For rare PS2 games, choose a marketplace by comparing the full delivered price, the seller’s return terms, and the deadline for reporting a problem—not just the asking price. PriceCharting is explicitly focused on video games; eBay and Mercari offer their own dispute procedures, but none of the policies covered here establishes that a PS2 game is genuine. Keep payment and communication on the platform, save the listing, and inspect the game immediately after delivery so you can act within the applicable claim window.
Which marketplace should you use?
The right choice depends on the exact game, your location, the transaction costs, and what recourse you would have if the delivered item differs from the listing. Compare the current listing and checkout screens: policies and fees can change, and the terms attached to an individual transaction may depend on when its listing was created or updated.

| Marketplace | What the cited policy provides | Costs and conditions to check | Fit for rare PS2 games |
|---|---|---|---|
| PriceCharting | Its marketplace is for video games in its database, excludes reproductions and fakes, and says buyers receive the ordered item or their money back. Sellers must offer a 14-day money-back return period beginning on the shipping date. | Buyers pay return shipping. PriceCharting says shipping within the US is free, with its cost included in the item price. The marketplace says it supports the US and Canada. | A game-focused place to look, provided the exact title is in its database and the listing is eligible. |
| eBay | Its Money Back Guarantee may cover eligible purchases that do not match the listing, subject to the policy’s case and return requirements. The policy includes handling for counterfeit concerns; some cases with strong counterfeit indicators may not require the item to be returned to the seller. | Read the live order’s case instructions and return requirements. The cited Authenticity Guarantee categories do not include video games. | Useful when the specific listing and seller meet your requirements, but do not assume a PS2 game will receive the platform’s physical authentication service. |
| Mercari | A buyer has 72 hours after confirmed delivery to report an eligible item that is not as described. If there is no report or rating, payment is automatically released after that window. After an approved return, the item must be shipped within three days. | For listings created or updated on or after January 6, 2025, Mercari states a 3.6% buyer protection fee on the item price plus buyer-paid shipping, and a 10% seller fee on those amounts. Older, unupdated listings may use a different transition fee. | Check the listing date, checkout total, and seller payout rather than assuming every listing has the same fee terms. |
These are different kinds of protection, not interchangeable guarantees. PriceCharting’s stated return period starts at shipment, while Mercari’s reporting window follows confirmed delivery; eBay’s remedy depends on eligibility and following its case process. Confirm the terms shown for your order before buying, and do not assume that a refund policy verifies a disc’s origin or edition.

Match the exact title and edition
Search for the full game title and the edition you intend to own. A special edition, regional release, or listing that includes a manual may not be equivalent to a standard disc-only copy. Read the item specifics and description carefully, then make a short checklist of what the seller says is included: disc, case, cover insert, manual, and any other stated extras. If an edition identifier matters to your purchase, ask the seller to show it clearly in a photograph rather than relying on a title or keyword in the listing.
#1 Best Overall
- Disc only. Original case and manual not included. Will come packaged in a generic case.
- This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
Judge the evidence, not the confidence of the description
Prefer photographs of the actual item. Look for clear views of the disc’s readable side, label side, case, manual, and any visible edition identifiers. A generic image, a single distant photograph, or wording such as “great condition” without item-specific detail leaves important questions unanswered. Ask concise questions before paying: Is this the actual copy pictured? What is included? Has the game been tested, and what does “tested” mean? A seller’s answer can clarify the listing, but it is not a substitute for evidence and does not itself prove authenticity.
Be cautious if the seller will not show the item, gives conflicting answers about what is included, or pressures you to complete payment outside the marketplace. An off-platform payment can take the transaction away from the platform’s documented order and complaint process. Keep messages and payment on the site or app, and do not use a separate payment arrangement because someone promises a discount.
Compare the delivered cost and the terms
Compare more than the visible item price. Add buyer-paid shipping and any marketplace fee shown at checkout; also consider whether a return would require you to pay postage. On PriceCharting, its US shipping cost is included in the item price, while the buyer is responsible for return shipping under the stated guarantee. On Mercari, fees depend in part on the listing’s creation or update date. The amount on the final checkout screen is more useful than an old screenshot, an estimate, or a fee description applied to a different listing.

