Short answer: Start with Unsplash or Pexels and search for linen texture, fabric texture, woven texture, subtle texture or textured background. Choose a portrait image with enough resolution and relatively quiet space behind the Lock Screen clock. Download it, then open Settings > Wallpaper > Add New Wallpaper > Photos on your iPhone. You can apply it as a Wallpaper Pair or customize the Lock Screen and Home Screen separately.
Best places to find free textured iPhone wallpapers
Three practical sources cover most needs: large stock-photo libraries for downloadable textures, and Apple’s own wallpaper gallery for people who would rather use a built-in design. Unsplash and Pexels are discovery sites; they are not limited to pre-sized iPhone files, so you should check orientation, crop and clarity before downloading.

Neither stock library is established as objectively superior for image quality or selection. The better choice depends on whether you value a particular visual style, stronger filtering, or the simplest licensing explanation for your intended use.
Search with material words, not just “iPhone wallpaper”
A generic wallpaper search returns illustrations, gradients and busy photographs. Texture terms describe the surface you actually want, so begin with the material and then add a color or mood.

Useful search phrases

These phrases reflect the categories and tags surfaced by the image libraries; they are starting points, not promises that every exact query has a curated collection. Try singular and plural forms, then add terms such as portrait, phone, minimal, soft or high resolution when results are too broad.
Find a specific material or mood
For a warm, understated Lock Screen, combine a material with a light color: “linen texture beige” or “woven texture sand.” For a darker interface, try “stone texture dark,” “charcoal fabric” or “black paper grain.” If you want the texture to be visible without competing with icons, include “subtle,” “minimal” or “low contrast.”
Choose an image that works on an iPhone screen
A texture can look excellent in a gallery preview and still fail as a wallpaper because the clock, widgets and app icons cover the most interesting area. Evaluate the image as a phone background, not as a standalone photograph.
Prefer portrait framing
Portrait-oriented images usually require less aggressive cropping on an iPhone. Landscape images can work, but iOS may enlarge them until the sides disappear, making a repeating weave or centered pattern look uneven. Pexels provides an orientation filter that can reduce this problem.
Check resolution without treating one number as universal
Pexels gives approximate guidance of around 1170×2532 pixels or larger for modern phones. That is practical guidance, not a device-specific guarantee: iPhone models have different aspect ratios and display resolutions, and the Wallpaper editor may still crop the file. Download the largest sensible version available, then preview the crop on your own device.

Leave quiet space behind the clock
On the Lock Screen, the time is normally near the upper portion of the display and widgets occupy an area below it. A smooth or low-detail region in those places keeps the time readable. Avoid a sharp seam, a bright highlight or a high-contrast object directly behind the clock. Textures with a gentle gradient or consistent weave are usually easier to read than tightly detailed patterns.
Inspect the Home Screen separately
App icons cover much of the Home Screen, so a texture that looks balanced on the Lock Screen may become visually noisy underneath icons. Look for a composition that can tolerate partial coverage. If it cannot, use a separate Home Screen image or a softened, color-adjusted version when iOS offers that option.
Download the image and verify its terms
Open the image’s individual page rather than saving a thumbnail from a search grid. The detail page is where the current license, download controls and creator information are normally presented.
- Open the selected image’s page on Unsplash or Pexels.
- Confirm that the image is available under that platform’s current license and inspect any notices about recognizable people, private property, trademarks or other protected material.
- Choose the largest practical download. If the site offers several sizes, avoid a small preview intended only for web display.
- Save the file to Photos or Files, then make sure it is actually available in the Photos picker on your iPhone.
For a personal phone background, this is usually a straightforward download-and-set task. A free image license does not automatically clear every element visible in the frame, however. A logo, artwork, recognizable person or private property may carry separate rights, which matters if you later reuse the image in advertising, a product, a publication or another commercial project.
Set a downloaded texture as your iPhone wallpaper

- Open Settings.
- Tap Wallpaper.
- Tap Add New Wallpaper.
- Select Photos, then choose the downloaded texture.
- Adjust the crop and any available Lock Screen options.
- Tap Add.
- Choose Set as Wallpaper Pair to use the setup on both screens, or choose the option to customize the Home Screen separately.
After you save it, lock the iPhone and wake it again to inspect the clock, widgets and image crop at the actual display size. Return to the wallpaper editor if an important part of the pattern is hidden or the clock loses contrast.
Use different treatments for the Lock Screen and Home Screen
A single file does not have to serve both screens in exactly the same way. The Lock Screen benefits from a clear upper area and enough contrast for the time. The Home Screen benefits from lower visual competition so app labels remain easy to scan.
When a Wallpaper Pair is appropriate
Use a pair when the texture is consistent, low contrast and attractive under icons. A uniform beige linen or softly mottled paper surface often works well without further adjustment.
When separate screens are better
Customize the Home Screen independently when the Lock Screen crop has a focal area that icons would obscure, or when the texture is dark enough that icon labels become difficult to read. A simpler crop, a flatter color treatment or a plain companion background can make the two screens feel coherent without forcing the same composition.
Unsplash and Pexels licensing: what “free” does and does not mean
Unsplash
Unsplash states that its images may be downloaded and used free for personal or commercial projects without permission or required attribution, although attribution is appreciated. Its license does not permit selling images without significant modification or compiling images to recreate a competing service.

That permission concerns the image as licensed by Unsplash; it is not a blanket release for every recognizable element in the photograph. Consider separate rights when a texture includes a person, a private location, a trademark, artwork or another copyrighted work. Using a plain fabric or stone texture as your own phone background is less complicated than redistributing it as part of a commercial wallpaper collection.

Pexels says its images are free to download and use under the Pexels License, with no attribution required. The terms prohibit distributing the material on a standalone basis as wallpapers or compiling it to replicate a competing service. That restriction is especially relevant if you plan to republish the files, sell wallpaper packs or build a wallpaper app.
Downloading one image for your own iPhone is a different use from offering the unmodified file to other people. If your purpose changes, reread the current license and terms on the image platform before publishing or monetizing the file.

This is a workflow choice rather than a quality ranking. Preview several candidates at the same size and select the one that remains legible and balanced after iOS crops it.

The image looks blurry
Return to the source page and download a larger original instead of a thumbnail or preview. An image that is already small cannot be made genuinely sharper by changing an iPhone setting.

The crop cuts off the texture’s best area
Use a portrait alternative, choose a file with more empty space around the focal detail, or reposition the image in the Wallpaper editor. Landscape files are more likely to lose their edges during portrait cropping.
The clock or widgets are hard to read
Select a lower-detail region behind them, choose a texture with less contrast, or use a different image for the Lock Screen. A visually striking pattern is not useful if it reduces basic legibility.
App icons disappear into the background
Customize the Home Screen separately and choose a calmer crop or companion color. Check several pages of icons, not just the first page, because icon colors vary.

The downloaded file does not appear in Photos
Verify that the download completed and was saved to Photos rather than only to a browser’s temporary location or the Files app. If it is in Files, use the share or save command to copy it into Photos, then reopen the wallpaper picker.
