In the 2026 cycle, Venus reaches inferior conjunction on October 24, 2026, changing from an evening object to a morning object. The first guided attempt is November 4, when Venus rises about 85 minutes before the Sun; a more dependable general window is mid-November, looking low in the east 20–30 minutes before sunrise. Venus reaches greatest brilliancy around November 29.

After a superior conjunction, the direction reverses: Venus returns to the evening sky and becomes visible low in the west after sunset. The superior conjunction on January 6, 2026, was followed by Venus entering the evening sky toward the end of January. The exact first sighting always depends on latitude, horizon conditions, season and twilight.

The 2026 Venus reappearance timeline

Venus does not become visible the instant a conjunction occurs. At conjunction it lies too close to the Sun in our sky, so sunlight and twilight hide it. As Venus gains angular distance from the Sun, it eventually rises or sets far enough from the Sun for an observer to find it.

Event What Venus does in the sky 2026 observing guidance
Inferior conjunction Venus passes between Earth and the Sun and switches from evening visibility to morning visibility. October 24; begin trying in early November. An observing guide uses November 4 as an early attempt, while a mid-November window is safer for most observers.
Morning apparition Venus rises before the Sun and appears in the eastern predawn sky. Look east before sunrise. Around November 29, Venus reaches greatest brilliancy.
Superior conjunction Venus passes behind the Sun from Earth’s viewpoint and switches from morning visibility to evening visibility. The January 6 event was followed by evening visibility toward the end of January.

The dates are global conjunction events, but visibility is not. A clear, unobstructed horizon at your location can reveal Venus earlier than a site with hills, buildings or trees in the relevant direction.

What “morning star” and “evening star” mean

“Morning star” and “evening star” are observing names, not indications that Venus is a star. Venus is a planet. It looks exceptionally bright because it is relatively close to Earth and its cloud tops reflect sunlight efficiently.

An apparition is the interval during which Venus is observable between two solar conjunctions. The interval after an inferior conjunction is the morning apparition: Venus appears before sunrise in the east. The interval after a superior conjunction is the evening apparition: Venus appears after sunset in the west.

Inferior conjunction

At inferior conjunction, Venus is between Earth and the Sun. Its illuminated side faces mostly away from Earth, and its position is very close to the Sun’s direction. As it moves onward in its orbit, Venus separates into the dawn sky. The planet can show a thin crescent during this part of the cycle, but the crescent is difficult to observe while Venus is close to sunrise.

Superior conjunction

At superior conjunction, Venus is on the far side of the Sun from Earth. It is again hidden in solar glare. Afterward it drifts eastward from the Sun’s apparent position and eventually becomes an evening object, setting after the Sun in the western sky.

How long the cycle takes

The synodic cycle of Venus—the time from one matching alignment with the Sun to the next—is about 584 days, according to the current reference information from timeanddate.com. This is the cycle used when discussing repeated morning-to-evening and evening-to-morning transitions as seen from Earth.

A typical morning-star visibility interval lasts about 263 days. The evening interval is similar. “Visibility interval” does not mean Venus is equally easy to see for all 263 days: it may be low in twilight near the beginning and end, and its altitude changes with season and latitude.

How to see Venus after the 2026 inferior conjunction

  1. Choose a clear eastern horizon. A high balcony, open field or shoreline is better than a street surrounded by buildings. Venus will be low, so a small obstruction can hide it.
  2. Plan for the correct twilight. Start looking 20–30 minutes before local sunrise during the conservative mid-November window. An earlier attempt can be made in the first part of November, but the planet may be lower and more affected by haze.
  3. Face east before searching the sky. Venus is the bright point in the predawn eastern sky; it will not be overhead at this stage of the apparition.
  4. Use a known reference. Check the local sunrise time and use a planetarium or ephemeris app set to your exact location to estimate Venus’s altitude and bearing. Do not assume a chart for another latitude applies to you.
  5. Stop before sunrise becomes a safety problem. Once the Sun is near the horizon, keep Venus and the Sun widely separated in your view and never sweep optical equipment toward the Sun.

The early-November attempt

Astronomy’s Sky Guide 2026 lists November 4 as a practical starting date and gives Venus a rise time about 85 minutes before the Sun. This is an opportunity to try, not a guarantee that every observer will see it. Atmospheric haze, a low horizon or a location farther north or south can move the first successful sighting.

