For a U.S. public company, start with the SEC’s EDGAR database to locate the filed record, then use the company’s investor-relations site for earnings releases and supplemental files. Match the document to your question: 10-K for annual reporting, 10-Q for quarterly reporting, and 8-K for material current events. Check the filing date, reporting period, form type and any amendment before relying on a number.
Why EDGAR is the starting point
EDGAR is the central free source for U.S. public-company filings. It contains the documents submitted to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), arranged chronologically and labeled by form type. Searching by a company’s legal name or stock ticker takes you to its filing history, where you can open the HTML filing, downloadable documents and, when available, structured data.
A filed document is a primary disclosure, not an SEC certification. The SEC sets reporting requirements and may review filings for apparent deficiencies or inconsistencies, but the company prepares the filing. The SEC’s investor guidance states plainly: “The SEC neither writes the 10-K nor vouches for its accuracy.” Treat a filing as the issuer’s regulated disclosure that can be checked in its original context, not as a government endorsement of every statement.
Choose the filing that answers your question
| Form | Best use | What it normally contains | Reporting cadence or trigger |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10-K | Full annual picture | Audited annual financial statements, business description, material risk factors, annual MD&A, liquidity and capital-resources discussion, and notes to the accounts | Annual report |
| 10-Q | Quarterly results and updates | Unaudited quarterly financial statements, updated risk information, quarterly MD&A, and related notes | Quarterly report |
| 8-K | Material events between periodic reports | Current-event disclosures and exhibits, which may include an earnings press release | Filed when a reportable event occurs |
Use the 10-K when you need a complete year, the 10-Q when you need the latest quarter in the periodic-report record, and the 8-K when you are looking for a significant development before the next 10-K or 10-Q. An 8-K is not a substitute for the periodic statements: it often announces the event while the later quarterly or annual filing supplies fuller financial statements and footnotes.

How to find a company’s latest 10-K, 10-Q or 8-K
- Open the company’s EDGAR filing page. Search the SEC site by the issuer’s name or ticker. Confirm that the legal entity and ticker match the company you intend to analyze; similarly named subsidiaries can have separate records.
- Scan the chronological list. Each entry identifies the form, filing date and reporting period. Sort your attention by the newest filing, but do not assume the newest document answers every question.
- Select the form. Open a 10-K for annual results, a 10-Q for quarterly results or an 8-K for a current event. Read the filing’s cover page first to verify the period and registrant.
- Check for amendments. A suffix such as
/Amarks an amended filing. Compare the amended document with the original when a number, exhibit or disclosure appears to have changed. Use the latest applicable version for your analysis and record that it is amended. - Read the statements and notes together. A headline income figure can be affected by accounting policies, discontinued operations, segment definitions or one-time items explained only in the notes.
Where to find the latest earnings announcement
For a fresh earnings announcement, check two places: the issuer’s investor-relations results page and EDGAR. Investor-relations pages are often easier to navigate and may group a press release with a webcast, fact sheet, presentation, spreadsheet, PDF annual report and XBRL download. The layout and available files differ by issuer, so use that page as a convenient index rather than assuming it is the complete legal record.
Many companies announce quarterly or annual results in a press release filed as an exhibit to an 8-K under Item 2.02, Results of Operations and Financial Condition. The release usually provides headline revenue, earnings, cash-flow or guidance figures and management commentary. The subsequent 10-Q or 10-K normally provides the complete financial statements, accounting notes and broader discussion. Use the release to identify what was announced and the periodic filing to verify the fuller record.
When comparing the two, record the release date, 8-K filing date and the period covered. A release can be posted on an investor-relations page before the related filing appears, or it can be attached to the 8-K itself. Most 8-K disclosures are generally due within four business days of the triggering event, although some items have different deadlines; confirm the current rule when timing is critical.

Risk Factors
Risk Factors lists significant risks the issuer identifies, such as competitive, regulatory, operational, financing or concentration risks. Treat it as the company’s disclosure of material exposures, not as an independent probability assessment.
Management’s Discussion and Analysis
MD&A gives management’s explanation of results, liquidity, capital resources and known trends. Look for year-over-year and period-over-period drivers, cash needs, debt maturities, acquisitions, restructuring and commitments. Compare management’s explanation with the statement lines and notes.

The statements provide the reported income, balance-sheet and cash-flow figures. Notes define accounting policies, segment information, debt, leases, stock compensation, contingencies and other details that can materially change how a headline metric should be interpreted.
How to use a 10-Q without treating it like a mini 10-K
A 10-Q is the quarterly update. Its financial statements are unaudited, and its risk and MD&A sections generally focus on what changed since the latest annual report. Start by comparing the quarter and year-to-date columns with the same periods in the prior year. Then check the updated risk disclosures and notes for new debt, legal matters, acquisitions, impairments or accounting changes.
Because a 10-Q is not the annual filing, some background disclosures may be incorporated by reference to the latest 10-K or presented in abbreviated form. For a complete annual history, return to the 10-K; for the newest quarter, use the 10-Q together with that 10-K’s continuing disclosures.

