AI is already being applied in automakers’ factories, employee workflows and autonomous-driving programs. But evidence that a company has deployed AI is not the same as proof that AI caused measurable savings, fewer defects or higher profits. Mercedes-Benz’s public announcements show several concrete applications and adoption measures; they do not isolate AI’s contribution to the company’s financial results.
What AI is doing inside automakers
AI in an automobile company is not limited to the software in a vehicle. It can also help staff interpret production-quality information, automate internal workflows, prepare workplace documents or develop and test automated-driving systems. Mercedes-Benz provides a documented example across these areas, but its announcements are company-reported evidence—not an independent comparison of automakers.
The important distinction is between deployment and adoption—evidence that a system is being used, rolled out or planned—and AI-attributable results—a measured business outcome shown to have been caused by AI. The available Mercedes-Benz figures are stronger on implementation and employee adoption than on causal business impact.

| Business area | What Mercedes-Benz describes | Status and reported evidence | What the evidence does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Factory quality and production | AI-based suggestions for rework in the MO360 production ecosystem; AI-based quality control in electric motor manufacturing. | MO360 was described in August 2020 as connecting production applications across more than 30 passenger-car plants. In June 2026, the company said large-scale production of its electric axial-flux motor had begun in Berlin-Marienfelde. | The announcements do not quantify an AI-caused reduction in defects, rework, cycle time or production cost. |
| Employee workflows | A global rollout of a platform for employees to build AI-powered workflows, alongside a global rollout of an AI assistant for routine information work. | The workflow rollout was announced May 12, 2026; the employee assistant rollout was announced March 3, 2026. Mercedes-Benz reported that around 50% of employees used AI weekly, with usage more than doubling over the prior year. | The usage figure is a company-reported adoption snapshot, not a measure of productivity, savings or quality of work. |
| Autonomous driving and robotaxis | Development of a Level 4 robotaxi ecosystem involving vehicles, software, AI models, simulation and partners. | The 2026 announcement described planned S-Class robotaxi test vehicles in Abu Dhabi later in 2026. | A development and testing plan is not evidence that a commercial robotaxi service is operating or that it has produced business returns. |
AI in factory quality and production
MO360 and quality decisions
Mercedes-Benz described its MO360 production ecosystem in an August 6, 2020 announcement as connecting production applications across more than 30 passenger-car plants. Its QUALITY LIVE subsystem gave workers access to live vehicle-quality status and could use AI methods to suggest efficient rework when needed. The stated aim was to support quality-control loops and help vehicles leave the line without rework; the announcement did not report a measured AI-attributable defect or rework reduction.

The same 2020 announcement said the company expected to increase production efficiency by more than 15% by 2022 through improved processes, better data availability and faster decisions. That was a historical target, not a verified result in the announcement. It also discussed connecting plant-maintenance data to MO360 for predictive maintenance as future potential. The motor-replacement example was not evidence of an achieved predictive-maintenance result.
AI-based quality control in electric motor manufacturing
On June 9, 2026, Mercedes-Benz announced the start of large-scale production of its electric axial-flux motor in Berlin-Marienfelde. The company described a process combining automation, laser technology, intelligent controls, AI-based quality control and skilled employees. It reported 98 process steps, of which 65 were new to Mercedes-Benz and 35 new worldwide. Those figures describe the process’s complexity and novelty; they do not measure the standalone effect of AI on quality, throughput or cost.
AI for employee workflows and knowledge work
Building AI-powered workflows
On May 12, 2026, Mercedes-Benz announced a global rollout of n8n so employees could design and deploy AI-powered workflows in areas including research and development, production, sales, financial services, human resources and IT. The company described the rollout as a move beyond pilots toward operational processes. It also said more than 1,500 employees had participated in a company-wide hackathon, with selected ideas to be developed further. Participation and planned development show employee engagement and a route to explore applications; they are not evidence of realized savings or scaled business impact.

AI assistance for routine work
In a March 3, 2026 announcement, Mercedes-Benz described a global rollout of Microsoft 365 Copilot for administrative and production-related work. Examples included support for routine tasks, report creation, information summaries and preparation of decision documents. The company reported that weekly employee AI use was around 50% and had more than doubled over the prior year. This describes reported usage, not how often AI-generated work was accepted, how much time it saved or whether it improved decisions.
Autonomous driving: a development program, not proof of a service
Mercedes-Benz’s 2026 robotaxi announcement described work toward Level 4 projects and an ecosystem involving the S-Class, MB.OS, NVIDIA and Uber. In the announced partnership, NVIDIA was to provide DRIVE Hyperion architecture and DRIVE AV Level 4 software, enhanced by AI models, simulation tools and datasets. Mercedes-Benz also described a separate project involving Momenta and mobility provider Lumo.

The announcement said S-Class robotaxi test vehicles were planned for Abu Dhabi later in 2026. That is a plan for testing, not confirmation that the tests occurred, that a commercial service launched or that the program generated revenue. Autonomous-driving development depends on the vehicle and software stack, testing and partners as well as AI; the announcement does not quantify AI’s separate contribution to safety, operating cost or commercial viability.

Do the published figures show that AI improved business results?
Not on their own. Mercedes-Benz’s February 12, 2026 results announcement reported 2025 group revenue of €132.2 billion and adjusted EBIT of €8.2 billion. It separately reported more than €3.5 billion in positive EBIT contribution from its broader Next Level Performance cost-efficiency program, which included material savings and efficiencies in production and selling, general and administrative expenses. The release did not isolate an AI contribution to revenue, EBIT or those program savings.
Best Value
These company-wide financial figures cannot be presented as AI ROI. To make a defensible AI business-impact claim, a company would need to connect a defined AI deployment to a measured outcome—for example, a change in rework or downtime against a stated baseline—while explaining the period, scope and other changes that could have affected the result. The announcements described here do not provide that kind of causal measurement.
How to assess an automaker’s AI claims
- Identify the status. Distinguish a system in production from a global rollout, an employee pilot, a future capability or a planned test.
- Check what was measured. Usage, participation and process complexity are not equivalent to savings, quality gains or productivity.
- Keep the scope attached to the number. Note the reporting company, date, geography, business unit and whether a figure is a target, a snapshot or a realized result.
- Look for attribution. A company’s financial performance or broad cost program does not show how much AI contributed unless the result is separately measured and linked to the AI use case.
- Separate announcement from operation. A partnership or planned test does not establish a launched service, commercial scale or financial return.
For Mercedes-Benz, the public material establishes AI use or rollout in factory quality, employee workflows and autonomous-driving development, alongside a reported employee-use snapshot. It does not establish what share of the company’s financial performance was caused by AI.
