titles. For a tagline, also decide which release, territory, and format you mean.
- Search for the primary item. Look for the relevant poster, pressbook, studio press kit, home-video cover, or finished film. Use institutional finding aids and university catalogs to locate archival holdings.
- Inspect the evidence, not just the search result. Read the item description and, when available, view the scan or physical record. A catalog entry may identify a file without reproducing the artifact or proving the phrase appears in it.
- Transcribe faithfully. Preserve spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and line breaks from the artifact. If you normalize or omit anything, make the editorial change clear rather than presenting it as the original.
- Record provenance. Note the holding institution, collection and item title, identifier if available, and a stable item link. For a physical object, record its call number or box and folder, plus the date you consulted it.
- Attribute the version. Describe whether the wording comes from an original theatrical poster, re-release campaign, a particular home-video cover, a script, or the finished film. A broad label such as “the movie’s tagline” can obscure important differences.
What to do when sources disagree
Do not assume that one source must be wrong simply because it gives different wording. Compare each source on four points: how close it is to the original, which release or version it represents, how complete it is, and whether its provenance is clear. An original poster or script is closer to the artifact than an unattributed database transcription, but a poster from a re-release answers a different question from an original-release poster.

If only a catalog record is available, say that the record points to a relevant item rather than claiming you inspected the artifact. If two campaign artifacts use different taglines, identify both by release context instead of collapsing them into a single definitive phrase. For dialogue, prefer the film’s audible wording over an inconsistent script transcription when describing the released version.
Rights and reuse are a separate question
Finding a phrase in a library, archive, catalog, or database does not by itself establish permission to reuse it. Whether a particular quotation or image may be reused depends on the material, jurisdiction, and planned use. The sources described here help establish provenance and wording; they do not resolve permissions for every intended publication. If your use requires clearance, assess rights for the specific text or image and the specific use rather than treating archival availability as authorization.
