The right Argos alternative depends on the product and the service you need. Currys is a natural comparison for technology and electricals, AO is especially relevant to large appliances, John Lewis combines home, technology and appliances with strong customer-service scores, Amazon UK offers broad marketplace-style choice, and Very covers many electrical and home categories. No retailer is automatically cheapest or best: compare the identical model, seller, stock status, delivery and returns before deciding.
How to choose an Argos alternative
Start with the item rather than the retailer. A shop that is convenient for a phone or games console may be a poor choice for a washing machine that needs installation and old-appliance removal. Decide which of these matters most:
- Product match: the exact model number, colour, capacity, generation and included accessories.
- Total cost: item price plus delivery, installation, connection, recycling or other mandatory charges.

Currys for a broad electrical comparison
Currys is a practical Argos alternative when you want to compare mainstream computing, phones, televisions, gaming and household electrical products in one place. Check whether the listing is sold directly by Currys or through another seller, and read the stated delivery and returns route for that listing. For a fair comparison, record the complete model number and the contents of the box; storage capacity, screen size, processor variant and bundled accessories can make two similar-looking listings different products.
For technology, check details that are easy to overlook in a short title: memory and storage size, network or connectivity version, regional model, included charger, remote or stand, and whether a console or appliance bundle contains the advertised game or accessory. A lower price for a stripped-down bundle is not a saving against a fully equipped version. Also confirm whether the warranty or fault route is through the retailer, the manufacturer or a marketplace seller.
Currys says it can match prices from UK retailers, including prices using an offer code, when both products are available and ready for delivery. The promise is conditional, so confirm the current terms, the identical-product requirement and the way a claim must be submitted before paying. A lower price for an unavailable item, a different seller or a product with different delivery status is not a like-for-like match.
John Lewis for service-conscious technology purchases
John Lewis covers technology, electricals and home products and can be useful when returns and support are more important than finding the lowest displayed price. On every candidate listing, check who dispatches and sells the item, the stated condition, the warranty or manufacturer-support route, delivery date and the returns terms shown for that seller. Two listings with the same product title can have different sellers, prices, delivery promises and support arrangements.
Use the exact offer selected at checkout, not only the first price displayed on a search page. Check whether the item is new, refurbished or another stated condition, and whether accessories or a manufacturer’s guarantee are included. For a high-value purchase, save the order details and seller information so you know whom to contact if the item arrives damaged or develops a fault.

They describe surveyed experiences across the retailer category, not the likely outcome of your specific order.

Large appliances: why AO belongs on your shortlist

- What happens if the appliance is damaged, does not fit or develops a fault?

AO is particularly relevant to large-appliance shopping, while John Lewis and Currys provide alternative ranges to compare. Which? home-appliance coverage reports John Lewis at 88% and identifies AO, Euronics and Lakeland at 85%, 85% and 82% respectively as recommended providers in the described survey. Those are historical, survey-specific customer figures; they do not establish today’s stock, delivery charge or installation availability.
Measure access before ordering
Record the appliance’s packaged and unpackaged dimensions, then measure doors, corridors, stairs, lifts and the final installation space. Check hinge direction, ventilation clearances, water and waste connections, socket position and any manufacturer requirements. A cheaper appliance that cannot pass through the entrance or be connected safely is not a cheaper purchase.
Ask whether the delivery team needs the path clear, whether doors or packaging must be removed in advance and what happens if access is judged unsafe. Keep the product’s required clearances in the comparison notes. Two appliances with the same external width can have different depth, hinge or ventilation needs.
Separate product price from service price
Retailer pages may show delivery, installation and removal as selectable services rather than part of the headline price. Add every required service to the basket before comparing totals. The available charge and service scope vary by product, postcode and date, so do not assume that a service offered by one retailer is included by another.
Compare the complete outcome: appliance, delivery slot, connection, old-unit removal and the support route if the machine arrives damaged or fails. Record any preparation the retailer requires, because a missed connection or unsuitable access can create delay even when the appliance itself is in stock.
Home goods: comparing John Lewis, Amazon UK and Very
For furniture, bedding, kitchenware, storage, lighting and other household goods, compare more than the photograph and headline price. Confirm measurements in centimetres, materials, finish, assembly requirements, weight limits and what is included. For bulky or made-to-order goods, read the delivery restrictions and return conditions before ordering; collection may be more complicated or costly than returning a small parcel.
John Lewis is a broad home and technology option. Amazon UK provides many brands and sellers, so inspect the individual listing and seller terms. Very is another source for electricals and home goods, but the relevant range and current offer must be checked for the particular category. A search result showing a sale does not prove that the same discount applies to every item or lasts beyond the displayed dates.
For a bulky item, check whether delivery is to the door, a room of choice or another specified point, and whether someone must be present. Confirm assembly, packaging disposal and collection arrangements before treating a low item price as the best deal. For soft furnishings or kitchenware, verify the material, dimensions and included pieces rather than relying on a styled image.