- Drive through the largest GTA environment ever -- The game has three cities players can explore, for a gaming area 5 times larger than Vice City
- Recruit new characters into a street gang and take over by leading drive-by shootings against rivals Steal all-new vehicles, including bicycles
- Improved fighting elements -- smoother hand-to-hand combat, plus the ability to hold a weapon in each hand
- New graphics elements as cars get dirty and even rust, the longer you drive them
- Advanced role-playing elements -- Unlike previous GTA characters, Carl can swim and he needs to eat to survive
Use price guides and other listings as comparison points, not proof that a particular asking price reflects a completed sale. A high price does not establish that a copy is rare, genuine, or correctly described. Compare the condition and included contents as well as the title: a complete copy and a disc-only copy should not be treated as identical just because their listing titles match.
Check the seller and preserve the listing
Review feedback and the seller’s listing history when available. Look for consistency between the listing text, photos, and answers to questions. Save the listing details and order information in a way you can access after delivery; a record of what was promised makes it easier to identify a mismatch and follow the correct platform procedure. These are sensible transaction checks, not a guarantee that a particular marketplace will decide a future dispute in your favor.
What to know about authenticity
Marketplace protection and authentication are separate questions. eBay’s cited Authenticity Guarantee page lists watches, shoes, apparel, handbags and luxury accessories, trading cards, jewelry, and coins—not video games. Its Money Back Guarantee may address an eligible item that does not match its listing, including counterfeit handling, but that is not the same as a stated PS2-specific expert inspection.

- Hundreds of hours of nostalgic gameplay
- Enjoy a wealth of added features including original artwork, remixed music and playing tips
The marketplace policies covered here do not provide a procedure for distinguishing an original PS2 disc or edition from a reproduction. PriceCharting says reproductions and fakes cannot be sold in its marketplace, but that marketplace rule should not be read as a published disc-authentication test for buyers. If authenticity is essential, ask for item-specific photographs and documented details, and avoid treating a platform badge, refund policy, seller assurance, or high asking price as conclusive proof.
What to do when the game arrives
Inspect promptly and compare it with the saved listing
Open the package and check the contents against the listing while the order is still within the relevant reporting period. Confirm that the title and edition match, that the case and manual promised are present, and that the delivered condition is consistent with the photographs and description. If something is wrong, keep the item and packaging together, take clear photographs of the discrepancy, and avoid altering or discarding anything while deciding what the platform requires.
Use the platform’s case process, not a side agreement
Open the order in the marketplace and follow its current instructions for reporting a problem. Describe the mismatch specifically—such as a missing listed manual or a different item—and attach relevant evidence if the interface permits it. Keep subsequent messages in the platform, and do not close or withdraw a case because a seller proposes to resolve it through an unrecorded payment. Follow the order’s stated shipping directions if a return is approved; a return sent outside the prescribed process can complicate the record.

Timing is important. Mercari’s stated policy gives buyers 72 hours after confirmed delivery to report an item that is not as described; without a report or rating, payment is automatically released after that period. If Mercari approves a return, the buyer must ship it within three days. PriceCharting’s seller guarantee instead runs for 14 days from the shipping date, and the buyer pays return shipping. For eBay, use the case deadlines and return instructions displayed for the order, since its guarantee is subject to policy eligibility and procedure.

Make the listing specific and support every claim
Photograph the actual copy, including the disc, case, manual, and relevant identifying details. Use well-lit, in-focus images that let a buyer assess what is included and the visible condition; avoid substituting a stock photo for the item. State whether the manual or original case is included, describe visible wear, and explain what you have and have not tested. Do not call a game “authentic,” “complete,” or “tested” unless you can substantiate the exact claim. If you have not tested it, say so rather than letting a buyer infer otherwise.

Write the title and edition accurately, and answer questions through the marketplace. Keep a copy of the listing and photograph the item’s condition before packing. Use tracked shipping and retain the shipment record. Taking photographs of the packing process can help you maintain your own records, though no policy described here guarantees that a particular type of evidence will determine a dispute.

Calculate proceeds before choosing a platform
PriceCharting says account creation, listing, and selling are free, but PayPal payment-processing fees still apply. Sellers need a PayPal business account and must reside in the US or Canada. The marketplace also says new sellers or sellers with low reputations may be restricted from immediately listing very high-value items. Check that the exact game is in its database and that your account can list it before preparing the sale.
For Mercari listings created or updated on or after January 6, 2025, the stated seller fee is 10% of the item price plus buyer-paid shipping, and the buyer sees a 3.6% buyer protection fee on those same amounts. Listings created earlier and left unupdated may retain a different transition fee. Calculate your expected payout from the terms attached to your listing, not just the displayed sale price, and consider the buyer’s checkout total when setting an asking price.
Keep the transaction documented
Use the marketplace’s shipping label and messaging process when available, and preserve the order details, tracking information, and records of the item’s pre-shipment condition. Pack the disc and case so they are protected in transit. If a buyer reports a problem, respond through the platform and follow its instructions rather than moving the discussion to another service. Clear documentation cannot guarantee the result of a dispute, but it helps keep the facts of the transaction in one place.

Quick Recap
A quick decision checklist
- Before buying: Verify the exact title, edition, condition, included contents, seller’s evidence, full checkout total, and return terms.
- Before paying: Keep the transaction on-platform; pause if the listing is vague, the seller refuses reasonable item-specific questions, or payment is redirected elsewhere.
- When selling: Show the actual item, disclose what is and is not included or tested, check your account and fee requirements, and keep shipping documentation.
- After delivery: Inspect immediately, preserve the listing and packaging, and report a concrete mismatch through the order’s platform process before its deadline.
