For a dependable Ethereum (ETH) open-interest reading, start with the exchange or futures venue that lists the contract, then use a multi-exchange dashboard only after checking its instruments, venues, units, timestamp and counting method. Binance exposes current and historical USDⓈ-M Futures open interest through documented endpoints; CoinGlass provides an aggregated coin-level view with exchange-specific fields; and CME publishes regulated-futures open interest at the end of each trading day. These sources can disagree without any of them being wrong, because they may measure different contracts, denominations, time windows or reporting conventions.
The guide below gives you a repeatable way to locate ETH OI, reconcile apparently conflicting numbers and interpret changes without treating open interest as a standalone price forecast.
What Ethereum open interest measures
Open interest (OI) is the amount of derivatives exposure represented by contracts that remain open at a particular time. Binance Academy describes it as the number of contracts that remain active and unsettled at a specific point in time. CME Group defines it as the total number of futures contracts held by market participants at the end of the trading day.

OI is not the same as volume. Volume counts contracts traded during an interval; OI is a point-in-time measure of contracts that have not been closed, expired or otherwise removed under the venue’s rules. A busy market can have high volume but little net change in OI if traders open and close positions against one another. Conversely, OI can rise while volume is modest if new positions remain open.

Every derivatives position has a counterparty. Therefore, a rising ETH OI figure says that outstanding exposure or contract count has increased under that provider’s convention; it does not say whether the market is net bullish or net bearish. Binance Academy explicitly cautions that OI alone does not predict outcomes. Use price, funding, liquidations and the contract’s specifications as additional evidence, not as a mechanical signal.
Where to find ETH open-interest data
1. The exchange’s own market page or API
A direct venue feed is the best starting point when you need exchange-specific ETH contracts. It tells you which product the venue itself is reporting and avoids an aggregator’s inclusion or transformation rules. Check the exchange’s derivatives market page for the exact symbol, contract type, quote currency and displayed unit before copying a number.
Binance’s official USDⓈ-M Futures documentation lists a current open-interest endpoint, /fapi/v1/openInterest, for a selected symbol. It also documents a separate historical statistics endpoint, /futures/data/openInterestHist. The historical response includes sumOpenInterest, sumOpenInterestValue and a timestamp. Confirm that the symbol is the ETH contract you intend to study and that it belongs to the USDⓈ-M Futures product family; an ETH coin-margined contract or a dated future is a different series.

2. A cross-exchange dashboard or API
For a market-wide snapshot, CoinGlass documents a coin-level exchange-list endpoint that returns an aggregate record labeled “All” and records for individual exchanges. Its schema separates stablecoin-margined USD value from coin-margined quantities and related fields. That makes it possible to see both the total presented by the service and the contribution attributed to each venue.
The CoinGlass documentation states a 10-second cache/update frequency for its API plans. Treat that as the service’s documented cache cadence, not as a guarantee that every underlying exchange feed updates every ten seconds. A dashboard may temporarily show a stale venue, omit an unavailable contract or apply its own normalization before presenting the aggregate.
Use the exchange-level records to audit an “All” total. If you cannot identify the venues included, the contracts covered or the units used, label the value as an unverified dashboard figure rather than as total ETH derivatives OI.

3. Regulated futures reporting
CME educational material explains OI for futures and says CME publishes the data at the end of each day. CME-listed ETH futures therefore provide an important traditional-futures reference, but their cadence is not comparable to a continuously updating crypto-venue chart. A CME number stamped at the end of a trading day should not be compared directly with an intraday perpetual-swap snapshot without making the timing difference explicit.
Compare the numbers before comparing the markets
Two values that both say “ETH open interest” can describe different things. Run the following checks before calculating a spread, ranking venues or drawing a chart.
Instrument coverage
Identify whether the value covers ETH perpetual swaps, dated futures, options or a combined total. Perpetuals do not expire, while dated futures roll or settle; options OI is an options-contract measure and should not be silently added to futures OI. Record the exact contract symbols or the provider’s product labels. If a dashboard combines products, do not compare it with a single-perpetual exchange endpoint.
Venue coverage
Distinguish a direct exchange reading from an aggregator’s total. A direct reading covers one venue and the specified symbols. An “All” value depends on the aggregator’s exchange inventory and on whether unavailable, inactive or newly listed contracts are included. Inspect the per-exchange rows when available and note any missing venue.

