If you want indie games beyond the biggest PC storefronts, start with itch.io for experimental, jam-made, browser-playable and creator-hosted projects; browse GOG for a curated indie category; and check the Epic Games Store for another large PC catalog. Then follow developers, read community posts and use themed events or bundles to find releases that ordinary store recommendations may miss.
Before you buy or install anything, check the individual game page for operating-system support, browser versus download play, price, demo availability, required client, age or accessibility information, and whether you receive the game directly or a key redeemed on another service.
What “beyond the major storefronts” means
Indie discovery is not a single alternative shop. It is a set of routes with different strengths. A creator marketplace may expose tiny prototypes and game-jam entries long before they appear in a large catalog. A curated store may offer a smaller, more selective list of finished releases. A second major PC store may carry a title that is unavailable on your usual platform, while developer pages and communities reveal projects that have not reached any large store.

A game described as “free” may be a browser project, a downloadable build, a demo or a pay-what-you-want release. A listing may provide a standalone installer, require a store client or issue a key for redemption elsewhere. The title page, not the storefront’s general reputation, is the authority for those details.

itch.io: the best first stop for unusual and small-scale games
itch.io’s official homepage describes the service as “a simple way to find and share indie games online for free.” Its discovery surfaces include tags, game jams, community areas, bundles, free games, demos and featured titles. The live catalog changes constantly and mixes browser games, downloadable projects, paid releases and experimental work, so treat any front-page selection as a momentary snapshot rather than a permanent ranking.
Find games with tags and theme pages
- Open the game-discovery area and begin with a genre, format or theme tag that matches your interest.
- Combine tags when the site allows it, such as a genre with “short,” “browser,” “co-op,” “horror” or another constraint.
- Read the project description and inspect screenshots before downloading. Tags are supplied by creators and can be broad or inconsistent.
- Use the game’s update history or developer log to see whether the project is actively maintained.
Use jams, bundles and demos
Game jams are timed events in which creators build around a prompt or deadline. Browsing a jam lets you see many small projects organized around one idea instead of relying on a popularity chart. Featured listings and themed bundles are useful when you want a hand-selected starting set. Demos can reveal a game’s control scheme and performance before you pay, but a demo does not guarantee that the full version supports the same platforms or features.
Play in a browser or download a build
Many itch.io projects use HTML5 and run in a browser. Others provide downloadable files for Windows, macOS, Linux or another platform. A creator’s project page identifies the available formats and usually includes installation notes. Browser play is convenient for a quick trial, while a download may provide better performance, offline access or controller support. Do not assume that a browser version includes every feature of a downloadable build.

Follow creators, not just individual games
Creator pages can contain a developer’s earlier releases, prototypes, jam entries and future updates. itch.io documentation explains that creators can build project pages, classify projects, apply tags and upload embedded formats such as HTML5 alongside downloadable files. Following a creator therefore works as an ongoing release feed. Check the creator’s update posts and support information when a project appears unfinished or stops working after an operating-system update.
Checks before installing or paying
- Confirm the listed operating system and processor or graphics requirements.
- Look for a demo, free version or pay-what-you-want option if you are unsure about fit.
- Read the installation instructions, especially for compressed archives or files that require a separate runtime.
- Check the date of the latest update and the comments for reports of broken downloads.
- Verify the payment terms and whether the purchase includes future updates or multiple platform builds.
- Download only from the project page or the destination explicitly identified by the creator.
GOG: a curated catalog with an indie category
GOG presents itself as a curated digital store and includes an Indie category. That makes it useful when you want a catalog with editorial selection rather than an open publishing marketplace. Browse the indie section, then narrow the results using the store’s filters and the game’s own specification panel.
What to verify on a GOG title page
- Supported operating systems and any stated hardware requirements.
- Whether the download is a standalone installer or is tied to the optional Galaxy client.
- Included languages, accessibility information and age rating where shown.
- Demo, trial, refund and update terms displayed for that specific game.
- Whether additional downloadable content is included or sold separately.
GOG describes its Galaxy client as optional, but do not generalize that statement to every feature or title. Read the individual listing to determine how installation, achievements, cloud saves and updates work for the game you are considering.

