For physical gold coins delivered to you, there is no evidence-backed dealer that is best for every buyer. Use the current editorial picks below as a shortlist, then compare the same coin, payment method, destination, and checkout date—including shipping and insurance—before choosing. For a gold IRA, compare account and storage terms separately: IRA storage is not the same as taking possession of a coin.
Which online gold dealers are worth comparing?
CNBC Select’s review, updated August 18, 2026, evaluated a dozen vendors and assigned different dealers to different use cases. These are that outlet’s editorial categories, not guarantees of the best price or experience for every order. Its page was not directly accessible for review, so treat the categories as a starting point rather than a comprehensive audit of the market.
| Dealer | Use case identified by CNBC Select | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| JM Bullion | Variety | Check whether the specific coin and size you want are available, and compare its full checkout price with other dealers. |
| APMEX | Free shipping | Check the cart’s shipping eligibility, including any minimums or exclusions; the category does not establish free shipping on every order. |
| Goldco | Selling or buyback | Read the buyback guarantee’s conditions and compare minimums and fees. CNBC Select’s summary also reports IRA minimums and fees, so do not assume it is a simple fit for a small, non-IRA purchase. |
| American Hartford Gold | Gold IRA storage | Compare account requirements, custody, and fees. This category is relevant to buyers considering an IRA, not a substitute for home delivery. |
Kitco: published delivery and resale terms
Kitco’s catalog lists gold coins for online purchase, and its published policies describe delivery and buyback mechanics. That makes it another candidate to compare, not proof that its all-in price beats another dealer’s. It also advertises storage and digital ownership options; those differ from buying a coin for delivery, so establish what you own, how custody and access work, and what fees apply before considering them.
Other names to use as comparison leads
A March 2026 DadAlt guide lists APMEX, JM Bullion, SD Bullion, BGASC, and Money Metals Exchange among its preferred online dealers. This is a third-party shortlist, not an official endorsement or evidence of current prices, shipping terms, or business ratings. Use names from it only as leads for your own comparison.

How to compare the real cost of a coin
Match the coin, size, and payment terms
Compare the same coin in the same size. American Gold Eagles and Canadian Gold Maple Leafs are familiar sovereign-mint examples. Kitco describes Eagles as 22-karat and Maple Leafs as 24-karat. A standard one-ounce Gold Eagle contains one troy ounce of pure gold; alloying means its total coin weight is greater than one troy ounce. Fractional coins are also available, but their per-coin premiums can differ.
Compare the all-in checkout total, not a headline premium
A bullion coin’s price generally reflects the live gold spot price plus a premium that can reflect minting, distribution, supply, and demand. Shipping and insurance can change which dealer’s quote is cheaper. Compare the same coin at the same time and with the same payment and shipping assumptions; a premium comparison captured under different conditions is not useful. Include taxes or other charges that apply to your order when calculating the total.

- ✔️Each coin contains 1/10 oz of gold.
- ✔️Obverse: Lady Liberty holding a torch with an olive branch.
- ✔️Reverse: The Type 1 reverse, used from 1986-2021, shows a male bald eagle in flight carrying an olive branch to his nest, where a female awaits with her young. The Type 2 reverse, introduced in 2021, shows a bold close-up portrait of an eagle.
- ✔️Each Gold Eagle is a sovereign monetized bullion coin fully guaranteed by the U.S. Mint.
Keep bullion and collectible value distinct
For bullion, pricing is primarily tied to gold content and the premium. A coin can also carry numismatic value based on rarity, condition, or design; paying extra for those attributes does not mean you will recover that premium when you sell. If your goal is gold exposure at a lower premium, do not treat a collectible coin as an equivalent low-cost bullion purchase.
What to check about shipping and insurance
Delivery terms are dealer-specific. Kitco’s U.S. and Canada policy, accessed October 7, 2026, lists standard shipping at $15 USD/CAD, free standard shipping on qualifying orders of at least $5,000 USD/CAD, and insurance at 0.65% of metal value. It lists insurance at 0.80% for Washington and 0.99% for Texas. Kitco gives an ordinary delivery estimate of two to five business days and notes that rare postal shipments can take longer. These are Kitco terms, not an industry standard; check the current policy and your checkout details before ordering.

- ✔️Each coin contains 1/10 oz of gold.
- ✔️Obverse: Lady Liberty holding a torch with an olive branch.
- ✔️Reverse: Portrait with an American bald eagle, a design by Jennie Norris in 2021.
- ✔️Each Gold Eagle is a sovereign monetized bullion coin fully guaranteed by the U.S. Mint.
- Confirm that the policy covers your destination and the specific delivery method.
- Check whether shipping is free for your order, and whether any minimum or exclusion applies.
- Identify how insurance is calculated and whether the checkout total includes it.
- Read the delivery estimate and any stated exceptions before paying.
How to assess a dealer’s buyback process
A statement that a dealer buys coins back is not a guaranteed resale price. Before buying, find out how the dealer sets its bid, which items it accepts, who is responsible for insured shipping, what verification is required, and when payment is made.
Kitco describes price locking at checkout or after it receives a shipment, insured shipping options, and payment typically processed one to two business days after receipt and verification. Those are Kitco’s stated terms, accessed October 7, 2026; review the current policy and conditions before relying on them.

Does U.S. Mint authorized-purchaser status settle the choice?
No. The U.S. Mint’s Bullion Authorized Purchasers page can help you check whether a business is an authorized purchaser, but the Mint cautions: “Please note, not all of these authorized purchasers sell bullion products to consumers.” The Mint says its bullion coins are widely available through online and physical coin and precious metal dealers. Authorized-purchaser status is a useful credential to investigate, not a guarantee of the best price, investment outcome, or consumer experience.
