For U.S. cultural-resource-management (CRM) work, start with the American Cultural Resources Association (ACRA) Job Board. Then search the Society for American Archaeology (SAA) Career Center for a wider mix of archaeology, university, research, and faculty jobs; check the Society for Historical Archaeology (SHA) Job Board as a complementary source; and finish on the employer’s own careers page before applying. These boards expose different parts of the market, and none guarantees that every listing is current, complete, or independently vetted.

Use this search order

The order matters because CRM openings are distributed differently from academic and general archaeology jobs. ACRA is the most targeted first stop for consulting and compliance work. SAA broadens the search to research and university employers. SHA adds another professional feed, while an employer’s site is the place to verify the vacancy and submit the final application.

1. ACRA Job Board for CRM-specific openings

ACRA represents the cultural-resource-management industry and links to a dedicated “Jobs in Cultural Resource Management” board. Its live inventory has included seasonal and permanent field positions, archaeological technicians, project managers, principal investigators, architectural historians, GIS specialists, and historic-preservation roles. The mix is primarily U.S.-oriented and changes as employers add or remove vacancies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use ACRA first when your search terms include CRM, cultural resources, Section 106, field technician, archaeological survey, historic preservation, architectural history, GIS, or principal investigator. Read each listing as a snapshot rather than proof that the position is still open. Follow the listing to the employer’s application page, where the current deadline, instructions, and eligibility rules should be confirmed.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

ACRA also has a salary-posting rule for new listings. The association states: “As of June 29, 2022, ACRA will now require salary information such as compensation, salary range, or minimum salary for postings on our job and internship boards.” Older posts may or may not contain compensation details, so the absence of a salary on an older advertisement does not establish that the job is unpaid.

2. SAA Career Center for a broader archaeology search

The Society for American Archaeology’s Career Center supports keyword and location searches, job-seeker accounts, résumé posting, applications, and job matches. Its visible listings span CRM employers as well as universities, research institutes, and faculty positions. That breadth is useful if you are open to more than consulting fieldwork or want to compare private-sector and academic options.

Run separate searches instead of relying on one broad query. Try CRM, cultural resources, archaeologist, archaeological technician, historic preservation, and the state or region where you can work. SAA also points readers toward jobs and fellowships, the Cultural Resource Management Expo at its Annual Meeting, and professional-development resources. Those features can help you discover employers and events, but each vacancy still needs individual verification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. SHA Job Board as a complementary source

The Society for Historical Archaeology’s job board carries archaeology and cultural-resource postings. Examples on the live page have included technician and staff-archaeologist roles. Use SHA alongside ACRA and SAA rather than assuming that one board reproduces the other boards’ inventory. A role absent from one association’s page may appear on another, especially when an employer targets a particular specialty.

4. The employer’s careers page for confirmation

Association boards often send you to an employer’s application system. Treat that destination as the controlling record. Confirm that the vacancy remains open, check whether the closing date has changed, and read the complete employer notice before tailoring your résumé or cover letter. The employer page may contain duties, travel rules, salary structure, benefits, required documents, and instructions that were shortened in the association-board summary.

How the three boards differ

The sources do not establish placement rates, listing-completeness scores, job-seeker fees, or a ranking based on hires. The useful comparison is scope and function:

Board Primary specialization Search or account features Roles visible in the board material Application path
ACRA Job Board CRM industry openings Dedicated CRM listings Seasonal and permanent field work, technician, project-management, principal-investigator, architectural-history, GIS, and historic-preservation roles Listings can link to the employer’s application page
SAA Career Center Broad archaeology, including academic and research work Keyword and location search; job-seeker accounts; résumé posting; applications; job matches CRM, university, research-institute, and faculty roles Use the vacancy details and follow the employer’s instructions
SHA Job Board Historical archaeology and related cultural-resource work Professional job board Technician and staff-archaeologist examples, plus other archaeology and cultural-resource posts Board entries may direct you to fuller employer details

A repeatable search workflow

  1. Define your workable area. List states or regions where you can legally work and where you can realistically travel. Separate jobs you would relocate for from jobs requiring a daily commute.
  2. Search ACRA with CRM terms. Start with the exact role you want, then broaden to related titles. A search for “archaeologist” alone can miss GIS, architectural-history, preservation, and project-management openings.
  3. Run parallel SAA searches. Use both a job keyword and a location. Save a broad search for “archaeologist” and narrower searches for “CRM,” “cultural resources,” “archaeological technician,” and “historic preservation.”
  4. Check SHA for additional postings. Pay particular attention to technician and staff-archaeologist advertisements that may not be present on ACRA or SAA.
  5. Record each vacancy once. Keep the employer, job title, source board, posting date, closing date, location, employment type, pay basis, and application URL in a tracking sheet. This prevents duplicate applications and makes it easier to spot expired copies.
  6. Open the employer’s notice. Compare the board summary with the employer’s full description. Use the employer’s current requirements and application method, not an older copy saved in a search result.
  7. Recheck before submitting. A closing date, hiring contact, upload requirement, or work location can change after the association listing was posted. If the employer page no longer shows the role, do not assume the board copy is still actionable.

