Project Zomboid stores dedicated-server data under the operating-system account that launches the server. On Windows, start with C:Users<username>Zomboid; on Linux, start with ~/Zomboid (often /home/steam/Zomboid for a service running as steam). The executable files may be in a Steam or SteamCMD installation directory, but the active configuration and multiplayer world are in this user-data tree.
Server profiles are in Zomboid/Server. The persistent dedicated multiplayer world is in Zomboid/Saves/Multiplayer/<server>. Back up the world together with the profile files that created it, and always confirm the profile name and service account before editing anything.

A Zomboid installation has two distinct locations that are easy to confuse. The Steam or SteamCMD directory holds the game and server executables. The account that runs the process owns a separate Zomboid data directory containing profiles, saves, logs, and other server state. Moving or editing the executable directory does not necessarily change the live server.

The placeholders are significant. Replace <username> with the Windows account, <profile> with the server profile actually loaded at startup, and <server> with the multiplayer save directory name. A Linux server launched by steam normally writes to that account’s home directory, not to the home directory of your administrative login.

How to identify the account and data directory
The path follows the process owner, the container volume, or the hosting panel’s configured home directory. This is why two administrators can look at different Zomboid folders on the same machine and both find valid files.
Windows installations
Log in as the account that starts the dedicated server and open its user profile. The normal root is C:Users<username>Zomboid. If a scheduled task, service wrapper, or panel starts the process under another account, inspect that account’s profile instead. The Steam installation path is useful for locating the server executable, but it is not the authoritative location for the active profile or save.

Resolve ~ for the account that owns the running process. For example, a service running as steam commonly uses /home/steam/Zomboid. A root shell’s ~/Zomboid would instead mean /root/Zomboid, which is usually the wrong place for a server started as steam. Containers add another layer: the visible path inside the container can map to a host volume, so check the container’s volume configuration when the expected directory is absent.
Practical path checks
On Windows, open the suspected account’s home folder and look for a Zomboid directory containing Server and Saves. In PowerShell, $env:USERPROFILE shows the current account’s home path; append Zomboid to inspect the expected root.

On Linux, printf '%sn' "$HOME/Zomboid" prints the current shell’s expected location. If that account has no folder, inspect the service definition or launch script for the user it specifies, then check that user’s home directory. Searching every home directory as an administrator can find files, but the process owner and any configured container volume remain the authority.
What is inside Zomboid/Server
Dedicated-server profiles are collections of files sharing one profile name. The familiar example is servertest, but a production server may use a different name. Replace the example consistently in every path and command.
<profile>.ini
The INI file contains server behavior and connection/server options. It is the place to inspect settings such as the server’s operational options, rather than world-generation rules. If the launch command loads myserver, the relevant file is myserver.ini, not servertest.ini.
<profile>_SandboxVars.lua
This Lua file holds world rules, including loot, zombie settings, time, water shutoff, and player-versus-player behavior. Its name must match the profile prefix exactly. Editing a SandboxVars file belonging to another profile will not alter the world that the process starts.

Spawn files
When present, <profile>_spawnpoints.lua and <profile>_spawnregions.lua define spawn configuration. They are separate from both the INI and SandboxVars files, so include them in a backup when the server uses custom spawn locations or regions.
Build-specific profile files
Some builds include additional files such as <profile>_Zombies.ini. File sets can change between branches and builds. Treat the files belonging to the active profile and current branch as authoritative; do not delete an unfamiliar profile file merely because it is not present in another installation.

Where the multiplayer world save is stored
The persistent dedicated multiplayer world is under Zomboid/Saves/Multiplayer/<server>. The directory name identifies the server world, while the profile files in Zomboid/Server describe the settings used to create and run it. A world directory without its matching profile is not a complete, reliable restore.
Keep the save and the profile together when copying between machines. The required profile set normally includes the matching INI, SandboxVars, spawn files when present, and any build-specific files used by that profile. If the server uses mods, preserve its Workshop and Mods identifiers as well; those settings are separate from the world directory and are not embedded as a replacement for the profile configuration.

Hosted and in-game multiplayer state
A listen or in-game host can create profile-specific and explored-map data in addition to the dedicated-server layout. Build 42 tooling documents map_visited_server under the save and client-side <profile>_player data. Therefore, do not assume every multiplayer artifact is represented by one file or that copying only a visible map folder captures all explored-state information.

Why editing a Zomboid config appears to do nothing
You opened the wrong account’s folder
The most common cause is looking under the administrator’s home directory while the service runs as another account. Confirm the process owner and inspect that user’s Zomboid root. On Linux this distinction is especially common with a steam service account; on Windows it can occur with a scheduled task or service identity.
You edited the wrong profile
Find the profile name in the server launch command or service configuration. For a profile named servertest, the expected files are servertest.ini and servertest_SandboxVars.lua. If the command loads survival, changes to servertest_SandboxVars.lua are unrelated to the running world. Apply the same profile prefix to every companion file.
You confused installation files with user data
Steam or SteamCMD may contain the dedicated-server executable and application files, while the live INI, Lua settings, and save remain under the account’s Zomboid directory. Use the executable location to identify the installed build, not as a substitute for the data root.

A container or panel maps storage elsewhere
When the expected host path is empty, check the container volume or hosting panel’s persistent-storage setting. The path visible inside a container may not be the path visible on the host. Preserve the mapped volume that contains Server and Saves/Multiplayer, not only the image or application directory.
The files are not paired
A copied world can appear present yet fail to reproduce the original behavior when its profile files are missing or from another server. Restore the save with the INI, SandboxVars, spawn files, build-specific files, and relevant mod identifiers that belong to it.

Use this sequence for a manual backup, a move to another machine, or a recovery test.
- Stop the server cleanly. Wait until the process exits before copying files. This prevents a live process from changing the world while the backup is being made.
- Confirm the active profile. Read the launch command or service configuration and record the exact profile name it loads.
- Copy the world directory. Back up
Zomboid/Saves/Multiplayer/<server>, preserving its complete directory structure. - Copy the matching profile files. Include
Zomboid/Server/<profile>.ini,<profile>_SandboxVars.lua, spawn files, and any build-specific files used by that profile. - Preserve mod configuration. Record the Workshop and Mods identifiers when the server uses mods. They are separate settings and must accompany the world and profile during a move.
- Test the restore. When possible, restore to a test profile first, start the server, and verify that a client can join and that the expected world is loaded before replacing the production copy.
Dedicated server versus an in-game host
The folder names can overlap, but the operating model differs. Use these distinctions when deciding what to copy or where to look.

Recovery checklist when a save or setting is missing
- Check the account that launched the process, not only the account you normally use to administer the machine.
- Verify that the data root contains both
ServerandSaves/Multiplayer; an executable-only directory is not enough. - Match the profile prefix in the launch command, INI, SandboxVars, spawn files, and save backup.
- Look for a container volume or hosting-panel mapping if the host filesystem does not contain the expected tree.
- For a missing world, inspect the exact
Saves/Multiplayer/<server>directory name and confirm that the backup was taken after a clean shutdown. - For a Build 42 hosted or in-game save, account for
map_visited_serverand client-side<profile>_playerdata instead of searching for one universal save file. - Restore a copy to a test profile before touching the live world, then verify a client connection and the expected map.
