On a network-connected printer, check its Network, Wireless, or Connectivity screen and look for “IP Address.” If the printer has no usable display, check its manufacturer app if it shows network details, or print a network configuration, information, or status report. The exact menu names and report-printing steps depend on the model.
Find the address on the printer
- Confirm the connection. Make sure the printer is connected to the Wi-Fi or wired network whose address you need. If it is offline or has not joined an IP network, it may not have a useful local network address to show. HP notes that a printer must be connected to a network before you can obtain its IP address.
- Open the network information screen. On the printer’s control panel, look under Network, Wireless, Ethernet, or Connectivity for network details. The labels and navigation differ by model; HP support describes Network and Connectivity/Info menu examples, while Brother provides separate wired and wireless paths for the models covered in its instructions. See HP’s model-family guidance and Brother’s instructions for the listed printer family.
- Read the active connection’s IP Address field. If the printer reports both Ethernet and wireless details, use the address for the connection it is currently using. A direct connection such as Wi-Fi Direct may have a different address from the printer’s address on your home or office LAN.
If the printer has no convenient display
Check the manufacturer app
Some manufacturer apps show network information for supported printers. For example, HP says its app can display Network Information. App support and the available details vary by printer model.
Print a network report
Use the printer’s menu or model-specific support instructions to print a network configuration, information, or status report. Find the field labelled “IP Address.” Manufacturers do not use one universal name for this report: HP refers to network configuration information, Brother documents a network configuration report, and Epson describes a network status sheet or connection report. See HP, Brother, and Epson for examples. Because button sequences are model-specific, consult the manual or official support page for your exact model if the printer’s menus do not make the report option clear.
Choose the lookup method that fits
| Method | Best when | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Printer control panel | The printer has a display and is connected to the network. | Network, Wireless, Ethernet, or Connectivity information; identify the active interface. |
| Manufacturer app | The printer has no convenient display and its supported app exposes network information. | Look for Network Information or a similar network-details screen; availability varies by model. |
| Printed network report | The menu is unclear, or you also need connection-status details. | Print the model’s configuration, information, or status report and locate “IP Address.” The report name and steps vary. |
When the IP address is missing or unexpected
Start by checking whether the printer joined the intended network. Its network status screen or printed connection report can help distinguish a failed connection from a simple menu or interface mix-up. Brother identifies an all-zero address, a 169.254.x.x address on a router/access-point network, or an address outside the local network’s range as possible warning signs. These are clues, not a universal diagnosis; Epson also recommends checking the network status sheet or connection report and verifying cable and network settings.

- UPC: 198828789662
- Weight: 10.450 lbs
Do not assume that a familiar-looking home network range is required. Router settings and network design determine the local range, and manufacturer examples are illustrative rather than rules. If the printer shows more than one address, verify whether each belongs to Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or a separate direct connection before using it.
What you can do with the printer’s network IP
The IP address identifies the printer on an IP network. On supported HP printers, entering the network address in a web browser opens the Embedded Web Server, which can provide printer information or settings; availability and behavior depend on the printer model and connection. HP describes this use of the Embedded Web Server.
