If you mean Lionhead Studios’ original Black & White from 2001, there is no verified official Steam or GOG purchase listing identified in the available store check dated October 4, 2026. The GOG page is a Dreamlist request, not a sale or download. The practical route is to obtain a legitimate original PC CD-ROM, then follow the Black & White Community’s Windows 10/11 installation sequence. Linux and modern macOS users can also investigate the openblack engine, but it still requires files extracted from an original copy.
Do not buy or download a same-name storefront result without checking its developer and release information. A Steam result examined for this question was a different game, attributed to ZerocreationGame and CubeGame and dated March 2023.
First, identify the exact Black & White

- Use an administrator account. The guide calls for administrator privileges during installation and configuration.
- Install to the C: drive. Follow the guide’s requested location rather than choosing an arbitrary secondary path.
- Install the game from the disc. Let the original installer complete before applying updates.
- Apply official patch 1.1. Keep the sequence intact; do not skip ahead.
- Apply official patch 1.2. The guide places this immediately after 1.1.
- Apply unofficial patch 1.42. This is the community-recommended final patch in that Windows sequence.
- Do not install patch 1.3. The guide specifically advises against it.
- Run
runblack.exeas administrator. Set the executable to use administrator rights if Windows prompts for permission or the game fails to start normally. - Leave Windows Compatibility mode disabled. The guide warns that Compatibility mode creates more problems than it solves for this game.
Restoring the soundtrack
The community guide notes that the installer does not copy the soundtrack automatically. If you want the original music, copy the CD’s Audio folder into the game’s installation folder after installation. This is a separate content-copy step; it does not replace the patch sequence.

Common setup mistakes and how to respond
The game starts, but the patcher refuses to run
Recheck that you are working from a clean installation and that you applied 1.1, then 1.2, before 1.42. Confirm that the installer and patch programs have administrator permission. Do not add patch 1.3 simply because it appears in an old file list; the current community sequence says to omit it.
Windows Compatibility mode made things worse
Undo Compatibility-mode settings on the game executable and follow the guide’s administrator instruction instead. Compatibility mode is not presented as a required fix for this title.
The game has no music
Check whether the CD’s Audio folder was copied into the installation directory. The installer’s failure to copy that folder is expected according to the guide, so reinstalling patches alone will not restore the soundtrack.

The installer cannot see a disc
Verify that the optical drive can read the media. If you are using an ISO, confirm that it was created from your legitimate disc and is mounted before launching setup. A damaged disc or incomplete image is a media problem, not something the patch order can repair.

Compare the developer, release date, platform, and screenshots before purchasing. The title match on Steam is insufficient because the identified result is a different 2023 game.
Using Linux or modern macOS with openblack
openblack is an open-source engine project intended to run Black & White (2001). It is not a free distribution of the game. Its documentation states that the original, copyrighted game assets are required and will not be supplied by the project.

The project’s asset instructions describe extracting data from the original installer, usually on CD, and list official patches 1.10 and 1.2 in that extraction workflow. That numbering is distinct from the Windows Community guide’s 1.1, 1.2, and unofficial 1.42 sequence; do not assume that instructions for one route can be substituted for the other.
openblack documents using Wine for Linux and macOS. You still need a legitimate original copy from which to obtain the assets. The project should therefore be viewed as an alternative engine layer for owners of the game, not as a standalone replacement or a way to obtain copyrighted files.

What about the original Mac version?
The Black & White Community guide says the original Mac port runs only on older PowerPC Macs and is incompatible with modern hardware. That limitation concerns the native Mac release itself. It does not contradict openblack’s separate Wine-based instructions for current Linux or macOS systems.

If you own a modern Mac, the realistic choices supported by the available documentation are to use a Windows installation route on compatible hardware or investigate openblack with assets extracted from your original copy. The sources do not establish a guaranteed compatibility result for every current Mac model.

Because storefront pages and second-hand inventory can change, recheck the official stores and the individual resale listing on the day you buy. The available evidence does not establish a current price, a guaranteed seller, a particular retailer, or a setup that works on every Windows 10/11 machine.
Bottom line
For Lionhead’s 2001 Black & White, plan on finding legitimate original PC media rather than purchasing a verified modern digital edition.
