If you saved a file to OneDrive, the quickest place to find it is OneDrive.com. Sign in with the same Microsoft account you used when saving the file, then use Search everything at the top of the page.
The file may also be in the OneDrive folder on Windows, under Locations in Finder on a Mac, or in the Files section of the OneDrive mobile app. If it is missing from all three, check the Recycle bin, Personal Vault, other Microsoft accounts, and folders that were never synchronized to your device.
Find OneDrive files online
OneDrive.com is the most reliable place to check because it shows files stored in the cloud even when they are not downloaded to your computer.
- Go to OneDrive.com.
- Sign in with your personal Microsoft account or your work or school account.
- Select Search everything at the top of the page.
- Search by the file name, part of the name, description, tag, date, or place.
- Open the result or right-click it to see its location and available actions.
Do not search only for the exact filename. For example, searching for budget may find a file named 2024-Marketing-Budget.xlsx when you no longer remember the full name.

Check that you are using the right account
A computer can have both a personal OneDrive account and one or more work or school accounts. A file saved in a company account will not appear when you search your personal OneDrive.
On OneDrive.com, select your account picture and confirm the signed-in account. If necessary, sign out and sign in with the address used when the file was created or saved.
Important: Personal Vault files are not searchable
Files in Personal Vault do not appear in OneDrive search results. Open Personal Vault directly, unlock it, and browse its contents there.
Recommended Free Tools
To recover a deleted Personal Vault file, unlock Personal Vault first. Then open Recycle bin and select Show Personal Vault items.
Find OneDrive files on Windows
Files that are synchronized to Windows appear in File Explorer inside a OneDrive folder. Open File Explorer and look in the left navigation pane for one of these names:
| Account type | Typical folder name |
|---|---|
| Personal Microsoft account | OneDrive – Personal |
| Work or school account | OneDrive – CompanyName |
Open the relevant folder and browse to the folder where you saved the file. You can also search from the OneDrive folder using the File Explorer search box.
The OneDrive folder is not always in the same path
There is no single hard-coded Windows path that applies to every installation. The folder location was selected during OneDrive setup. To check or change it:

- Select Choose folders to see which folders are synchronized to this computer.
During setup, the This is your OneDrive folder screen shows the configured location. Selecting Change location lets you choose a different folder.
A folder can be in OneDrive but hidden from File Explorer
If a folder was cleared in Choose folders, it is removed from the computer’s OneDrive folder but not deleted from OneDrive. The folder remains available on OneDrive.com and in the mobile app.
To make it appear locally again, open the OneDrive cloud menu, go to Settings > Account > Choose folders, select the missing folder, and choose OK.
Online-only files still count as OneDrive files
Files On-Demand can display a file in File Explorer without downloading its contents to the computer. An online-only file usually has a cloud status icon. Double-click it to download and open it, or right-click it and choose an option such as Always keep on this device.
Choosing to make a file online-only does not delete it. However, selecting Delete does delete the OneDrive item across devices and online. If that happens, recover it from the OneDrive Recycle bin.
Find OneDrive files on a Mac
On macOS 12.1 and later, the current OneDrive location is:
Finder > Library > Cloud Storage > OneDrive
Microsoft normally places an alias or shortcut in the older location, so you may still see OneDrive under your user folder. You can also open Finder and look in the sidebar under Locations.

If the OneDrive item is missing from the sidebar:
- Open Finder.
- Select Go > Library. If Library is not shown, hold the Option key while opening the Go menu.
- Open Cloud Storage, then OneDrive.
To check which folders are synchronized on the Mac, select the OneDrive cloud icon in the menu bar, then select Settings > Preferences > Account > Choose Folders. A folder cleared there will remain online but will not appear in the local OneDrive folder.
Mac files that will not open after an update
After the macOS 12.1 path migration, older pinned files or entries in Recent may point to the previous OneDrive location. Open the file from the new OneDrive folder instead. If Finder keeps opening an invalid old path, clear the affected items from Recent.
Office AutoSave can also retain the old path. In Word, Excel, or another Office app, select File > Save As and choose the new OneDrive folder.
Find OneDrive files on an iPhone or Android phone
- Open the OneDrive app.
- Tap Files near the top of the screen, next to your account picture.
- Browse folders or use the search control.
- Check the account shown by tapping your profile picture if the file is not listed.
If OneDrive.com keeps opening the app instead of the website, open the site in a private or incognito browser window. This can be useful when you need to check a different account.
On iPhone or iPad, Microsoft recommends resetting the OneDrive app when it cannot find files: select Profile > Settings > Account > Reset.

