NASA projects Voyager 1 will reach a distance of one light-day from Earth on November 18, 2026, at 2:16:07 a.m. Pacific Standard Time. That means it will be about 16.094 billion miles (25.902 billion kilometers) away—the distance light travels in 24 hours. The date is a forecast, not confirmation that the milestone has happened.
When will Voyager 1 be one light-day from Earth?
NASA’s Where are Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 Now? page projects the milestone for November 18, 2026, at 2:16:07 a.m. PST. The projected Earth-to-spacecraft distance is 16.094 billion miles (25.902 billion kilometers).
A light-day is the distance light travels in 24 hours. The milestone is therefore a way of describing Voyager 1’s distance from Earth—not its age, and not a date when it reaches a newly defined edge of the solar system. NASA puts it simply: “The milestone Voyager 1 is closing in on is about distance, not time.”

Is Voyager 1 already in interstellar space?
Yes. Voyager 1 crossed the heliopause—the outer boundary of the Sun’s heliosphere—on August 25, 2012, entering interstellar space. NASA’s Voyager overview describes the heliosphere as “the protective bubble of particles and magnetic fields generated by the Sun.” At the crossing, Voyager 1 was about 122 astronomical units from the Sun, or roughly 11 billion miles (18 billion kilometers), according to NASA’s Interstellar Mission page.

The two milestones describe different things:
- Heliopause crossing: a boundary crossing measured relative to the Sun, completed in 2012.
- One light-day from Earth: a distance milestone measured relative to Earth, projected for November 2026.
Reaching one light-day from Earth does not mean Voyager 1 is then entering interstellar space; it has already crossed into it.
How Voyager 1 reached this milestone
Launched on September 5, 1977, Voyager 1 flew past Jupiter in 1979 and Saturn in 1980 before continuing outward. NASA identifies it as the most distant human-made object. The key dates clarify why the upcoming distance marker is not the same event as its departure from the Sun’s heliosphere:

| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| September 5, 1977 | Voyager 1 launches. |
| 1979 | Jupiter flyby. |
| 1980 | Saturn flyby. |
| August 25, 2012 | Crosses the heliopause and enters interstellar space, about 122 AU from the Sun. |
| November 18, 2026 (projected) | Expected to be one light-day from Earth. |
NASA says plasma-wave observations helped confirm the 2012 crossing after Voyager 1’s plasma science instrument had stopped working. The event was a change in the spacecraft’s environment; the 2026 projection is a measure of how far away it is from Earth.

What is Voyager 1 doing in interstellar space?
Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 continue an extended mission to measure the interstellar environment. Instrument status changes over time, so a count should be tied to a dated update rather than treated as a permanent specification. NASA’s mission overview and a later status story report different snapshots of operating science instruments; neither should be read as a timeless count.

What is the Golden Record?
Both Voyager spacecraft carry a 12-inch gold-plated copper disk intended to represent Earth to any potential finders. NASA’s Golden Record contents page says it includes 115 images, natural sounds, music, and greetings in 55 languages. NASA describes the possibility of discovery this way: “The spacecraft will be encountered and the record played only if there are advanced spacefaring civilizations in interstellar space.”
