Free book mockups are available as downloadable Photoshop PSD scenes and as browser-based tools. Choose a PSD when you want to edit a scene or control its layers; choose an online tool when you want to upload a cover, position it on a rendered book, and export without building the scene yourself. A mockup is a presentation image, not a print-ready book cover.
What kind of book mockup do you need?
Start with the finished image you want to show. A cover-only mockup displays the front cover on a closed book. Other scenes show an open spread, a stack of books, a book held in a hand, or a bookcase. Match the scene to the book’s format—hardcover, paperback, square, portrait, or landscape—and to whether you need to show interior pages as well as the cover.
- For a single cover preview: choose a closed-book scene with the correct binding and orientation.
- For an interior or layout preview: look for an open-book mockup that lets you place artwork on the visible pages.
- For a lifestyle presentation: consider an in-hand, stacked-book, catalog, or bookcase scene.
- For a nonstandard format: check the mockup’s dimensions and proportions before downloading; a square design will not automatically fit a portrait book.

PSDCovers says its free mockups require no attribution and have no usage limits; that statement applies to its own mockups, not to files from other providers. Can you make a book mockup without Photoshop?
Yes. Canva offers an online book mockup workflow: open a design, select a book mockup, upload or choose cover artwork, adjust its crop, alignment, size, or orientation, then download or use the result. The official book mockup page describes hardcover, paperback, square, and portrait styles. This route suits a quick cover presentation; it is not the same as downloading a layered PSD for detailed scene editing.

- Open Canva’s book mockup page and start a design.
- Choose a mockup style that matches the book format and scene you want.
- Upload your cover artwork or select artwork available in the editor.
- Adjust the placement, crop, size, and orientation so the cover fits the rendered book.
- Download or use the finished design. Canva’s mockup page lists PDF, SVG, JPG, and PNG export formats; available choices may depend on the design and account.
Canva states that Free users can create and use up to 2,500 mockups before needing Pro for further use. This is a vendor-stated allowance on its general mockup page, checked October 7, 2026; features and limits can change. Canva also says generated mockup images may be used in personal and commercial projects but may not be resold or redistributed as new mockups or images. Review the current Canva content license agreement and applicable product terms before commercial use.

- Software and file type: confirm whether it is a PSD and whether your editor supports the features it uses.
- Editability: look for smart objects or organized layers if you need to replace the cover or adjust the scene. A flat image offers less control.
- Dimensions and views: verify pixel dimensions, orientation, binding, and whether the download includes front, spine, back, or interior views.
- License: check attribution requirements, commercial-use permissions, and restrictions on redistribution for that exact download.
- Availability: confirm that the provider still offers the file and that the download description matches what you receive.

Choose based on the output you need, not the word “free”: a PSD is a better fit for scene-level control when you have compatible software, while a browser tool is more direct when you need to place a cover and export a presentation image.
