For a retired LEGO Lord of the Rings set, start with LEGO’s official Building Instructions search. Search by the set name or, preferably, its set number, confirm the matching product page, and download the free PDF manual. For missing elements, check LEGO’s replacement-pieces service and Pick a Brick before looking at specialist marketplaces. LEGO may no longer stock an exact older element, while third-party listings can differ in color, condition, quantity, location and shipping cost.
The reliable sequence is: identify the exact set, identify the exact element from the manual and inventory, try LEGO’s own stock, then compare carefully screened third-party listings. This avoids buying a visually similar but incorrect part or paying for a paper booklet when a complete PDF is available.
Use the set number as your starting point
Lord of the Rings set names can be similar, and several releases are now retired. A set number is the safest way to separate them. LEGO’s Building Instructions search includes thousands of complete guides and returns both current and retired models.
- Open LEGO’s Building Instructions search.
- Enter the model name, such as “The Tower of Orthanc,” or enter the number directly.
- Review the result title, set number, theme and product image.
- Open the result only after the number matches the box, inventory record or other documentation you have.
Do not rely on a name alone. “The Tower of Orthanc” is set 10237, while “The Battle of Helm’s Deep” is set 9474. Confirming the number prevents you from downloading a correct-looking manual for the wrong release.

Download the official free manual
On the matching LEGO product page, look for the Building Instructions section and download each PDF offered. LEGO’s missing-instructions help guidance states that instructions can be downloaded free in PDF format. The files are useful even if you own the original booklet: they let you zoom into tiny part images, search pages quickly and print selected steps.
Example: The Tower of Orthanc (10237)
The official page identifies set 10237 as a 2013 release with 2,359 pieces and provides three PDF instruction sections. Download all three sections if you are rebuilding the complete model; stopping after the first file can leave later towers, mechanisms or minifigure steps undocumented.
Save the files with the set number in the filename, for example LEGO-10237-instructions-1.pdf. If you are working from a tablet or phone, keep the files available offline because large manuals can be inconvenient to reopen while sorting parts.
Identify a missing element precisely
A missing “black curved piece” is not enough information for a reliable order. LEGO models often use several elements with similar silhouettes but different lengths, connection points or shades. Use the instruction image together with a catalog inventory.

Read the manual’s parts callouts
At the beginning or end of many instruction sections, LEGO shows the elements needed for a stage. Compare the shape, size, connection type and color shown there with the gap in your model. Check neighboring steps as well: an element may appear in an earlier bag or be installed in a later subassembly rather than being absent from the set.
Cross-check a catalog record
BrickLink’s reference catalog lists Lord of the Rings sets and their inventories. Use the set record to narrow the candidate element, then verify the element’s color and quantity. Catalog naming is more reliable than a visual description alone, especially for small clips, modified bricks, weapons and minifigure accessories.
Record the information before shopping:
- Set number and, if relevant, instruction section and step number.
- Element or catalog identifier.
- Exact color name.
- Required quantity.
- Whether the element is structural, decorative or a minifigure accessory.
Try LEGO’s replacement service and Pick a Brick first
LEGO’s replacement-pieces service and Pick a Brick are the first official checks for a missing element. Search using the identified part and color rather than a broad phrase such as “Orthanc pieces.” Official stock gives you a clear source and, when available, a new element that matches LEGO’s current quality standards.
Availability is the important limitation for retired models. LEGO explains that it sometimes runs out of a piece, especially for older sets, and cannot provide the exact replacement. The service may show a similar current element instead. Treat that as a choice, not an exact match: a substitute might preserve a wall’s function while changing its visible texture, color or silhouette.

When a substitute is acceptable
- Hidden structural element: a similar brick is often harmless if it has the same dimensions and connection points.
- Visible architectural detail: an alternate shape or color can noticeably change the finished model.
- Moving mechanism: compare axle length, friction and clearances before substituting.
- Minifigure or weapon: identity and color matter more than structural compatibility.
If the official service offers an alternative, compare it with the instruction image and decide whether completing the build or preserving screen-accurate appearance matters more to you.
Buy an exact part from a specialist marketplace when necessary
When LEGO has no exact stock, specialist marketplaces and fan catalogs are the practical next route. LEGO’s guidance acknowledges third-party retailers and fan sites as possible sources. BrickLink’s Lord of the Rings catalog can help you locate set inventories and individual listings, but each listing must be evaluated separately.