Determine whether the value is a contract count, ETH quantity or USD notional. Coin-margined contracts may be reported in ETH or another coin quantity, while stablecoin-margined contracts are commonly expressed as USD value or contracts. CoinGlass documents separate stablecoin-margined USD fields and coin-margined quantity fields; do not add those columns together. A contract multiplier can also make two identical-looking contract counts represent different notionals.
Counting convention
Ask whether the provider reports bilateral contract sides or a single-counted (unilateral) OI value. The answer affects totals even when the underlying positions are unchanged. Check the venue’s definition, contract multiplier and any methodology note. Bybit’s 2026 announcement illustrates why this matters: its OI displays and API fields changed to an updated approach effective June 11, 2026. A series that crosses that date should carry a methodology break instead of being treated as one unchanged measure.
Timestamp and cadence
Save the timestamp, timezone and update interval for every observation. A crypto API snapshot, a dashboard cache and CME’s end-of-day publication are different clocks. Align observations to a common time window, or state clearly that the comparison is approximate. A ten-second cache on an API plan does not turn an end-of-day futures report into an intraday value.

History and revisions
For a time series, use one provider and one contract set whenever possible. If you switch providers, map their symbols and definitions at the switch point. Mark listing changes, expiries, delistings and methodology updates. Do not splice a revised historical series to an older series as though the definitions were identical.
Access and retention
Check whether historical data is available through the same interface as current data, whether an API key or plan is required and how far back records go. Keep raw responses or exports with retrieval time. This protects your analysis if a provider later changes chart labels or recalculates history.
A practical source-comparison table
| Source type | What it is good for | Typical cadence | Questions to answer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct exchange interface or API | One venue’s exact ETH contract or symbol; validation and automated history | Venue-specific and usually intraday, as documented by that venue | Which product family, symbol, unit, multiplier and counting rule? |
| Cross-exchange dashboard or API | Aggregated view plus exchange-level contributions | CoinGlass documents a 10-second cache/update frequency for API plans | Which exchanges and contracts are included, and are values normalized? |
| CME educational and market reporting | Regulated ETH futures context and end-of-day reference | End of each trading day | What trading date and publication time does the value represent? |
How to build a repeatable ETH OI comparison
- Write the question precisely. Decide whether you need one exchange’s ETH perpetual, all crypto venues’ futures, CME futures, options or a combined exposure estimate. “ETH OI” is not specific enough for a reproducible result.
- Choose the primary source. Use the venue API for a venue-level answer. Use an aggregator for breadth, then inspect its exchange rows. Use CME data when the question is specifically about CME-listed futures.
- Freeze the product set. Record symbols, expiries, perpetual-versus-dated status and options inclusion. If a provider’s total is opaque, do not present it as equivalent to a deliberately selected contract basket.
- Normalize units. Keep contract quantity, ETH quantity and USD value in separate columns. Apply a documented contract multiplier only when the venue specifies it. Never infer a multiplier from a chart’s visual scale.
- Align time. Convert timestamps to one timezone, choose a common sampling interval and account for cache lag. For CME, use the stated end-of-day observation rather than an arbitrary intraday timestamp.
- Record methodology. Note bilateral or unilateral counting, margin type, aggregation rules and the provider’s version or announcement date. Put a visible break in the series when a definition changes.
- Reconcile totals. Add exchange-level rows only when they share the same unit and coverage. Compare your sum with the dashboard’s “All” field and investigate differences instead of forcing them to match.
- Preserve evidence. Store the raw response, request parameters, retrieval time and a short definition of the metric. A screenshot without a timestamp or symbol is not an audit trail.
Why ETH OI differs between exchanges
They list different contracts
One venue may show only an ETH perpetual, another may include quarterly futures, and a dashboard may combine both. Options OI can be present in a broad derivatives total even though a futures API excludes it. Different product menus produce legitimate differences.
They use different margin and units
Stablecoin-margined and coin-margined contracts can represent the same economic exposure in different displayed units. A coin quantity changes with the asset’s price when converted to USD, while a contract count depends on the multiplier. Comparing the raw numbers without conversion answers no well-defined question.
They aggregate positions differently
Counting both sides of a contract relationship versus reporting a unilateral figure changes the reported total. Venue-specific rules for contract multipliers, block trades, inactive instruments and expired contracts can also affect the result.
They update on different schedules
An exchange API, a cached aggregator and a daily regulated-futures report can all be accurate for their own timestamps while showing different market states. Fast price moves make even small timing offsets visible.
Methodologies can change
Bybit announced that, effective June 11, 2026, updated OI displays would apply to its Markets page charts for perpetuals, futures and options, the Trading page OI indicator, contract-detail and open-interest pages, and in-app candle lines and data panels. API users also received a unilateral OI value field. Treat observations before and after that date as different methodological regimes unless the venue documents equivalence.

