For free PC demos outside Steam Next Fest, start with itch.io’s demo catalog, GOG’s dedicated demos collection, and the Demos section on the Epic Games Store’s Free Games page. Filter by your operating system and preferred format, then open each game’s own listing to confirm whether it is a downloadable build or browser game, what inputs it supports, and whether the offer is a true demo rather than a prologue, playtest, or free-to-play title.
Three reliable places to begin
These storefronts organize free previews differently, so the best destination depends on how you want to search. itch.io works like a large, tag-driven discovery catalog. GOG maintains a dedicated page for free demos. Epic Games Store puts demos in a section of its broader Free Games page, alongside offers that are not demos.

The catalogs are live inventories rather than fixed databases. A game can disappear, move to another collection, or change its availability, so use the current storefront page when you are ready to download.

1. Open the demo-tagged catalog
Use itch.io’s demo tag as your starting point, then switch to the free view if you only want demos with no purchase price. The catalog includes both downloadable projects and games that run in a browser, so the tag is a discovery tool rather than a guarantee of one delivery format.

2. Set the platform before browsing deeply
Choose Windows, macOS, Linux or browser play according to the computer you intend to use. A result count shown for the free demo view includes multiple supported formats; it is not a count of Windows downloads alone.
3. Narrow by the way you play
Genre and session-length filters help when you want a short sample, a role-playing game, a puzzle, or another specific style. Input-method filters can identify keyboard-and-mouse games, gamepad support and, where a creator has supplied the metadata, named controller types.
4. Read the individual project page
Before downloading, check the game’s own listing rather than relying only on search tags. That figure was captured within the preceding three weeks, covers the catalog’s supported formats and is not a permanent total or a Windows-only number. Treat it as an indication of scale, not a promise about what you will see today.

Use the dedicated demos page
GOG’s official demos page is designed for free previews. Browse the current collection, then open a product page to check the release information and the exact access terms. The collection is maintained separately from the store’s paid games, which makes it a useful first stop when you do not want to sift through a general free-games feed.

Check the festival collection when it is active
GOG also maintains a Games Festival demos collection for periods when that event collection is running. It is a second route to time-limited or event-focused previews, not a guarantee that every festival listing remains available after the event.
Confirm the offer type
A page labeled as a demo should provide a preview of a larger game, but store collections can change. Read the product description and purchase panel to determine whether you are viewing a free demo, a paid game that happens to offer a demo, or another kind of free experience. Availability and listings can change without preserving an older collection order.
Using the Epic Games Store Free Games page
Open the Demos section
The Epic Games Store’s official Free Games page separates demos from other offers. Go directly to the Demos section instead of assuming that every tile on the page is a playable preview.
Do not confuse three different offers
- Demo: a limited preview of a game that is normally sold or distributed as a larger release.
- Free-to-play game: a complete game offered without an upfront purchase under its own access model.
- Giveaway: a full game made available for a limited claim period.
Epic places these categories on the same broad Free Games destination, but they have different access terms. Open the individual listing and confirm that its label and description match the kind of preview you want.
Check the live selection
The selection changes, so avoid publishing or saving a fixed list as if it were permanent. When recommending a title to someone else, point them to the current Demos section and tell them to verify the listing before starting a download.

What to verify on every demo listing
Store labels are useful for discovery, but the game’s own page is the authority for the practical details you need before installing or launching.

- Delivery format: distinguish a downloadable build from a game that runs in a browser. A browser entry may not provide a conventional installer, while a download may not offer an online version.
- Access type: determine whether the page describes a demo, prologue, playtest, prototype, free-to-play game or giveaway. These labels describe different scopes and expectations.
- Input: check whether the creator lists keyboard and mouse, a gamepad or a specific controller type. Do not assume controller support because a game appears in a PC catalog.
- Requirements and instructions: read the creator’s download notes, launch instructions and any stated system requirements before committing storage or time.

Choose a destination by your priority
You want the widest discovery surface
Start with itch.io. Its demo tag spans many genres and formats, and its filters let you combine platform, price, genre, session length and input method. This is the most flexible route when you are willing to browse unfamiliar projects and inspect individual pages.
You want a storefront page devoted to previews
Choose GOG’s dedicated demos collection. It provides a focused list rather than requiring you to assemble results from a general search. If a Games Festival demos collection is active, check that as a second page for event-related previews.
You already use Epic’s free-offer page
Open the Demos section there and ignore the neighboring free-to-play and giveaway categories unless those are also what you want. This route is convenient when you prefer a single storefront account and its existing library workflow, but the inventory is controlled by the live page rather than a permanent catalog.
You need a browser game immediately
Use itch.io’s platform filters to select browser play, then confirm the project page says it launches in the browser. Do not infer browser support from a thumbnail or from the demo tag alone.

You need a controller-friendly title
Use itch.io’s input filters to look for gamepad or a named controller type, then verify the same support on the game page. A controller is optional for browsing and for many PC demos; it is worth prioritizing only when the specific game’s controls make one desirable.

Common reasons a “free demo” is not what you expected
The result is a prologue or playtest
Some storefronts surface several kinds of free previews together. A prologue may be an opening chapter, while a playtest is an evaluation build that can change or disappear. If you need a conventional time-limited or feature-limited demo, read the listing language and choose one explicitly described that way.
The game does not run on your computer
Catalog counts and tags can cover several operating systems. Recheck the individual listing for Windows, macOS, Linux or browser support before downloading. A large result total does not mean every entry supports your platform.
You expected a download but received a browser launch

Store catalogs and event collections are dynamic. Reopen the current collection and product page, because a demo can move, expire or be replaced while the storefront remains available.
