Google Photos can show pictures from several different places, and that is why a photo can seem to disappear. A picture may be backed up to your Google Account, still exist only in a phone folder, be hidden in Archive or Locked Folder, or be attached to a different account.

The quickest place to check is photos.google.com. Sign in with the Google Account you expect to contain the photo. If it is not there, use the checks below before assuming the image was deleted.

Where Google Photos stores backed-up photos

When Backup is enabled, Google Photos uploads photos and videos to your Google Account. Those backed-up items are available in the Google Photos app and at photos.google.com on signed-in devices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Backup sends items to only one Google Account at a time. A photo appearing in your phone’s gallery does not prove that it has been uploaded. Backup may be off, the wrong account may be selected, or the folder containing the image may not be included.

What you see What it usually means
The photo appears at photos.google.com It is stored in the Google Account currently signed in on the web.
The photo appears under “On this device” but not on the web It is probably still local to the phone, or its folder is not being backed up.
The photo is in Archive It is backed up or otherwise available in Google Photos but removed from the main Photos view.
The photo is in Locked Folder It is deliberately excluded from the normal grid, Search, albums, and Memories.
The photo is in Trash It has been marked for deletion and may still be restorable, depending on how long it has been there.

1. Check the Google Account and Backup status

Start with the phone that originally contained the missing photo. In the Google Photos app, open:

Profile picture or initial → Photos settings → Backup

Check each of these settings:

  • Back up: This must be on for new photos to upload.
  • Backup account: Confirm that it is the Google Account you are checking at photos.google.com.
  • Back up device folders: On Android, make sure the folder containing the image is selected.
  • When to back up: Check whether mobile-data restrictions, battery settings, or other upload conditions are preventing the backup.

If you have more than one Google Account, switch accounts in both the mobile app and the website. A common mistake is taking a photo while one account is selected, then searching another account on a computer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On an iPhone or iPad, leave Google Photos open while it is backing up. Quitting the app can interrupt the upload. Connect to Wi-Fi or power if the upload is large, and wait for the backup status in the app to finish before deleting the original from the device.

2. Look in Recently Added

If the photo was uploaded recently, its position in the main timeline may not be obvious. On a computer, open Google Photos and select Recently Added. This view shows items in the order they were backed up, making it useful when the photo’s date is wrong or you do not know where it landed in the timeline.

New uploads may also take time to become searchable. If a keyword search returns nothing, Google recommends trying again in 3–5 days. This does not mean you should wait before checking the account, folders, or upload status; it only explains why a newly backed-up image may not appear in Search immediately.

3. Search with several terms

On a computer, use Search at the top of Google Photos. Try a description rather than relying only on the date, such as:

  • dogs
  • New York City
  • A person’s name, if face labels are available
  • The place, object, or event shown in the image

Try alternate keywords if the first search is empty. For example, search for beach, vacation, and the name of the city rather than assuming Google will classify the picture under one particular term.

Why a photo can have an unexpected date

Google Photos does not always place an image where you expect in the timeline:

  • Photos taken before 4:00 AM are sorted into the previous day.
  • Downloads and scans may contain an incorrect date from the source device or scanner.
  • A changed timestamp can move the image away from the day it was actually saved or received.

For that reason, search by subject and check Recently Added instead of looking only at the date shown in the timeline.

4. Check Android’s “On this device” folders

Android phones can contain images that Google Photos can see locally but has not uploaded. In the mobile app, open:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google Photos → Collections → On this device

Open the folders one by one. Pay particular attention to folders created by:

  • Messaging applications
  • Facebook or Instagram
  • Downloads
  • Screenshots
  • Camera or other camera applications

If you find the image there but not at photos.google.com, check its folder’s backup switch. Open:

Profile picture or initial → Photos settings → Backup → Back up device folders

Turn on the switch for the relevant folder. You can also enable Back up all device folders, which automatically includes photos in newly created device folders.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not delete the local copy until the upload is complete. If a photo is deleted from the Android device before its folder is backed up, it will not appear in Google Photos as a backed-up item.

Device folders are primarily a phone-only view. They become available at photos.google.com only when the folders are backed up.

5. Check Archive

Archiving is not deletion. It removes an item from the main Photos view, but the photo remains available in other places.

On a computer, open:

photos.google.com → Archive

On Android, open:

Google Photos → Collections → Archive

Archived photos can still appear in Search, albums, and device folders. Therefore, an empty main timeline does not prove that the picture is gone. If you find it, open the photo and use the option to remove it from Archive if you want it returned to the main Photos view.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Check Locked Folder

Locked Folder is different from Archive. It is designed to keep selected items out of normal Google Photos views.

On a phone, open:

Google Photos → Collections → Locked

Authenticate with the device screen lock. On a computer, open Google Photos and select Locked Folder, if the items have been backed up for access on the web.

Locked Folder items do not appear in the Photos grid, Memories, Search, albums, shared items, or new Memories. They are also unavailable to third-party sharing apps. That behavior is expected and is often the reason a user cannot find an image through normal Search.

