Start with itch.io if you want the strongest indie focus, free games, browser-playable projects, and listings explicitly labeled as demos. Check GOG for a dedicated demo catalog with an Indie tag mix, and use the Epic Games Store browse page’s Free and Game Demo filters when you want a larger storefront. Catalogs change, so open each game’s page to confirm that it is currently free, is really a demo rather than a prologue or playtest, and supports your operating system and preferred play method.
What “free indie demo” can mean
Storefront labels are not interchangeable. A complete free game, a demo, a prologue, and a playtest can all appear in a browse result, but they offer different amounts of content and may have different installation requirements.
- Demo: a limited preview of a larger game, usually identified by a demo label or by wording on the game page.
- Complete free game: the full project is available at no cost; it is not necessarily a preview.
- Prologue: a standalone opening chapter that may be presented as its own release rather than a time-limited test.
- Playtest: a testing build whose availability, access conditions, or content can change independently of the finished game.
The catalog pages covered here show discovery features, not guarantees that every result is a conventional demo. Always read the individual listing before downloading or launching anything.

itch.io: the best first stop for indie-heavy discovery
itch.io’s current discovery pages surface games with Free and Web labels and include projects whose names or listings explicitly identify them as demos. Its fresh-games section describes the catalog as constantly updating, which is useful when you want small or newly published projects rather than only established releases.

The service is especially useful for two kinds of searches: games you can start in a browser and downloadable experiments from very small teams. The page-level labels help you narrow the list, but they do not by themselves tell you whether a free item is a demo or a complete game.
How to search itch.io
- Open the discovery or fresh-games area.
- Use the Free label or filter to remove paid results.
- Use the Web label when you want a browser-playable project.
- Search for listings whose title or description identifies them as a demo.
- Open the game’s own page and read the description, download section, and platform information before starting it.
If a result is marked Free and Web but does not call itself a demo, treat it as a complete free game unless the game page says otherwise. Conversely, a project named “demo” may still require a download rather than running in the browser.
GOG: a dedicated demo catalog with an indie narrowing option
GOG maintains a dedicated Demo catalog and exposes a Demo filter. Its page also offers a Demo + Indie tag combination, giving you a direct way to narrow a broad demo list toward independent games.

This is a more focused route than searching the entire storefront because the demo catalog establishes the format first. The Indie tag then narrows the audience fit. The reviewed page does not establish browser-play support for the catalog, so check each listing for its installation method and system requirements.
How to search GOG
- Open GOG’s demo catalog.
- Apply the Demo filter if you arrived through a general browse page.
- Choose the Indie tag or the combined Demo + Indie view.
- Open a game’s product page and verify the current price, available download, operating-system support, and the exact description of the included content.
- Install only after confirming that the listing is a demo rather than a similarly labeled prologue or other preview format.
GOG’s “Try before you buy!” wording is storefront copy, not a promise that every demo is available in every country or on every computer.
Epic Games Store: use both Free and Game Demo filters
The Epic Games Store browse page provides a Free price filter and a Game Demo type filter. Demo entries appear among the results. Because Epic’s catalog is broader than indie games, the two filters identify free demos but do not, on their own, make the list indie-only.

How to search Epic
- Open the store’s browse page.
- Set the price filter to Free.
- Set the type filter to Game Demo.
- Inspect each result for independent-development cues in its description, publisher information, or tags if indie status matters to you.
- Open the product page and confirm the current price, platform requirements, and whether the item is a demo, prologue, playtest, or complete free game.
If the combined filters return too many mainstream or publisher-backed releases, use the game page’s tags and description to make the final judgment rather than assuming that every result is indie.

- Confirm the format. Read the title and description to determine whether it is a demo, complete free game, prologue, or playtest.
- Confirm the current price. A result can move between free and paid status, or a free access period can end. Check the individual product page rather than relying on an old search result.
- Check the platform. Look for the supported operating system and any stated hardware or software requirements. A free listing does not establish compatibility with every operating system.
- Check how it runs. A Web label or browser note indicates a browser route; otherwise, look for a downloadable build and its installer details.
- Check regional availability. Store visibility and access can differ by country or region. If the page is unavailable or the price is missing, do not assume the item has been removed globally.
- Read the included-content description. A demo may be a short slice, a single level, or another limited portion. The store page is the appropriate place to learn what is included.
Browser play versus downloading
When a browser listing is the better choice
On itch.io, the Web label lets you prioritize games that can be launched in a browser. This is convenient when you want to sample a project without installing a build, and it is a quick way to explore unfamiliar creators. Browser availability is a listing attribute, not a guarantee of identical performance across browsers or devices; use the game page’s own instructions if it names a supported browser or input method.
When to choose a downloadable demo
Downloadable builds are the normal route when a project is not marked Web or when the listing provides a desktop package. Before downloading, check the operating-system entry, file size when stated, installation instructions, and whether the build is labeled as a demo or another preview format. A storefront’s free status says nothing by itself about storage, graphics hardware, or system-version requirements.

The result is free but not a demo
Return to the individual page and read its description. On itch.io especially, Free and Web labels can identify complete free games as well as demos. Keep the game if you want a full free experience; otherwise, use wording such as “demo,” “trial,” or “preview” to refine the search.

The result is a prologue or playtest
Do not treat those labels as interchangeable with a demo. A prologue may be a standalone opening chapter, while a playtest can change or close without notice. Decide whether that format meets your goal and verify any access conditions shown on the listing.
The demo cannot run on your computer
Recheck the product page’s operating-system and hardware requirements. The catalog evidence does not establish that any particular demo works on every operating system, and no individual downloads were tested for this guide. If the page lists another build or a browser version, use that option; otherwise, choose a result with compatible requirements.
The page is visible but unavailable in your region
Catalog inventory and regional access can change independently. Check the game page while signed in to the relevant storefront account and look for a current availability or purchase message. Do not infer worldwide availability from a search result seen in another region.
The filter returns too many games
On itch.io, combine Free with Web or search for demo wording. On GOG, use the Demo + Indie tag mix. On Epic, keep Free and Game Demo selected, then inspect each listing for indie cues because the overall catalog is broader.

- You want the most indie-oriented starting point: use itch.io’s discovery pages.
- You want to play in a browser: start with itch.io and look for Web labels.
- You want a catalog built around demos: open GOG’s Demo catalog and add the Indie tag.
- You already browse Epic: apply Free and Game Demo, then verify indie status on each game page.
- You need a specific operating system: begin with any store, but make platform verification the deciding step before downloading.
Keeping your search current
