Denisovan-related ancestry is strongest in Papuan and other Oceanian and Melanesian populations, with especially high estimates in sampled Philippine Aeta/Ayta groups. Smaller but statistically detectable signals appear across many sampled South, East and Southeast Asian populations. These are population-level estimates, not a percentage that can be assigned to every person in a group.
The short answer: Oceania has the strongest signal
Genomic studies consistently place the largest present-day Denisovan-related signal in populations connected with New Guinea and nearby Oceania. Papuan and Melanesian groups show the clearest and largest estimates in the studies considered here. GenomeAsia also reports high estimates in its sampled Philippine Aeta (also spelled Ayta) populations. Signals are lower, but still statistically detectable, in many sampled populations from South Asia, East Asia and Southeast Asia.
That geographic pattern does not mean Denisovans were a recent, uniform population spread across a modern political region. “Denisovan DNA” is shorthand for DNA segments or allele-sharing patterns in living people that are unusually similar to one or more available Denisovan-related ancient genomes. The result depends on which ancient reference genome, modern comparison groups and statistical method a study uses.

Where studies report Denisovan-related ancestry

What the major studies actually measured
Sankararaman et al., 2016: a broad comparison of modern genomes
One influential analysis examined 257 high-coverage genomes drawn from 120 diverse non-African populations. It estimated 1.12% Denisovan ancestry for Papuans and 0.10% for Sherpas. The authors’ comparison was designed to detect archaic introgression by looking for patterns of genetic sharing that fit inheritance from a Denisovan-related population.
Those numbers are useful for showing the scale of the difference between the two sampled groups, but they should not be combined mechanically with later estimates. “High coverage” describes the amount and quality of sequence data available for the genomes in that study; it does not remove uncertainty about which Denisovan lineage contributed the DNA or how the statistical model defines an introgressed segment.
GenomeAsia 100K Project, 2019: a regional gradient
GenomeAsia compared many Asian populations and reported a broad gradient. Its highest estimates were in Melanesian samples and in the Aeta. Ati and groups from Flores showed intermediate estimates. Most sampled South, East and Southeast Asian populations had lower estimates that were nevertheless significantly above zero under the project’s analysis.
The project also reported high estimates in Philippine Negrito groups but not in the Malay or Andaman Negrito groups it examined. That contrast is important: a shared geographic description or historical label does not guarantee a shared Denisovan-related ancestry level.

GenomeAsia presented evidence consistent with two separate admixture events involving ancestors of Aeta and Papuan-related populations. Aeta-specific putative Denisovan haplotypes were longer on average than haplotypes shared with Papuans or unique to Papuans. Longer inherited blocks can indicate a more recent admixture event because recombination has had less time to break them apart. This remains an inference from genetic patterns, not a direct record of a historical meeting.
Cox and colleagues, 2026: multiple deeply divergent lineages
A 2026 study analyzed 161 newly sequenced genomes from 14 island groups across Island Southeast Asia and New Guinea. Its conclusion estimated around 4% Denisovan-derived contribution to Papuan genomes and identified two deeply divergent Denisovan-related lineages in Papuans. It also detected a distinct lineage signal in East Asians and Siberians.
The study’s demographic interpretation is that the two Papuan lineages diverged from the Altai Denisovan clade hundreds of thousands of years ago. One of those signals appears largely restricted to New Guinea and nearby islands in the regional sample. These findings complicate the idea that “Denisovan ancestry” is one homogeneous component inherited from a single archaic population.

The 2026 estimate is not a correction that makes the 2016 estimate wrong. Different reference genomes, ancestry definitions, sampled populations and detection procedures can produce different percentages. Both figures must remain attached to the study that produced them.

Why the signal is strongest in Papuan and Melanesian populations
The genomic pattern is consistent with admixture between Denisovan-related populations and the ancestors of people who later lived in New Guinea, Australia and parts of Island Southeast Asia. Once inherited, archaic segments were passed through later generations, shortened by recombination and distributed unevenly as populations moved, mixed and separated.
New Guinea and Melanesia preserve particularly strong signals in the modern samples used by these studies. The evidence does not require that Denisovans lived only in Oceania. Instead, it indicates that one or more contacts left a larger surviving genetic contribution in the ancestors of Papuan and related populations than in many other sampled groups.
The 2011 analysis cited in the evidence found gene flow into the ancestors of New Guineans, Australians and Mamanwa. It did not detect the same signal in the sampled Jehai and Onge. This is an historical result for those particular samples, not a rule that divides every present-day population in the region into “with” and “without” Denisovan ancestry.