How to make an accurate, like-for-like price comparison
- Write down the exact identifier. Use the manufacturer model number or retailer SKU, not only a product title or photograph.
- Open the full listing. Confirm colour, size, capacity, generation, bundle contents, condition and warranty information.
- Check the seller. On marketplace pages, note the legal seller and who dispatches the item. A different seller can mean different returns and support.
- Verify live stock. Make sure the item is available to order now and that the displayed delivery date applies to your postcode.
- Add required services. Include delivery, installation, connection, recycling, assembly and any other unavoidable charge.
- Compare returns and fault handling. Record the return window, exclusions, collection arrangements and contact route for a defective item.
- Capture the terms. Save the price, stock status, delivery promise and promotion conditions because deals can change before checkout.
- Check what happens after checkout. Note order confirmation details, the named seller and the process for reporting damage, missing parts or a fault.
Retailer price promises make stock, seller and product eligibility material. A price-match request can fail even when the number on another page is lower if that item is unavailable, sold by an excluded seller, a different specification or subject to a disallowed promotion.

John Lewis
John Lewis restricts price matches to a named competitor set and excludes certain offer types. Before submitting a claim, check the current policy, confirm that the competitor and product qualify, and identify whether the competing price depends on a code, membership, bundle, cashback or limited allocation. Keep the evidence showing the identical model and its availability.
Read the exclusions rather than assuming every sale label qualifies. A clearance line, voucher-led offer or bundle can have conditions that make it ineligible even when the headline number appears lower. Submit the claim through the route specified in the current policy and retain the response.
Currys
Currys states that it can match UK retailer prices, including offer-code discounts, where both products are available and ready for delivery. Confirm the current eligibility rules and the submission route, then provide the exact product details and competing price requested by the policy. Do not assume that a marketplace listing, out-of-stock page or different delivery promise qualifies.
Availability must be checked for both products at the time of the claim. Make sure the competing offer includes the same specification, bundle and condition, and save the page showing its seller and delivery status.

When not to chase a match
If the saving is small but the alternative has a materially later delivery date, weaker returns process or no suitable installation service, the matched price may not be the best value. For large appliances, calculate the cost and inconvenience of a failed delivery or unsuitable installation before focusing on the last few pounds.
Deals are temporary: how to check an offer safely
Retailer deal pages are the appropriate place to verify a current promotion. Check the start and end dates, stock wording, eligible models, seller, delivery charge, required code and any account or payment condition. A search-engine result or an old sale page is evidence that a promotion existed, not a reliable annual sales calendar.
- Look for the promotion’s terms on the retailer’s own page.
- Check the final basket total rather than the crossed-out or recommended price.
- Confirm that the discount remains after selecting delivery, installation or assembly.
- Recheck stock and delivery immediately before payment.
- For a price match, save the competing page and its availability status at the time of the claim.
- Check whether the seller or product variation changes when you apply the promotion.
Prices, inventory, delivery charges and promotion rules can change without notice. Treat every deal as time-limited unless the retailer states otherwise. Do not claim that any named retailer is cheapest without a dated, like-for-like comparison of the same model and full delivered cost.

Ignoring the seller on a marketplace
The same product page may offer several sellers. Fix this by recording seller, dispatch method, condition, warranty route and returns terms for the exact offer selected.
Using the headline price for a bulky item
Delivery, installation or removal can change the total. Fix this by adding every required service before comparing.
Overlooking postcode and access restrictions