The mid-November window

EarthSky recommends a more conservative approach: look east 20–30 minutes before sunrise in mid-November. By then, Venus has gained more separation from the Sun, so it is generally easier to distinguish from bright twilight. If the first morning is unsuccessful, wait several days rather than concluding that the apparition has not started.

Greatest brilliancy

Around November 29, Venus reaches greatest brilliancy in this morning apparition. Brightness is helpful, but it does not eliminate horizon and twilight problems. The planet can be brilliant and still hidden by a ridge, trees or low cloud.

How to see Venus after a superior conjunction

The viewing direction reverses after a superior conjunction. Instead of searching before sunrise, choose an unobstructed western horizon and begin looking after sunset. Venus will initially be low and immersed in twilight. On successive evenings it generally remains above the horizon longer, making the evening apparition easier to follow.

  1. Find the local sunset time and arrive with a clear view west.
  2. Wait until the Sun has set; do not scan near the Sun while it is above the horizon.
  3. Search low in the western sky during the remaining twilight.
  4. As Venus gains elongation from the Sun, shift your observing time later after sunset and expect a higher or more obvious position.

The January 6, 2026 superior conjunction illustrates this pattern: Venus began entering the evening sky toward the end of January rather than appearing immediately on the conjunction date.

Why latitude changes the first visible date

There is no single first-visibility date that works worldwide. Venus’s angular distance from the Sun may be identical for two observers, yet the planet can stand at very different heights above the horizon because of Earth’s curvature, the season and the angle of the ecliptic.

Published charts for approximately 50° north, 10° north and 30° south show why location matters. A chart prepared for one of those latitudes can give the wrong impression about how soon Venus rises, how high it climbs and how long twilight leaves it visible. Local horizon obstructions and atmospheric clarity add further variation.

Local factor Effect on reappearance What to do
Latitude Changes the angle at which Venus’s path meets the horizon. Use coordinates for your city rather than a generic national forecast.
Season Changes the ecliptic’s tilt relative to the horizon at dawn or dusk. Use a date-specific sky chart.
Horizon height Hills, buildings and trees can hide a low Venus. Move to an open site or a higher viewpoint.
Twilight and haze Bright sky and low-altitude extinction reduce contrast. Observe on a transparent morning or evening and allow several attempts.
Clock and daylight rules Sunrise and sunset times differ by location and date. Plan from local civil times, not a time copied from another city.

Unaided-eye, binocular and telescope observing

Start with the unaided eye. Venus is bright enough that optical aid is not required once it is sufficiently separated from the Sun. This approach also reduces the risk of accidentally pointing an instrument toward sunlight.

Tripod-mounted binoculars can help with the thin November crescent, as noted in Astronomy’s guide. A tripod prevents hand shake while you work close to the horizon. Binoculars are optional; they do not make an unsafe solar pointing practice safe.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A telescope can show Venus’s changing phase. Use it only after the Sun is safely below the horizon for evening observations or before it is safely above the horizon for morning observations, and follow the instrument maker’s verified solar-safety procedure. Never point binoculars or a telescope near the Sun without purpose-built solar filters installed correctly and a procedure you understand.

Common reasons you cannot find Venus

  • You searched on the conjunction date. Conjunction places Venus in solar glare; wait for angular separation to grow.
  • You looked in the wrong direction. Inferior conjunction is followed by an eastern morning appearance; superior conjunction is followed by a western evening appearance.
  • Your horizon is blocked. Venus may be below the visible skyline even when an astronomy chart shows it above the mathematical horizon.
  • You used another latitude’s chart. Replace it with a location-specific chart or app.
  • You searched too late in twilight. The sky can brighten faster than Venus gains altitude. Begin at the planned interval before sunrise or after sunset.
  • Cloud or haze is masking a low planet. Try a different morning or evening with better transparency.
  • You used optics too close to the Sun. Put safety first; return to unaided-eye observing and wait for a safer separation.

A practical planning rule for future apparitions

For any future cycle, first identify whether the recent conjunction was inferior or superior. Inferior means “morning next,” so plan an eastern predawn search after several days of separation. Superior means “evening next,” so plan a western post-sunset search. Then adjust the date using your latitude, horizon and local twilight rather than relying on a universal number of days.

The 2026 dates provide a useful model: an inferior conjunction on October 24, an early observing-guide attempt in early November, a safer mid-November window for many observers and greatest brilliancy near the end of that month. The same sequence—conjunction, increasing separation, practical visibility, then peak brightness—recurs, but the calendar dates and local ease of observation change from one cycle to another.