How researchers identify Denisovan-related DNA
Researchers cannot normally look at a modern genome and read a label saying “Denisovan.” They infer ancestry by comparing modern genetic variation with sequenced archaic genomes and with genomes from other living populations.

- Sequence modern genomes. A study obtains genome-wide data from people in selected populations. Coverage and error rates affect how confidently rare variants and long segments can be identified.
- Choose ancient references. Researchers compare the modern data with available Denisovan-related genomes, including the Altai Denisovan reference and, where possible, other archaic material. A reference can detect some lineages better than others.
- Test allele sharing and segments. Statistical models look for clusters of variants or haplotypes that are unusually close to an archaic reference and that occur in a geographic pattern compatible with inheritance.
- Separate introgression from older shared variation. Long haplotypes, the length distribution of segments and comparisons with other archaic and modern genomes help distinguish gene flow from genetic variation inherited before human populations diverged.
- Estimate ancestry under a model. The result is a proportion for the sampled genomes under that study’s operational definition of Denisovan-related ancestry. It is not a direct count of every base that can be historically assigned to a named Denisovan individual.
Ancient genomes are incomplete, and many Denisovan-related populations have no directly sequenced representative. Consequently, a study may detect ancestry related to a known reference while missing contributions from a deeply divergent lineage. The 2026 findings of multiple lineages illustrate why a single percentage cannot capture the entire history.
Do people in Asia have Denisovan ancestry?
Some do, according to population-level genomic studies, but the amount varies widely among sampled groups. GenomeAsia found lower but statistically detectable signals in most of its sampled South, East and Southeast Asian populations, with higher estimates in particular Philippine and Melanesian groups. The presence of a small signal in a population does not establish that every individual carries it, nor does it identify a common recent ancestor.
East Asian populations are especially relevant to the newer lineage research. The 2026 study reported a Denisovan-related lineage signal in East Asians and Siberians that was distinct from the two major Papuan signals it described. That result supports a more complex history of contact and dispersal than a simple Oceania-versus-Asia divide.

What a population percentage can—and cannot—tell you
What it can show
- It can estimate the average or modeled contribution in a defined research sample.
- It can reveal that an archaic-contact event affected the ancestors of a population.
- It can help compare broad patterns when the studies use compatible methods and references.
- It can provide clues about timing, such as whether longer haplotypes are consistent with a more recent admixture event.
What it cannot show
- It cannot assign the same percentage to every person who shares a population label.
- It cannot prove that a person has a Denisovan ancestor within a genealogical timeframe that can be named.
- It cannot identify which ancient Denisovan population contributed a particular segment unless the available data support that distinction.
- It cannot turn a modern nationality, language, ethnicity or place of residence into a genetic diagnosis.
Two people from the same population may inherit different archaic segments, and some may inherit little or none detectable by a particular test. A population average is therefore a statement about the sampled genomes and model, not a personal result.

Why published percentages do not line up
Several technical differences explain why one paper may report 1.12%, another around 4% and a third a much smaller value for an Asian population:
- Reference choice: a model based on one Denisovan genome may miss segments from another divergent lineage.
- Definition of ancestry: studies set different thresholds for deciding whether a shared segment is archaic introgression.
- Population sample: a regional name can cover many genetically distinct groups. A study of one island or community cannot represent every neighbor.
- Sequence quality: high-coverage genomes provide more information than sparse or error-prone data, especially for short or rare segments.
- Statistical framework: allele-sharing tests, haplotype-based methods and demographic models answer related but not identical questions.
- Lineage complexity: deeply diverged Denisovan-related populations may be detected unevenly, changing the estimated total.
For these reasons, the figures in the table should be read as study-specific estimates rather than a universal league table of human populations.
Can a consumer DNA test tell you your Denisovan percentage?
The evidence reviewed here does not establish that consumer ancestry tests can reliably answer an individual’s Denisovan-ancestry question. The cited studies used research-grade comparisons, selected reference genomes and population-level statistical analyses. A commercial report may use different databases, omit Denisovan-related references or provide no validated individual-level estimate.
If you encounter a personal percentage online, check whether it identifies the reference genome, method, uncertainty range, population comparison and date of analysis. Without those details, the number cannot be compared fairly with the 2016, 2019 or 2026 study estimates.
Bottom line
The strongest present-day Denisovan-related signal is in sampled Papuan, Melanesian and some Philippine Aeta/Ayta populations. Lower signals have been detected across many South, East and Southeast Asian populations, and newer work indicates that several deeply divergent Denisovan-related lineages contributed to different modern groups. The percentages describe particular samples and analytical models; they are not a fixed trait of everyone in a region and do not, by themselves, answer whether any individual carries Denisovan DNA.
