Download the current Microsoft Teams desktop app from Microsoft’s official Download Teams Desktop and Mobile Apps page. For Windows, choose Download Microsoft Teams for Windows. For macOS, choose Download Teams for Mac.
The current app is not split into separate desktop downloads for work, school, and personal accounts. Microsoft’s new Teams app supports all three account types and lets you switch between accounts without signing out and back in.

For the safest download, start at Microsoft’s download page rather than using a third-party download site. Microsoft’s public page does not show a human-readable desktop version number. The current Windows and Mac download files are named MSTeamsSetup.exe and MicrosoftTeams.pkg.
How to download and install Teams on Windows
- Open the official Microsoft Teams download page.
- Click Download Microsoft Teams for Windows.
- When the download finishes, open
MSTeamsSetup.exefrom your browser’s Downloads list or the Windows Downloads folder. - Approve the Windows security prompt if one appears and follow the installer’s instructions.
- Open Microsoft Teams from the Windows Start menu.
- Sign in with your work or school account. If you also use Teams personally, add or switch to that account inside the same app.
If the installer does not start, confirm that the file finished downloading and that you opened the current MSTeamsSetup.exe, not an old Teams shortcut or a previously downloaded installer. On a managed work or school computer, an administrator may restrict software installation; contact your IT department if Windows blocks the installation.

How to download and install Teams on a Mac
- Open Microsoft’s Teams download page.
- Select Download Teams for Mac.
- Open
MicrosoftTeams.pkgwhen the download completes. - Work through the macOS installer and enter an administrator password if macOS requests one.
- Open Teams from Applications or Spotlight.
- Sign in with your work or school credentials.
If macOS reports that the package cannot be opened, download it again from Microsoft’s page. If a security policy prevents the installation, the Mac may be managed by your employer or school and require administrator approval.
Can you download Teams for a school account?
Yes. Use the same current desktop download as someone with a business account. The Windows and Mac buttons do not provide a separate “Teams for school” installer. After installation, sign in with the account issued by your school.
The installer does not grant access to paid or organization-specific features by itself. What you can use depends on your school’s Microsoft 365 subscription, account permissions, and Teams policies. If your school gave you a Microsoft 365 username, use that account rather than creating a new personal Microsoft account.

Can you use work, school, and personal Teams accounts in one app?
Microsoft says the new Teams app supports work, school, and personal accounts in one application. You can switch between accounts without signing out and signing in again each time.
After opening Teams, select your profile picture or account control near the top of the window and choose the account or organization you need. If the account is not listed, use the option to add another account and complete its sign-in process. Organization policies can still affect which teams, chats, files, and meetings are visible.
Linux: use the Teams progressive web app
Microsoft’s current download page does not offer a native Linux desktop installer. Instead, it provides an option to get the Microsoft Teams progressive web app on Linux.

A progressive web app runs Teams through the browser but can provide an app-style window and, depending on the browser and permissions, desktop notifications. Open https://teams.microsoft.com in a supported browser, sign in, and use the browser’s option to install or create an app shortcut if it offers one. The exact menu name varies by browser.

Microsoft explicitly says that installing the Teams app is not required. You can use Teams in a browser at teams.microsoft.com.
The browser option is useful when:
- You are using a computer where you cannot install software.
- You are on a temporary or shared computer.
- Your organization manages desktop installations.
- You only need to join a meeting or check a chat occasionally.
Browser features can vary by browser, device, and organization policy. For regular work or school use, the desktop app or Linux progressive web app may be more convenient, but neither is mandatory.

What happened to the classic Teams desktop app?
Microsoft says the classic Teams app is being replaced by the new Teams app. It is therefore not the current recommended download, even though older articles and search results may still describe a separate “classic Teams for work or school” installer.
If classic Teams is already installed, Microsoft says you can move to the new app using the in-app toggle that appears at the top of the screen, or by downloading and installing the new Teams app from Microsoft’s current download page. Avoid relying on an old installer link copied from an outdated guide.

Is there a separate Teams app for work or school?
Not as a separate current desktop download on Microsoft’s page. The new Teams app supports work, school, and personal accounts in one app. Your account and organization license determine which features you can use.
Can I use Teams without downloading it?
Yes. Go to teams.microsoft.com and sign in through your browser. Microsoft says installing the app is not required.
