Water on the Moon is real, but it is not one continuous reservoir. The strongest evidence points to water ice trapped in permanently shadowed craters near both poles. Scientists have also detected small amounts of molecular water (H2O) in sunlit soil, including at Clavius Crater, and broader hydration signatures that may contain hydroxyl (OH), water, or hydrated minerals.

Those findings establish different kinds of lunar water evidence, not a measured global reserve. The observations do not show lakes, rivers, or stable pools of liquid water, and they do not yet prove that every detected deposit is reachable or economically extractable.

The three forms of lunar water evidence

“Water on the Moon” can mean several chemically and physically different things. Keeping those categories separate prevents a hydrogen signal from being mistaken for an accessible ice deposit.

Evidence category Where it is found What the measurement shows What it does not establish
Water ice Permanently shadowed regions (PSRs) in polar craters Hydrogen enhancements, impact-ejecta detections and orbital observations consistent with trapped ice A continuous sheet, known deposit thickness, or easy access
Molecular water, H2O Sunlit soil, notably at Clavius Crater A local concentration of 100–412 parts per million in the observed material A Moon-wide average or a ready-to-mine supply
Hydroxyl and hydrated material Broad areas of sunlit lunar surface Spectral signatures containing hydrogen and oxygen chemistry That all of the signal is free H2O or ice

NASA’s summaries describe these as complementary observations. Polar measurements concern volatile trapping in cold, dark terrain; the Clavius result concerns dilute molecules in illuminated soil; and older hydration measurements often could not distinguish OH from H2O.

Where lunar ice is most likely: permanently shadowed polar craters

The clearest setting for lunar ice is a permanently shadowed region near the north or south pole. Because of the Moon’s geometry, some crater floors and steep interior slopes never receive direct sunlight. They remain extremely cold, allowing water and other volatile compounds to persist instead of repeatedly sublimating into space.

Why the poles can preserve ice

Sunlit lunar ground experiences a much harsher thermal cycle than Earth’s surface. In a permanently shadowed crater, however, the absence of direct sunlight creates a long-lived cold trap. If water molecules arrive there or migrate there, they can freeze onto grains, become mixed through the regolith, or accumulate in localized deposits. “Cold trap” describes the physical environment; it does not imply a visible glacier or a uniform layer that can be scooped up everywhere.

How scientists identified polar water

  • Lunar Prospector neutron measurements: An excess of hydrogen at both poles indicated significant hydrogen-bearing material in permanently shadowed craters. Because water contains hydrogen, the result was consistent with trapped water ice, although a neutron measurement does not by itself identify the exact chemical form or deposit structure.
  • LCROSS impact ejecta: NASA’s deliberate impact into a shadowed polar crater released a plume containing water and other volatiles. Detecting material in the ejecta provided direct evidence that water-bearing compounds exist in a permanently dark environment.
  • Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter observations: Orbital measurements added support for ice in polar cold traps and helped characterize the terrain in which it may occur.

Taken together, these observations make polar PSRs the strongest broad location for lunar ice evidence. They still do not provide a complete map of deposit depth, purity, grain size, or local accessibility. A crater can contain water-bearing material while presenting difficult slopes, rough ground, severe darkness and communications constraints to a future spacecraft.

Molecular water in sunlit soil at Clavius Crater

In 2020, NASA reported that the SOFIA airborne observatory detected molecular H2O at Clavius Crater, a large impact crater in the Moon’s southern hemisphere. The reported concentration was 100 to 412 parts per million in the observed soil.

That range is a local remote-sensing result, not a global lunar average. NASA used an everyday comparison: the measured concentration is roughly equivalent to a 12-ounce bottle of water trapped in a cubic meter of soil. The analogy communicates how dilute the signal is; it is not an estimate that a bottle-sized quantity can be collected from every cubic meter or extracted with current equipment.

Why the Clavius result changed the picture

Before the SOFIA observation, scientists already had evidence of hydrogen and oxygen chemistry across illuminated lunar surfaces. The Clavius detection was important because it identified the spectral signature of H2O itself rather than only a broad hydration feature. It showed that water molecules can survive in sunlit regolith, outside the permanently shadowed traps that dominate discussions of lunar ice.

The result does not mean that the sunlit Moon has liquid water. The molecules are present at very low concentration, bound or retained within soil grains under lunar surface conditions. Their abundance, depth distribution and ability to move between grains are separate questions.

Hydroxyl and other hydration signatures

Several earlier missions, including Chandrayaan-1, detected a broad absorption feature associated with hydrogen and oxygen on sunlit lunar terrain. NASA explains that those measurements could not always distinguish hydroxyl (OH) from molecular water (H2O), or from hydrated material in which water-related chemistry is incorporated into minerals.

OH is related to water but is not water

A hydroxyl group contains one oxygen and one hydrogen atom. A water molecule contains two hydrogen atoms bonded to one oxygen atom. Both can produce related spectral signals, but they behave differently chemically and have different implications for extraction. Therefore, calling every hydration detection “water ice” overstates what the instrument measured.

A proposed surface-formation process

One proposed mechanism begins with hydrogen carried by the solar wind. When that hydrogen interacts with oxygen in lunar minerals, it may produce hydroxyl and some water molecules in the uppermost soil. This process could help explain why hydration signatures occur across sunlit regions. NASA presents it as a possible contributor, not a complete, settled explanation for every lunar water observation.

