Browser security is moving toward stronger sign-in and privacy-conscious platform design, but the evidence does not point to one universal fix. WebAuthn passkeys offer a standards-based alternative to passwords; browser fingerprinting remains a risk that can be reduced but not reliably eliminated; and privacy features vary by browser and change over time.
What is changing in browser security?
The clearest documented developments are in authentication and privacy engineering—not a sweeping overhaul that makes every browser secure by default. The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) published Web Authentication (WebAuthn) Level 3 as a Recommendation on 25 August 2026. Its Level 4 specification was still a First Public Working Draft on 15 September 2026, so it is work in progress rather than a final standard.
On the privacy side, standards guidance focuses on reducing unnecessary data exposure and persistent tracking. Browser privacy features also have differing, browser-specific implementation statuses. These developments should not be read as proof that one browser is more secure than another: the available evidence does not rank browsers or establish comparative security outcomes.
How passkeys and WebAuthn change sign-in
WebAuthn is an API that lets a website, known as the relying party, create and use public-key credentials for authentication. Instead of sending a reusable password to the site, the user authenticates with an authenticator, such as a device-based credential or a compatible physical security key. The credential is scoped to the relying party; it is not a universal sign-in token for unrelated sites.

The browser, or user agent, mediates access to the authenticator. The W3C Web Authentication Working Group says this mediation is intended to preserve user privacy, while authenticators are responsible for ensuring operations take place with user consent. A passkey may be stored or made available through different kinds of authenticators; it is not necessarily a physical key.
WebAuthn defines the authentication model, but it does not guarantee that a particular website accepts passkeys, that a particular device can use a given authenticator, or that any specific security-key model will work for a reader. Before changing sign-in methods, check the service’s supported options and the compatibility of the reader’s browser, devices, and authenticator.

Choose an authentication method with recovery in mind
- Check service support. Confirm that the website supports the method you intend to use, including any physical-key option.
- Know where the credential lives. Determine whether it is synchronized across devices or held by a separate physical authenticator.
- Plan for loss or lockout. Review the service’s recovery process and set up an appropriate backup before relying on a single device or key.
- Consider portability. Check that the method fits the devices you use and how you expect to move between them.
Why browser fingerprinting remains a privacy risk
Fingerprinting identifies or re-identifies a person, browser, or device by combining configuration settings and other observable characteristics. A site or tracker can use those characteristics to correlate activity across visits or sessions, sometimes without the transparency or control people expect.

That is why clearing cookies or using a VPN does not necessarily stop fingerprint-based correlation: those actions do not necessarily change the other observable characteristics used to form a fingerprint. Fingerprinting is not the same as a cookie, and addressing one does not automatically address the other.

The W3C Privacy Working Group’s guidance says that completely eliminating fingerprinting through widely deployed technical measures is implausible when facing a determined adversary. Its practical direction is mitigation, not a promise of invisibility.
How privacy-by-design can reduce tracking surface
W3C Privacy Working Group guidance recommends that browser and web-platform designers limit unnecessary fingerprinting opportunities. That means exposing only the features and level of detail needed for a function, avoiding unnecessary increases in data entropy, and allowing privacy-conscious implementations to degrade gracefully when a feature is unavailable. The guidance also points to server opt-in in appropriate cases and avoiding unnecessary or persistent local state.

This guidance is a Group Note, not a formal W3C Standard, and is not endorsed by W3C itself or its Members. W3C’s Privacy Principles became a W3C Statement in May 2025. That statement is informative rather than a formal technical standard, though W3C reports that it received formal review and endorsement by W3C Members. Together, these materials frame privacy as a shared design responsibility for websites, browsers, and API designers—not solely a setting users must manage.

Cookie controls and Privacy Sandbox status
Privacy features are not a single, stable package shared across browsers. Google’s Chrome Privacy Sandbox status page, last updated 14 August 2026, groups technologies into continued support, deprecate-and-remove, discontinue, and do-not-launch categories. It lists CHIPS and FedCM under continued support. Topics, Protected Audience, Attribution Reporting, and related advertising technologies appear in deprecation, removal, or phaseout descriptions. The status page is a snapshot of Chrome’s plans, not a universal browser policy; check its latest status when a particular feature matters.

In an update last revised 17 October 2025, Google said Chrome would maintain its approach of offering users a choice about third-party cookies, continue supporting CHIPS and FedCM, and retire several other technologies after feedback and low adoption. This is Google’s account of Chrome’s direction, not an independent adoption assessment or a description of every browser’s policy.
Global Privacy Control
Global Privacy Control (GPC) is a signal sent over HTTP and through the Document Object Model (DOM) that communicates a person’s request not to have personal information sold or shared with third parties. W3C describes it as intended to work with existing and future legal frameworks that can make such requests enforceable. Its legal effect depends on the applicable law and geography; the signal does not have the same force everywhere.
How to assess a browser privacy feature
When a browser claims to block tracking or protect privacy, identify what the feature actually addresses. Cookie controls, bounce-tracking protections, fingerprinting mitigations, and identity flows target different mechanisms. Then check the browser and version, whether the control is on by default or requires opt-in, and whether the feature is shipped, experimental, deprecated, or removed. A feature announcement alone does not establish that it is available in a current release.
What these trends do—and do not—show
Passkeys and WebAuthn establish a concrete standards path for public-key sign-in, while privacy guidance offers practical ways to reduce tracking exposure. Neither guarantees universal compatibility, anonymity, or complete protection from determined tracking. The cited evidence does not establish passkey adoption rates, breach reductions, or the relative security effectiveness of browsers.
Browser security also depends on areas not addressed by these standards and status updates, including vulnerability fixes, site isolation, malicious-download protections, extension controls, and enterprise policies. No browser-wide verdict follows from the privacy and authentication developments described here.