Check where the file was actually saved
Not every file created on a computer is automatically stored in OneDrive. Windows folders such as Desktop, Documents, Pictures, Music, and Videos are only synchronized when OneDrive folder backup has been enabled.
When saving a file, the Save dialog lets you choose OneDrive or This PC. A default save location does not force every file into OneDrive; an individual file can still be saved elsewhere.

If you cannot find the file online or in the OneDrive folder:
- Search the entire computer with File Explorer or Finder.
- Check the computer’s Recycle bin or the Mac Trash.
- Look in the folder shown in the application’s Save As dialog.
- Check whether the file was created on another computer or phone before synchronization completed.
On iOS, an iCloud photo optimized to save space may not be stored on the device and cannot be uploaded to OneDrive until the original is downloaded. To disable optimization, open Settings > iCloud > Photos and clear Optimize Storage.
Recover a deleted OneDrive file
Use the OneDrive website’s Recycle bin if the file was deleted from OneDrive or from a synchronized folder.
- Sign in to OneDrive.com.
- Select Recycle bin on the left.
- Select the file or folder.
- Select Restore at the top of the page.
Personal OneDrive items are generally retained in the web Recycle bin for up to 30 days. Work or school OneDrive and SharePoint items are generally retained for up to 93 days, subject to the organization’s policies.
If you delete a file from the Recycle bin, recovery may still be possible for a work or school account through a Microsoft 365 or SharePoint administrator. Contact the organization’s administrator promptly.
Restore an entire OneDrive
Microsoft 365 subscribers can sometimes undo a larger accidental deletion or a ransomware-related change. On OneDrive.com, select Settings > Options > Restore your OneDrive. Choose a point within the previous 30 days and follow the prompts.

FAQ
Where is the OneDrive folder on my Windows PC?
Open File Explorer and select OneDrive – Personal or OneDrive – [CompanyName]. The exact disk path depends on what was selected during setup. You can inspect the configuration through the OneDrive cloud icon: Help and Settings > Settings > Account.
Why can I see a file on OneDrive.com but not on my computer?
The folder may have been excluded through Choose folders, or the file may be online-only. Check OneDrive cloud icon > Settings > Account > Choose folders. Online-only files can still appear locally as placeholders and download when opened.
Why does OneDrive search not find my file?
Check that you are signed in to the correct personal or work/school account. Also check Personal Vault directly because Personal Vault files do not appear in OneDrive search results. If the file was deleted, open the OneDrive Recycle bin.

On macOS 12.1 and later, open Finder and go to Library > Cloud Storage > OneDrive. OneDrive may also appear under Finder’s Locations section or as an alias in the older location.
Does making a OneDrive file online-only delete it?
No. It removes the local copy to save disk space while retaining the file in OneDrive. Deleting the file with Delete is different: that removes the OneDrive item and sends it to the OneDrive Recycle bin.
How do I restore a deleted OneDrive file?
On OneDrive.com, select Recycle bin, select the file, and choose Restore. Personal items are generally retained for up to 30 days; work and school items are generally retained for up to 93 days.
The Bottom Line
Start at OneDrive.com, search while signed in to the correct account, and check Personal Vault separately. Then inspect the local OneDrive folder: OneDrive – Personal or OneDrive – CompanyName on Windows, and Library > Cloud Storage > OneDrive on newer macOS versions. If the file is still missing, check Choose folders, the Recycle bin, other accounts, and the location selected in the original Save dialog.