How the evidence is collected

No single instrument answers every question about lunar water. Scientists combine measurements that respond to different properties.

Method Primary signal Useful for Main limitation
Neutron spectroscopy Changes in emitted neutrons caused by hydrogen Mapping broad hydrogen enhancements, especially near the poles Hydrogen detection does not uniquely specify water, depth or concentration
Impact-ejecta analysis Material excavated from below the surface Sampling volatiles in a permanently shadowed crater Represents the impact site and ejecta plume, not every part of the crater
Infrared and other spectroscopy Absorption features associated with H2O, OH or hydrated compounds Identifying chemical signatures in sunlit soil and comparing locations Signals can overlap; concentration and physical form require interpretation
High-resolution orbital imaging and thermal mapping Terrain, illumination and surface temperature patterns Locating cold traps and planning potential landing or sampling sites Terrain maps do not by themselves prove the amount or purity of ice

The distinction between detection and characterization is central. A map can show where a signal is strongest while leaving unanswered whether the material is a thin coating, dispersed grains, a buried layer or a mixture of several compounds.

How water is distributed near the south pole

NASA’s mapping work near the south pole found higher water concentrations on shadowed sides of craters and mountains. The pattern resembles the way shaded slopes on Earth can retain snow longer, but the comparison is only an analogy for illumination and retention. It is not evidence of terrestrial-style snowfall or a lunar snowpack.

Distribution is likely patchy. A permanently shadowed floor may contain more water-bearing material than a nearby sunlit rim, while different slopes in the same crater can have different temperatures and exposure histories. The available observations support this qualitative pattern, but they do not establish a single Moon-wide concentration or a complete three-dimensional inventory.

Where did lunar water come from?

Scientists are considering several sources and transport pathways, and the evidence does not yet select one final explanation.

Solar-wind chemistry

Hydrogen ions in the solar wind can interact with oxygen in surface minerals, potentially forming hydroxyl and water. Newly formed molecules may remain attached to grains, migrate across the surface or become trapped in colder terrain.

Asteroids and comets

Impacts by water-bearing asteroids or comets could have delivered some lunar volatiles. An impact can also vaporize and redistribute material, allowing molecules to move before freezing in a cold trap.

Ancient retained material

Some water may have been present for long periods, preserved in especially cold regions. Whether particular deposits are ancient, recently delivered or repeatedly recycled is not established by the cited observations.

Migration across the surface

Water molecules can be released from grains by sunlight or impacts and then hop across the surface. Colder terrain is more likely to retain them, which could help concentrate volatiles in polar traps. NASA identifies the origin and migration history as open questions rather than settled conclusions.

Is there liquid water on the Moon?

The evidence summarized here does not show stable lakes, streams or open pools of liquid water. It concerns solid ice in permanently shadowed terrain, dilute molecular H2O in sunlit soil, and hydroxyl or hydrated compounds detected spectroscopically.

Liquid water is difficult to maintain on the exposed lunar surface because the Moon has virtually no atmosphere and experiences extreme temperature and vacuum conditions. A molecule released from soil can freeze in a cold trap, bind to a mineral, or escape; the observations do not describe a persistent surface liquid reservoir.

Does lunar water amount to a usable resource?

Not yet, based on these detections alone. A resource assessment would need much more than proof that water-related material exists.

  • Abundance: How many kilograms of water occur in a defined volume and area?
  • Depth: Is the material at the surface, mixed through regolith or buried beneath a dry layer?
  • Physical form: Is it loose ice, frost, chemically bound water, hydroxyl or a mixture?
  • Accessibility: Can a rover or lander reach the site safely, operate in darkness and communicate reliably?
  • Extraction energy: How much heating, drilling or processing would be required to release the water?
  • Purity and handling: What other volatiles or contaminants would be collected with it?

The 100–412 ppm Clavius measurement illustrates the issue: it confirms local molecular water but is dilute. Polar ice evidence is more promising for concentration, yet the cited studies do not establish mineable thickness or an economically recoverable reserve. “Detected” and “available for use” are therefore different claims.

Common misconceptions to avoid

Misconception More accurate description
“The Moon has oceans or lakes.” Evidence concerns ice in polar cold traps and water-related molecules or compounds in soil.
“Every hydrogen signal is water.” Hydrogen measurements can indicate water-bearing material but do not uniquely identify H2O.
“All lunar hydration is water ice.” Hydration signatures may represent OH, H2O or hydrated minerals.
“The Clavius result is the Moon’s average water content.” It is a local SOFIA measurement of 100–412 ppm in observed soil.
“A polar ice map proves easy mining.” Maps show evidence and terrain; they do not prove deposit thickness, purity, access or economic recovery.

What remains unknown

Researchers still need better measurements of how much water exists, how deeply it is buried, how uniformly it is distributed and how quickly it moves. The chemical split among ice, molecular H2O, hydroxyl and other hydrated compounds also needs site-by-site verification. Future landed instruments and sample-return missions could test remote observations directly, but the present evidence already supports a clear conclusion about location and form.

The practical answer

If you ask where water is on the Moon, start with the permanently shadowed craters near both poles: they are the strongest evidence for trapped water ice. Then add a second, distinct finding: sunlit soil, including Clavius Crater, contains small amounts of molecular H2O. Finally, remember that broad lunar hydration signatures may be hydroxyl or mineral-bound water rather than free ice. These are real but different reservoirs, and none should be converted into a precise global supply or guaranteed resource without measurements that establish quantity and accessibility.