Locked Folder backup matters

If Locked Folder was created on a mobile device with backup disabled, its contents exist only on that device. On Android, review the setting here:

You can also open Locked Folder, authenticate, and change its backup setting there.

Unbacked Locked Folder items can be lost if the Google Photos app is uninstalled, its app data is cleared, the phone is factory-reset, or the device is lost or damaged. They are not transferred through USB-to-USB or cloud device transfers. Also, deleting an item from Locked Folder does not move it to Trash.

Moving an item into Locked Folder moves only the original. Copies, edited versions, or copies saved by other people may remain elsewhere, including Trash.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Look in Trash before the retention period ends

If the image was deleted, check the Trash section in Google Photos. A backed-up photo remains in Trash for more than 60 days before permanent deletion. An item that was not backed up is permanently deleted after more than 30 days in Trash.

Deletion from another gallery or photo app can also remove the copy from the phone before Google Photos finishes backing it up. This is why it is safer to confirm the backup has completed before cleaning up local photos.

Google Takeout is not a recovery tool for permanently deleted images. It exports data that still exists in the account; it cannot retrieve content that Google Photos has permanently deleted.

8. If the photo came from a computer folder

Google’s computer backup arrangements are changing. Google Drive for desktop ends support for Google Photos backup on August 10, 2026. After that date, Google says computer folders must be added to Google Photos instead of continuing to use the Drive-for-desktop Google Photos backup feature.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before that date, the path for stopping backup of a folder in Drive for desktop is:

  1. Open Drive for desktop.
  2. Open Settings → Preferences.
  3. Select Folders from your computer.
  4. Choose the folder.
  5. Uncheck Back up to Google Photos.
  6. Select Done → Save.

Unchecking Sync with Google Drive is optional and is separate from stopping Google Photos backup.

Stopping a folder’s backup prevents future uploads. It does not remove photos that have already been uploaded. Existing items must be deleted manually at photos.google.com.

A practical order for finding a missing photo

  1. Open photos.google.com and verify the selected Google Account.
  2. Check Recently Added.
  3. Search by several subjects, places, and names.
  4. Check the photo’s date, including the previous day for photos taken before 4:00 AM.
  5. On Android, inspect Collections → On this device.
  6. Review Back up device folders and turn on the folder that contains the image.
  7. Check Archive.
  8. Check Locked Folder, using the phone’s screen lock.
  9. Check Trash before the 30-day or 60-day deletion limit passes.
  10. If the image was on a computer, verify the folder’s backup method and whether the upload completed.

Why the usual assumptions fail

Assumption What is actually true
Every photo on the phone is automatically in Google Photos. Backup must be enabled, the intended account must be selected, and Android folders outside the camera folder must be included when necessary.
Archived photos cannot be searched. Archive removes photos from the main view, but they remain searchable and can remain in albums.
Locked Folder is another kind of Archive. Locked Folder excludes items from Search, albums, Memories, shared items, and third-party sharing.
Google Takeout can restore permanently deleted photos. Takeout exports existing account data. It cannot restore permanently deleted Google Photos content.
A missing photo must have been deleted. It may be in another account, Recently Added, Archive, Locked Folder, an Android device folder, or under an unexpected date.

How to avoid losing track of photos

  • Verify the backup account before switching between personal, work, or family Google Accounts.
  • Review Android device-folder backup after installing an app that saves images in a new folder.
  • Keep Google Photos open on iPhone or iPad while a backup is running.
  • Check Recently Added after importing or uploading a large batch.
  • Do not delete local copies until Google Photos reports that backup is complete.
  • If you use Locked Folder, decide whether its backup setting matches the importance and privacy needs of those items.

FAQ

Where are my backed-up Google Photos stored?

They are stored in the Google Account used for Google Photos Backup and can be viewed at photos.google.com or in the Google Photos app when that account is selected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is a photo in my phone gallery but not Google Photos?

The photo may not have finished uploading, Backup may be off, a different Google Account may be selected, or the Android folder containing it may not be included under Back up device folders.

How do I find photos from downloads or messaging apps?

On Android, open Google Photos and go to Collections → On this device. Open the relevant folder, then review Profile picture or initial → Photos settings → Backup → Back up device folders to decide whether it should upload.

Can I search for an archived photo?

Yes. Archived photos remain in Search and albums. Archive removes them from the main Photos view but does not delete them.

Why does my Locked Folder photo not appear in Search?

That is expected. Locked Folder items are excluded from Search, the main grid, Memories, albums, shared items, and third-party sharing. Open Google Photos → Collections → Locked and authenticate with the device screen lock.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How long do deleted Google Photos remain in Trash?

Backed-up photos remain in Trash for more than 60 days before permanent deletion. Photos that were not backed up are permanently deleted after more than 30 days.

Can Google Takeout recover a permanently deleted photo?

No. Takeout exports data that still exists in the account and cannot recover content permanently deleted from Google Photos.

The Bottom Line

Most “missing” Google Photos are not actually gone. Check the Google Account first, then Recently Added, Search, Android’s On this device folders, Archive, Locked Folder, and Trash. The key distinction is whether the image was backed up: a local gallery copy and a copy stored in your Google Account are not the same thing.
