For free games you can play without installing a desktop game, start with the official CrazyGames or Poki websites. For indie, experimental, and game-jam titles, browse itch.io’s HTML5 games catalogue and look for “Play in browser.” Check each game’s listing before starting: browser-playable does not always mean free, suitable for children, or free of ads and optional purchases.
Which sites are good places to start?
These three services offer different ways to find games that run in a web browser. Their catalogue sizes and service descriptions below are statements published by the platforms, not independent counts or safety certifications. Figures are current as reported on October 13, 2026, and can change.

Choose a large, browsable catalogue
CrazyGames and Poki are convenient starting points if you want to scan a broad selection rather than search for a particular independent creator. Both present browser games across multiple genres. The size figures are useful as a rough indication of catalogue scale, but they are not a promise that every listed title will suit your interests, device, or age group.
CrazyGames reports more than 4,500 games and over 60 million monthly users, while Poki reports around 1,700 games and more than 100 million monthly players. These numbers describe different measures, and both come from the platforms themselves. They do not establish which catalogue is better, how many games are free, or how active a particular game is. Choose by browsing the genres and individual games you are interested in rather than treating the totals as a quality ranking.

Look for independent and experimental games
itch.io’s HTML5 catalogue is a better fit when you want to discover work from individual developers, game jams, or smaller studios. Its browser-play label helps identify listings with an in-browser option, but it does not settle whether a title costs money or is appropriate for a particular player. Read the page for the specific game before launching it.
The catalogue showed 744,640 results when checked on October 13, 2026. That is a live, changing result count, not a tally of titles that are all free or suitable for every audience. Some entries are paid, and a listing’s browser option, price, and age or content information are separate details. Verify each one on the game’s own page.
How to find and launch a game without downloading it
- Open the official site. Type the platform’s domain yourself or use a bookmark you trust. The official addresses are crazygames.com, poki.com, and itch.io/games/html5. Avoid lookalike addresses and pages reached through suspicious download advertisements.
- Browse or search for a title. On a broad catalogue, use the available genre or game listings to narrow the choices. On itch.io, start from the HTML5 catalogue and select a particular listing; verify that the listing actually provides “Play in browser.”
- Read the game’s own details. Confirm the price, any age or content guidance, and whether the game can be played in the browser. Do not assume that a free-to-open platform makes every title free or appropriate for every player.
- Start the game in the browser. A game advertised as browser-playable should normally launch there. If a page unexpectedly asks you to install an executable just to play, stop rather than treating the download as a required step.
- Decide whether to sign in. You can use Poki as a guest; its FAQ says guest progress is kept in browser storage or cookies. An optional account can keep progress online across devices. Decide based on whether you want that continuity and are comfortable with the account option.
Web games generally require an internet connection. A browser-playable title is not the same thing as an offline game: do not assume you can keep playing after disconnecting unless the game itself says so.

A quick pre-play check
Before you press Play, confirm that the page is the real platform, the selected listing says it runs in a browser, and the price is acceptable. Then scan for age or content guidance, ads, and optional purchases. If you are choosing a game for someone else, especially a child, review the title rather than relying only on the site’s general description. These small checks help distinguish a no-install browser session from a listing that is paid, unsuitable, or asking for an unexpected download.

There is no single browser-game experience shared by every title. A platform can host a wide range of games, but the individual listing determines whether it offers browser play and what its terms are. If one game requests a download, account, or payment you did not expect, pause and check the page details instead of assuming that the request is necessary.
What “free” means on a browser-game site
Free access can be funded in different ways, and the word does not tell you whether a particular game has advertisements or purchases. Poki says, “Ads are what allows Poki to offer a free gaming experience,” so expect advertising to support its catalogue. Its FAQ also says it works directly with studios and developers and that games are licensed and published with permission. That is Poki’s description of its own publishing model, not an independent verification of every title.
CrazyGames’ parent page says some games may include in-game purchases. That means a game can be available to launch without an upfront charge while still offering optional spending inside it. Check the game page and any purchase prompts rather than assuming “free” means there are no commercial elements. If a child is playing, consider whether you are comfortable with ads or purchase prompts appearing in the experience.
itch.io’s HTML5 catalogue includes paid listings as well as games with browser-play options. Treat price and play method as separate details: a browser game may be paid, while a free listing may have conditions described on its own page. A catalogue filter or category alone is not enough to establish the terms for an individual title. Confirm the displayed price before starting, particularly when navigating from a catalogue of mixed listings.

How to judge legitimacy and safety
No platform’s own description is an independent security audit or a guarantee that every game is appropriate for every person. Use a few practical checks before playing, especially if the device is shared with a child.
- Check the address. Use the official domain, not a lookalike or a third-party page that imitates a game portal. Be cautious around deceptive download buttons.
- Do not install an unexpected file. If the game is described as playable in a browser, an unexpected executable is a reason to stop and recheck the page rather than proceed.
- Review the individual title. Look at age guidance and content information for the game itself. A platform-wide label cannot tell you everything about a specific title.
- Understand what the platform says about publishing. Poki says its games are licensed and published with permission from studios or developers. This is a useful disclosure about its stated process, but it is still the platform’s own claim.
- Look for ads and purchase options. A free game can be ad-supported or include optional in-game purchases. Check the platform and game details before handing over payment information or approving a purchase.
- Consider progress and browser data. Poki says guest progress relies on browser storage or cookies and can be lost if those are cleared or blocked. Its optional account can store progress online across devices.
Choosing games for children
CrazyGames says its main site is for ages 13+ and recommends CrazyGames Kids for younger children. Poki describes Poki Kids as an ad-free, child-friendly option. These are the platforms’ own descriptions, not independent safety certifications. For a child, check the applicable age guidance, review the specific game, and decide whether its content and advertising environment are acceptable. A child-focused site description does not remove the need to consider the particular game.
If you are choosing between the two platforms for a younger player, the age guidance is a relevant first filter, not a final verdict. The available information does not establish that every title on either service has been independently reviewed against one universal standard, so an adult should still assess the game itself. Poki’s description of Poki Kids as ad-free is a statement from the platform; it should not be treated as an outside certification of every title or of every aspect of a child’s online experience.
What to expect from accounts and saved progress
An account is not always required to try a browser game. Poki says guest progress is saved in browser storage or cookies; clearing that data or blocking it can remove or prevent that progress. If you want to continue on another device, Poki says an optional account can store progress online. The trade-off is simple: guest play avoids signing in, while an account is the option Poki identifies for cross-device progress.

Browser storage also means guest saves are tied to the browser data on the device where you played. They are not the same as an online account save, so do not rely on guest progress surviving if you clear cookies or use browser settings that block that storage. If continuing on another device matters, check whether the particular platform or game offers an account-based save option.
For other platforms or individual games, do not assume the same save behavior. The cited catalogue descriptions do not establish a universal account requirement or save policy across every game. Check the specific listing or in-game instructions if keeping progress matters to you.

There is no need to buy a special gaming computer, controller, headset, or other peripheral just to find a free browser game. The central requirement is access to the browser-playable listing itself; a peripheral may be a personal comfort choice, not a prerequisite established by these platforms’ descriptions. Likewise, the fact that a game is browser-based does not prove that every title works identically on every device, so check its own page if a particular device matters to you.