Epic Games Store: another PC catalog and a self-publishing route
The Epic Games Store is a broad PC catalog rather than a specialist indie marketplace, but it is still worth checking when a developer releases outside your usual store. Search by the exact title, inspect the game page and confirm country availability before assuming that a listing is purchasable in your region.
Developer-side terms, not a player discount
Epic’s distribution page, checked October 13, 2026, says developers receive a 100% revenue share on the first US$1 million in net revenue per product per year, followed by an 88%/12% model. It also lists a recoupable US$100 submission fee per game. Those are publisher terms and can change; they do not mean that every indie game is available on Epic or that a player receives a lower price.
On the same page, Epic reports more than 295 million users across 187 countries and support for 16 languages. Those figures are Epic’s own current claims, not an independent measurement. Availability, pricing, age requirements, refunds and content restrictions still depend on the individual title and the user’s country.

- Determine whether the game needs the Epic client or another launcher.
- Check whether online play, crossplay or account linking is required.
- Read the system requirements and supported languages on the title page.
- Review the regional price, refund conditions and any promotional end date shown at checkout.
- Confirm whether the purchase grants the game directly or supplies a key for another service.
Follow developers and communities for earlier signals
A storefront search box is only one discovery tool. Developer logs can reveal prototypes, patches and planned releases. Community discussions often surface short games that are difficult to find through a broad genre filter. On itch.io, jams, bundles, community areas and developer logs are built-in routes; elsewhere, use a community only after checking that it is active and relevant to the genre you play.
A practical follow-and-filter routine
- When you enjoy a project, open its creator page and follow the developer if that option is available.
- Read the creator’s update feed rather than relying only on a store-wide “new releases” list.
- Save promising projects to a personal list and revisit them after a major update or completed release.
- Compare recommendations from communities focused on a specific genre, accessibility need or play session length.
- Before downloading an unfamiliar build, inspect the project’s comments, update date and support contact.
Festivals, newsletters, streamers and external curated lists can also be valuable, but their schedules and quality vary. Treat a recommendation as a lead; verify the game’s own page for current platform, price and download information.

Choose itch.io when discovery matters more than polish
Start there when you want a short game, a prototype, a jam entry, a browser experience or a project from a very small team. Expect more variation in documentation, support and finish. The reward is access to work that may never fit a large storefront’s release pipeline.

Choose GOG when you prefer curation
Use GOG’s indie category when you want a more selective catalog and a conventional store page for each release. Spend time on the specifications panel because the exact download and client behavior belongs to the title, not the category label.
Choose Epic when you are checking availability across major PC catalogs
Search Epic when a developer announces a release there, when a title is missing from your usual store or when you want to compare regional purchase options. Its developer economics explain why some independent teams may choose the platform, but they do not replace a title-level compatibility check.
Choose creator and community feeds when you want what is next
Follow developers and browse jams or discussions when your priority is discovering projects early. This route requires more judgment than a curated store, so keep notes on update dates, demos and platform support.

A repeatable workflow for finding and safely installing an indie game
- Define the constraint. Decide whether you need browser play, Windows, macOS, Linux, a handheld-compatible build, local multiplayer, accessibility features or a free trial.
- Search two different routes. Use itch.io tags or jams for breadth, then check GOG or Epic for a finished release and clearer store metadata.
- Open the actual title page. Ignore assumptions based on a storefront’s general policies; read the game’s requirements, formats, price and update notes.
- Identify the delivery method. Confirm whether the game runs in a browser, downloads directly, requires a client or supplies a redemption key.
- Try before committing. Use a demo, free build or browser version when available. A demo is evidence about fit, not a promise that the final game has identical requirements.

- Assuming “indie” means small download. Team size and file size are unrelated; inspect storage and hardware requirements.

Using a major storefront as a comparison tool
You do not need to abandon large stores to discover games elsewhere. Steam’s official store currently exposes recommendation feeds, tag exploration, popular new releases, upcoming games, special offers and trending free games. Those surfaces are useful benchmarks: they can show how a title is categorized, reveal comparable games and help you notice a developer whose page you can then follow on another platform. The alternative routes remain valuable because they expose different catalogs, formats and creator relationships.
