You can run an Arma Reforger server three ways: host a player session, operate a dedicated server yourself, or rent a managed server from a provider. For most communities that need persistent worlds, mods, scheduled restarts and cross-platform access without maintaining a machine, a managed provider is the practical choice. Compare Nitrado and GTX Gaming on slots, location, crossplay, Workshop support, backups, configuration control and cancellation terms before paying. Renting is optional: Bohemia Interactive says dedicated-server tools are available for local hosting as well as third-party hosting.
Which type of Arma Reforger server should you buy?
The word “server” covers very different arrangements. Choose the operating model before comparing prices.

A player starts a multiplayer session on a gaming PC or console. This is the quickest and cheapest way to play casually, but the session generally depends on that player staying connected. It is a poor fit for a community that expects a persistent scenario, regular availability, or a world that continues while the owner is offline.
Self-managed dedicated server
Bohemia Interactive Community documentation defines a dedicated server as “a server without any game instance launched; it purely processes game information and network synchronisation.” You supply the computer or virtual machine, install the dedicated-server tools, configure ports and files, apply updates, install Workshop content, and create your own backup and monitoring routine. This offers the most control and can be economical if you already have suitable infrastructure, but every failure, patch and restore is your responsibility.

Managed third-party server
A host supplies the machine, control panel, network connection and operating-system maintenance. You select a region and capacity, then manage the game configuration, mods and restarts through the provider’s tools. The monthly fee buys convenience and support rather than a guaranteed performance level: neither provider in the available evidence has an independent Arma Reforger benchmark or universal RAM specification.
How much capacity and memory do you need?
Do not select slots from a maximum number alone. Estimate your peak simultaneous players, then allow headroom for the heaviest modded scenario you actually run.

Start with peak concurrency
- Count the players likely to be online at the same time, not the total size of your community.
- Add room for scheduled events and occasional guests so the server does not fill at the first surge.
- Check whether the host charges per slot, by a fixed plan, or according to allocated hardware.
- Confirm that the selected plan can be increased without rebuilding the server or losing its save data.
There is no published, universal RAM requirement for Arma Reforger in the supplied provider evidence. Ask the host what CPU, memory and storage are assigned to your plan, whether resources are shared, and what happens when a large Workshop collection or AI-heavy scenario increases load. A slot count is not a performance guarantee.

What to check before ordering
1. Region and latency
Choose the data center closest to the majority of players, not necessarily the country where the administrator lives. Ask whether the listed location is the actual game-server region and whether you can move regions later. A geographically distant player may still experience delay even when the server is healthy, so publish the chosen region to your community before the first event.
2. Platform and crossplay compatibility
Confirm the exact PC, Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 support for the current Arma Reforger build and plan. “Crossplay” on a sales page is not enough if your group needs a particular console combination. Check whether console players can join modded scenarios, whether every participant must download the same Workshop items, and how the host handles a game update that changes mod compatibility.

3. Workshop mods and scenarios
Ask four separate questions: Can you install and remove Workshop items from the panel? Is there a storage or download-size limit? Can you edit the server configuration and load a custom scenario? Are mod updates automatic, scheduled, or manual? Keep a written list of Workshop identifiers and versions. When a patch breaks a mod, you need to know whether the host can roll back the configuration or only reinstall the newest files.
4. Backups, saves and migration
A backup feature is useful only if you know what it contains and how to restore it. Confirm the schedule, retention period, location, restore procedure and whether persistent saves survive a reinstall, plan change or move to another provider. Request an export method before investing in a long-running campaign. The Overthrow Reforger dedicated-server guide recommends Bacon, GTX Gaming and GPortal for its project, while reporting save-restart difficulties with Nitrado in that project. Treat that as a project-specific operational warning, not a universal performance verdict; use it as a reason to test your own save and restart workflow.

5. Administration and support
Inspect the control panel during the trial or cancellation window if possible. Useful controls include start, stop and restart, scheduled restarts, player and log access, configuration-file editing, permissions for additional administrators, and a clear view of resource usage. Ask whether support is available during your event hours and whether tickets are handled by staff familiar with Arma Reforger rather than general hosting agents.

If you plan to charge players, accept donations tied to access, or otherwise monetize the community server, follow Bohemia Interactive’s policy. The policy requires registration, approval and listing on the official server page. Approval is not implied by renting a server, so complete that process before collecting money or advertising paid access.

- Define the target. Write down peak players, required platforms, intended region, core mods, custom scenarios and the date of your first public event.
- Shortlist plans. Compare the slot count and price with your peak concurrency. For Nitrado’s US offer accessed on October 15, 2026, the published 30-day choices are 10 slots for $16.19, 20 for $24.99 and 32 for $39.49; the same offer describes custom sizes from 10 to 125 slots and runtimes from 3 to 365 days.
- Verify the build. Confirm that the provider supports the current game version and that automatic updates can be delayed or scheduled when a major patch threatens mod compatibility.
- Select the region. Pick the listed location nearest most players and record it in your community instructions.
- Install a minimal mod set. Start with the scenario and essential dependencies only. Launch once, test joining from each platform, and add optional mods one at a time.
- Configure administration. Create separate administrator access where available, set a restart schedule, and document the configuration outside the provider panel.

Common failure modes and fixes
Players cannot see or join the server
- Check that the server is running the same game build as the clients.
- Confirm crossplay is enabled in the current plan and that console support matches your group.
- Compare the required Workshop collection with the server’s installed list; a missing dependency can prevent a scenario from loading.
- Restart after changing network or configuration settings, then test with one unmodded session to isolate the cause.
A mod update breaks the scenario
- Record the last known-good mod versions and configuration.
- Disable the newest item, restart, and test before changing several mods at once.
- Ask support whether the host retains older files or offers a rollback; do not assume automatic updates can be reversed.
A restart loses progress
- Check whether the save was created in persistent storage and whether the restart was a clean stop.
- Use the provider’s documented restore process and verify that backups include saves, not only configuration files.
- Export a working save before migrating or reinstalling. If the host cannot explain the process, it is a material risk for a persistent campaign.
Performance degrades at peak times
- Compare the timing with player count, AI density and mod activity.
- Ask the provider for resource allocation details and whether the plan can be upgraded without data loss.
- Reduce AI or script-heavy content for a controlled test; this identifies workload effects without claiming a universal hardware requirement.
Which option fits which community?
- Small, occasional group: A player-hosted session may be sufficient if persistence and 24-hour availability do not matter.
- Modded community wanting a simple panel: A managed provider is usually the least administrative work. Compare Workshop workflow, backups and support before choosing on price alone.
- Technical administrator needing full control: A self-managed dedicated server provides deeper access, but budget time for patching, security, monitoring and recovery.