Evaluate every opening before you apply

A job title does not tell you whether an opening fits your schedule, qualifications, or finances. Review the following fields in the posting and write down the answer before applying.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Posting and closing dates

Note when the advertisement was published and when applications close. A listing with no visible deadline needs extra checking on the employer site. Treat an old association-board entry as unconfirmed until the employer still displays it.

Employment type and seasonality

Distinguish seasonal, temporary, on-call, full-time, and permanent work. A seasonal field job can provide concentrated experience but may end after a defined project season. An on-call role may offer less predictable hours than a permanent staff position. Do not infer duration from the title; use the employer’s stated dates.

Location, travel, and field conditions

Look beyond the office address. Field assignments can involve extended travel, long days, rugged terrain, and carrying equipment. Determine whether travel is occasional or continuous, whether multiple project locations are expected, and whether the employer provides lodging or per diem. A position that appears local on a board may require work across several states.

Pay, benefits, and the practical value of the offer

Separate hourly pay from an annual salary and ask how many weeks or months the stated rate applies. Compare travel time, overtime rules where stated, per diem, lodging, health coverage, paid leave, and retirement benefits. A higher hourly figure may not produce more total income if the season is short or travel time is unpaid. Conversely, lodging or per diem can materially reduce out-of-pocket costs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ACRA’s post-2022 policy makes salary information more common on new ACRA job and internship listings, but older advertisements may omit it. A compensation figure in one vacancy is an individual offer, not a typical wage for archaeologists or a labor-market statistic. The reviewed sources do not provide current national median pay, hiring volume, or employment-growth figures.

Education and field experience

Read the minimum qualifications separately from preferred qualifications. The reviewed field-technician examples show that an employer may request a relevant bachelor’s degree or field-school experience, but those requirements belong to those specific postings; they are not universal rules for every archaeology job. Check whether the employer accepts equivalent experience, requires a particular degree, or expects prior compliance or survey work.

Physical and logistical requirements

Some field roles require extended walking, work in rugged terrain, long field days, and carrying equipment. Treat these as job requirements to assess honestly, not as incidental details. The same posting may also request GIS familiarity or a valid driving license. Verify which qualifications are mandatory and which are merely preferred.

Application materials

Follow the employer’s list exactly. One opening may request a résumé and cover letter; another may require references, transcripts, a writing sample, certifications, or responses in an online form. Submit through the employer’s system when the board links there, and keep a copy of the final materials and confirmation email.

Use better search terms

Archaeology employers use overlapping titles. Build a small set of searches rather than waiting for one perfect phrase:

  • CRM and compliance: CRM, cultural resources, cultural-resource management, Section 106, environmental compliance.
  • Field and entry roles: archaeological technician, field technician, field archaeologist, survey technician.
  • Experienced project roles: project archaeologist, project manager, principal investigator, staff archaeologist.
  • Specialties: GIS, architectural history, historic preservation, historical archaeology.
  • Academic and research roles: archaeology, archaeological research, faculty, research institute, fellowship.

Combine one role term with a location. For example, search “archaeological technician” plus a state, then repeat with “CRM” and “cultural resources.” This reduces the chance that a board’s title variation hides a relevant opening.

Common failure modes and fixes

Relying on one board

Symptom: You see only a handful of openings and assume the market is empty. Fix: Run the ACRA, SAA, and SHA searches separately. Their audiences and role mixes differ.

Applying from an expired copy

Symptom: A board lists a job, but the employer’s page has removed it or shows a different deadline. Fix: Treat the employer page as the confirmation step and do not submit after the employer has closed the requisition.

Comparing hourly and salaried offers as if they were identical

Symptom: A tempting hourly rate produces less total work than expected. Fix: Calculate the stated rate over the advertised season or contract, then add or subtract travel, lodging, per diem, and benefits using only what the posting confirms.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

Ignoring travel and physical demands

Symptom: You discover after an interview that the role involves extended travel, rugged terrain, or equipment carrying. Fix: Read the field-conditions section before applying and ask the employer for details that the notice does not answer.

Assuming one employer’s qualifications apply everywhere

Symptom: You rule yourself out because another posting required a specific degree or field-school background. Fix: Compare the minimum qualifications in the actual vacancy you want; requirements vary by role and employer.

Keeping a search current

Job inventory and deadlines are volatile. Check the boards on a regular schedule, but refresh the employer page immediately before applying. Save the date you last verified each opening and remove entries that have closed. When a board summary and the employer notice conflict, use the employer’s current notice and, if necessary, contact the hiring office listed there.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ACRA, SAA, and SHA are professional association sources, not a complete directory of every archaeology employer. Government hiring portals, regional archaeological societies, commercial aggregators, and social-media groups may contain additional vacancies, but they were not evaluated in the sources used for this guide. Absence from these three boards is not evidence that no suitable job exists.

For readers outside the United States

This search order is U.S.-focused because the dedicated boards and live examples reviewed are tied to U.S. professional associations and chiefly U.S. openings. If you are elsewhere, identify your national archaeology association, government heritage agency, and local CRM employers, then apply the same verification process: check dates, employment terms, pay, travel, qualifications, and the employer’s own application page. The boards above do not constitute a comprehensive international directory.
