On most Samsung phones, the proximity sensor is in the top area of the phone, but its exact position and design depend on the model. It may sit beneath the display, so you may not see a separate dot or opening. Check your phone’s model-specific manual or Samsung support page for its precise location.
What the proximity sensor does
During a call through the earpiece, the sensor detects when the phone is close to your face and turns off the display or touch input. This helps prevent accidental taps while you are talking. Samsung describes conventional proximity sensing as using infrared light that is emitted and received near the top of the phone.
Where to look on your Samsung phone
Start with the top/front area, but do not assume the sensor is a visible dot or hole. Placement varies by model, and on some newer Galaxy phones the sensor is under the display. Samsung identifies internal placement in the upper part of the display for the Galaxy S21 series; its explanation for the latest Galaxy phones also describes under-display placement. These are model-specific examples, not a universal map.
Some models may not use a conventional, separate proximity sensor. Samsung Korea’s 2020 support guidance describes the Galaxy S20 FE SM-G781N as using virtual sensing: touchscreen, motion, and light-sensor information help the phone infer whether it is near the face. Recognition can depend on how the phone is held and the user’s conditions.

For your exact handset, look up the model name or number in its manual or on Samsung’s support site rather than trying to identify a sensor by sight.
When the display should turn off during a call
Proximity-based screen-off behavior is intended for calls using the earpiece. Samsung’s Malaysia guidance says the behavior is deactivated when you use speakerphone or Bluetooth earphones. If the screen stays on in either mode, that alone does not show that the sensor is faulty.

What to do if the screen behaves unexpectedly
- Clean the top/front gently. Wipe it with a soft, lint-free cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals.
- Check for obstructions. Temporarily remove the case, screen protector, film, or sticker, then retry an earpiece call. An accessory that covers or interferes with the sensing area may affect recognition.
- Check for software updates and run a diagnostic. In Samsung Members, the route may appear as Service Center > Phone diagnostics > Proximity sensor or Get help > View tests > Proximity recognition. Samsung uses different wording across regions, models, and software versions; if neither route appears, consult the support information for your device.
- Restart the phone and test again. If the issue persists after cleaning and removing accessories, contact Samsung support or seek a service evaluation for your model.
Can you turn the proximity sensor off?
Do not expect a universal sensor on/off switch. Samsung Korea’s 2020 guidance says proximity sensing on models after the Galaxy S5 series is not controlled by an on/off setting and operates automatically during calls. That older, regional guidance does not establish the settings available on every current model, so check your device’s software and model-specific support information.