Data quality is not uniform
Feeds can be delayed, temporarily unavailable or revised. A dashboard may omit a venue while still publishing an aggregate. Missing rows and sudden step changes are reasons to inspect status and definitions, not immediate proof of manipulation.
Interpreting an OI change without overcalling it
A rise in OI means more outstanding exposure or contracts under the stated convention; a fall means positions were closed, expired, liquidated or otherwise removed under that convention. Neither direction identifies who is right about price. Long and short positions are paired, so OI does not provide a net-bullish or net-bearish label by itself.
Use a context panel alongside OI:
- Price: compare the OI move with the same-time ETH price move and state the interval used.
- Funding: persistent positive or negative funding can describe the imbalance in perpetual-swap financing, but it does not convert OI into a forecast.
- Liquidations: a sudden OI decline during a liquidation wave may reflect forced closures rather than voluntary sentiment.
- Contract context: separate perpetuals, dated futures, options and margin types so a product shift is not mistaken for new market-wide exposure.
Describe these as corroborating evidence. A rising OI and rising price can occur alongside new short exposure, and falling OI can occur during either a bullish or bearish unwind.
What precision can—and cannot—be claimed
A 2023 academic preprint titled “Reconciling Open Interest with Traded Volume in Perpetual Swaps” examined direct tick-level data from seven exchanges and reported systematic discrepancies in some venues’ Bitcoin perpetual-swap OI during two sampled periods. The finding is useful as a quality-control warning: inspect definitions, timestamps and raw feeds. It does not establish that every exchange is inaccurate, that current Ethereum OI is wrong or that a present-day dashboard has the same issue.
When a value looks implausibly precise, report the provider, timestamp, unit and methodology rather than adding decimal places that the source did not establish. A rounded USD figure and an exact contract count should not be presented as equally precise measurements.
Common mistakes and fixes
- Mistake: treating volume as OI. Fix: verify that the field describes outstanding contracts at a point in time, not contracts traded during a period.
- Mistake: adding coin quantity to USD notional. Fix: convert with a documented price and multiplier, or keep the series separate.
- Mistake: comparing an “All” dashboard total with one perpetual. Fix: match product and venue coverage first.
- Mistake: ignoring timestamps. Fix: align snapshots and label CME end-of-day data separately from intraday crypto data.
- Mistake: joining a series across a methodology change. Fix: mark the break and analyze each regime separately unless the provider supplies a back-adjustment.
- Mistake: treating OI as a directional signal. Fix: pair it with price, funding, liquidations and contract details.
- Mistake: assuming a cache interval describes every source feed. Fix: call it the aggregator’s documented cache/update cadence and check venue freshness separately.
A concise decision rule
For an exchange-specific answer, cite the venue’s own symbol and endpoint. For a market-wide answer, use an aggregator’s exchange-level records and disclose its coverage, units and cache behavior. For CME futures, use the end-of-day figure with its trading date. In every case, preserve the definition and timestamp next to the number. If two readings still differ after those controls, they are measurements of different scopes or methodologies until proven otherwise—not automatically a data error.
