Gemini Spark has not been confirmed as renamed or retired. Some Gemini web users are reportedly seeing a “Chat or Task” choice beneath the main prompt, with task threads and schedules in the regular sidebar, but Google’s announcements and Help updates reviewed here do not confirm that interface change or explain whether Spark’s name is changing.

What the reported Gemini change does—and does not—confirm

The reported interface puts task controls alongside Gemini’s usual chat experience. That could make agent-style tasks feel more integrated into the main app, but it is not evidence by itself that Spark has disappeared. The report’s scope, release date and final rollout are not established, and Google has not confirmed that the “Chat or Task” wording is a universal change.

Google announced Gemini Spark on May 19, 2026, describing it as a personal AI agent within the Gemini app. Josh Woodward, Google’s VP of Google Labs, Gemini app and AI Studio, called it “a 24/7 personal AI agent designed to proactively manage tasks and help you navigate your digital life, all under your direction.” That is Google’s description of the product, not an independent assessment of its performance.

In that same May announcement, Google said it was redesigning Gemini with its Neural Expressive design language and integrating Gemini Live into the app. Those broader changes do not establish that the later-reported task controls are part of the redesign, or that Spark has been folded into chat under a new name.

What Google has announced about Spark

Google’s dated announcements describe Spark across several surfaces and capabilities. They establish the company’s stated plans and rollouts at those dates, not present-day availability for every account.

Date What Google said What it means for access
May 19, 2026 Google introduced Spark as a personal agent in the Gemini app and announced a wider Gemini redesign. The announcement establishes Spark’s place in Gemini at that time, but does not confirm the reported “Chat or Task” control.
June 30, 2026 Google described a macOS beta and connections with Google Tasks, Google Keep, Canva, Dropbox, Instacart, OpenTable and Zillow Rentals. It said Spark on Mac could work with user-permitted local files and Google Workspace. Features and integrations may depend on platform, permission and account eligibility. Google described assigning tasks remotely from a phone as a coming capability at that time; consult its later Help updates for subsequent changes.
July 30, 2026 Google announced Chrome auto-browse capabilities for web errands. It said Spark could use logged-in accounts and saved passwords with permission, and hand control back for sensitive steps such as payments. Google said those browsing capabilities were initially rolling out in the United States. That dated statement does not guarantee availability now or for every US account.

Google also said on July 30 that Google AI Pro access was expanding to more than 160 additional countries. Country, language, plan and rollout timing can all affect what appears in Gemini.

How to check whether Spark or task features are available to you

Because the reported interface is not officially confirmed, there is no verified universal setting or menu path to turn on “Chat or Task.” Check the Gemini experience you actually use and distinguish a missing feature from a name change:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Gemini in the relevant place. Check the web app, mobile app or macOS beta you use. Spark-related features described by Google are not necessarily available across all platforms at once.
  2. Look for task-related controls and threads. If your web account shows “Chat or Task,” task threads or schedules, treat those as the interface available to that account—not proof that all users have received a redesign or that Spark has been retired.
  3. Check account eligibility. Verify your current plan, country and language against Gemini’s in-app availability. Google’s Help change log records dated rollout qualifications; for example, its July 16, 2026 entry said Ultra support was rolling out wherever Gemini Apps were supported except the European Economic Area, Nigeria, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. The same entry said US Pro access was rolling out in English. These are dated qualifications, not guarantees of current eligibility.
  4. Review permissions before assigning work. Google says Mac file access depends on user permission, and its Chrome auto-browse announcement described use of logged-in accounts and saved passwords with permission. Google said control returns to the user for sensitive actions such as payments.

What the available evidence cannot settle

Google’s Help change log records Spark expansions and feature changes in June and July 2026, but the reviewed official materials do not establish that the reported web controls are a formal rename, a complete integration, or a shutdown of Spark. They also do not establish a universal release date or rollout scope. If you do not see task controls, that alone does not show that Spark is gone; if you do see them, it does not show that Spark’s name has been dropped.

For context on the scale of Gemini, Google said in its May 19, 2026 announcement that the service had more than 900 million monthly users across 230 countries and more than 70 languages. Those are Google-published figures, not independently verified here, and they do not indicate how widely any particular Spark interface has rolled out.