How to interpret an 8-K and Item 2.02
An 8-K reports material current information between periodic reports. Its item number tells you the subject. Item 2.02 is commonly used when an issuer releases quarterly or annual results. Open the exhibit attached to the 8-K to see the exact release filed with the SEC, then check whether a later 10-Q or 10-K expands, updates or corrects the information.

Other 8-K items can cover events such as agreements, changes in control, departures of directors or officers, or other matters the issuer must disclose. Do not infer that every 8-K contains financial statements; many contain only the event disclosure and supporting exhibit relevant to that event.
Investor-relations pages: useful, but verify the record
An issuer’s investor-relations page can be the fastest way to find a readable earnings release, webcast replay, fact sheet or spreadsheet. Supplemental formats are helpful for locating a metric or building a comparison, especially when a spreadsheet provides consistent periods. They may, however, omit definitions, footnotes or later amendments. Confirm material values in the filed 10-K, 10-Q or 8-K and note whether the investor-relations document is dated before or after that filing.
Keep the company’s presentation separate from the filing’s accounting record. A fact sheet may emphasize adjusted or non-GAAP measures, while the filing presents the required financial statements and reconciliations. Use the definition supplied with each measure and avoid treating similarly named metrics as interchangeable.
Using Inline XBRL and SEC data tools
Some filings include Inline XBRL, a structured format that software can parse. It can speed up extraction and comparisons across periods or issuers. The tag alone does not supply the full meaning of a number: units, signs, dates, dimensions, restatements and footnotes matter. Check every extracted value against the statement and notes in the filed document.

SEC financial-statement datasets are built from EDGAR submissions and XBRL attachments. They can include multiple periods and amendments and represent as-filed submissions. Use them as a research aid for sorting or downloading data, then return to the specific filing and its amendment history before publishing an analysis or making an investment decision.
A verification checklist before you quote a number
- Identity: Confirm the registrant’s legal name, ticker and reporting entity.
- Form: Record whether the figure came from a 10-K, 10-Q, 8-K exhibit or an issuer supplement.
- Period: Write down the exact quarter, year-to-date interval or fiscal year, including the fiscal year-end date.
- Filing date: Distinguish when the document was filed from when the results were announced.
- Amendment status: Check for an
/Afiling and use the applicable amended information. - Measure definition: Determine whether the number is reported under the financial statements, a non-GAAP measure, a segment measure or management guidance.
- Context: Read the related note and MD&A explanation, not just the table cell.
- Cross-check: Compare an investor-relations release with the filed record and investigate differences rather than averaging them.
What if the company is outside the United States?
This workflow is designed for U.S. public companies. Foreign private issuers and companies listed in other jurisdictions generally use different forms and national filing systems; a 10-K or 10-Q may not exist for them. Identify the company’s primary listing market, find that market regulator’s filing database and use the issuer’s investor-relations or financial-results page to locate the corresponding annual, interim and current-event reports.
Private companies may not publish the same public filings at all. Their available information can be limited to company-provided statements, lender or regulatory disclosures, or filings required in a particular jurisdiction. Do not assume that the absence of an EDGAR record means the business has no financial information; it may simply not be an SEC reporting issuer.

Ignoring an amendment
An amended filing can change an exhibit or correct a disclosure. Check the chronological list for the /A suffix whenever a later document appears.
Mixing fiscal periods
Companies can use fiscal years that do not match the calendar year. Read the stated beginning and ending dates and compare like-for-like periods.
Assuming filing equals endorsement
EDGAR establishes where the issuer’s disclosure was filed; it does not turn management’s claims into independently verified facts. Evaluate the supporting statements, notes and risk language.
The practical source hierarchy
- EDGAR filing: Use it for the authoritative filed version, form, date, period, statements, notes and amendment status.
- Issuer investor-relations page: Use it for readable releases, webcasts, fact sheets, spreadsheets and other supplements.
- Structured data: Use Inline XBRL and SEC datasets to extract or compare values, then validate them in the filing.
- Other summaries: Treat third-party summaries as navigation aids only and trace important claims back to the issuer’s filing.
This order keeps convenience from replacing verification: find the announcement quickly, but anchor conclusions in the original filing and its context.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where can I find a company’s latest earnings report?
Check the company’s investor-relations results page for the newest press release and EDGAR for the related 8-K exhibit and subsequent 10-Q or 10-K. The release is usually the announcement; the periodic filing is the fuller financial record.
How do I find a company’s 10-K or 10-Q?
Search EDGAR by the company’s legal name or ticker, open its chronological filing page and select the latest 10-K or 10-Q. Verify the reporting period, filing date and whether an amended filing marked /A follows it.
Is an earnings release the same as an SEC filing?
No. An earnings release is an issuer summary. It may be attached as an exhibit to an 8-K under Item 2.02, while the 10-Q or 10-K later provides fuller statements, notes and disclosures.
Does the SEC verify everything in a 10-K?
No. The company prepares the 10-K. SEC requirements and review can identify apparent issues, but the SEC says it does not write the 10-K or vouch for its accuracy.