Before checkout, verify the exact color, quantity and condition. A used dark-gray element can look like a black one in a small photograph, and a listing may contain one piece when your build needs four. Check seller location and shipping time as well; a cheap part from another country may cost more after postage or arrive after your project deadline.
Understand catalog counts before you inventory a set
Catalog totals are not always interchangeable. BrickLink lists The Battle of Helm’s Deep (9474) as 1,332 parts and eight minifigures from 2012. For The Tower of Orthanc (10237), BrickLink lists 2,335 parts and five minifigures from 2013. LEGO’s official product page gives 2,359 pieces for 10237.

The 2,335-versus-2,359 difference does not prove that either source is wrong. “Pieces” and “parts” can be defined differently, and a catalog may count elements or accessories in a way that differs from LEGO’s headline product total. Use one inventory consistently when checking completeness, and do not present the two numbers as directly equivalent measurements.
If the paper booklet is missing
Requesting a replacement paper booklet is optional, not a prerequisite for rebuilding. The downloadable PDF is the predictable first step and is available immediately when the official page still hosts it. LEGO says a replacement physical instruction booklet can be requested through its replacement-pieces service if copies remain available.
Because printed stock for a retired set can run out, download and preserve the PDF even if you submit a paper request. A tablet stand, large monitor or printed pages can make the digital manual easier to follow than a worn original booklet.
A complete workflow for a partially missing set
- Gather identification evidence. Photograph the box, instruction cover, model sticker or baseplate markings. Write down every plausible set number.
- Confirm the official result. Search LEGO by number, open the matching product page and check the model image and release information.
- Download every PDF section. Keep the files together and label them with the set number.
- Inventory what you have. Sort by color and element type, then mark missing items against the manual and a catalog record.
- Resolve ambiguous parts. Compare shape, connection points and color; do not order from a photograph alone.
- Check LEGO stock. Search the replacement service and Pick a Brick for the exact element.
- Evaluate substitutes. Accept a current similar piece only after checking appearance and function.
- Search third-party listings. Filter by exact element and color, then inspect condition, quantity, seller location and shipping.
- Recheck before paying. Add all required quantities, calculate delivered cost and confirm that no accessory or minifigure component is missing.
Common problems and fixes
The search returns several sets
Use the number printed on the box or a trusted inventory record. If you have only a name, compare the LEGO product image, release year and piece description before downloading.

The PDF appears incomplete
Look for multiple files or sections on the product page. The Tower of Orthanc, for example, has three PDFs. Downloading only one section can make a complete manual appear truncated.
LEGO shows no exact replacement
Confirm the element and color once more, then check whether LEGO offers a similar current part. If the visible match matters, move to a specialist marketplace and search the exact catalog identifier.
A marketplace listing uses an unfamiliar color name
Compare the seller’s photographs with the catalog record and a known element from your collection. Ask the seller for clarification when lighting makes black, dark gray or reddish brown difficult to distinguish.

Return to the last step that worked and compare orientation, not just the replacement element. A correctly identified piece installed backward or in the wrong subassembly can create an apparent parts shortage several pages later.
What to verify before completing the purchase
- Set number and instruction section.
- Exact element identifier and color.
- Quantity required versus quantity offered.
- New or used condition.
- Seller location, handling time and shipping method.
- Delivered total cost, including any import charges shown at checkout.
- Whether an official substitute would meet your appearance and function requirements.
Current stock, seller offers and prices are location- and time-dependent. Check them at the moment you order rather than relying on an old listing or a catalog count. With the set number confirmed, the free official PDF downloaded and each replacement matched by identifier and color, even a retired Lord of the Rings model can be rebuilt methodically without guessing.
