Use Elemental when you want a weapon attack to carry a chosen element or armor to resist that element. Use Magnify when a linked spell needs to affect several allies or enemies and you can accept reduced potency. Use Synergy on a supporting party member to make that ally follow the controlled character’s attack command with a linked spell, provided the ally has enough MP and ATB.

All three are blue support materia, but they solve different tactical problems. The sections below explain their slot requirements, rank effects, acquisition points, and the situations in which each one is worth equipping in Final Fantasy VII Remake (not Final Fantasy VII Rebirth).

Choose the materia by the problem you need to solve

Materia Main job Required setup Primary limitation Best use
Elemental Adds an elemental property to weapon attacks or provides elemental armor protection Link Elemental with an elemental magic materia in a linked weapon or armor slot Consumes a linked equipment slot and only helps with the element you selected Exploit a known enemy weakness or prepare for a known elemental attack
Magnify Expands a linked spell to multiple targets Link Magnify with a spell materia The spell’s effect is reduced when spread across targets Party-wide healing, group protection, or area elemental damage
Synergy Causes an ally to cast a linked spell after the controlled character attacks Equip Synergy and link one of its supported elemental spells The ally must have enough MP and ATB; the guide reports the follow-up uses the first-rank spell Adding automatic magic pressure while you direct another character

The practical distinction is simple: Elemental changes what attacks or armor do, Magnify changes how many targets a spell reaches, and Synergy changes when an ally casts. They are not interchangeable ways to increase ordinary spell damage.

When Elemental materia is the right choice

How the weapon pairing works

Elemental must be placed in a linked equipment slot beside a second materia that supplies an element, such as Fire, Ice, Lightning, or Wind. On a weapon, that pairing adds the linked element to the character’s weapon attacks. It is most valuable when you know an enemy is vulnerable to that element and want basic attacks, weapon skills, or other weapon-based actions to carry the property without manually casting a spell first. The linked-element setup and the weapon-versus-armor behavior are described in the GameSpot Elemental materia guide.

Elemental does not let you choose a new element for every hit. The magic materia beside it determines the element, so change the pair when the encounter calls for something different. If the equipment does not have a genuinely linked pair of slots, placing the two materia next to each other will not create the effect.

How the armor pairing works

Put Elemental in a linked armor slot with an elemental magic materia when survival matters more than an elemental weapon property. The pair gives protection against the linked element. This is a preparation tool for a boss or area whose elemental attacks are predictable; it is less useful when enemies use several unrelated elements or mostly physical damage.

Guide-reported rank progression

PowerPyx lists the following Elemental weapon bonuses and defensive progression. These are guide-reported game mechanics, not independently measured tests:

Elemental rank Weapon effect Armor effect
Rank 1 8% elemental weapon-damage bonus Halves damage from the linked element
Rank 2 15% elemental weapon-damage bonus Prevents damage from the linked element
Rank 3 23% elemental weapon-damage bonus Absorbs damage from the linked element

The percentages and the halving, prevention, and absorption sequence are reported by PowerPyx’s materia guide. Treat the armor effect as a reason to level Elemental for repeated elemental encounters, rather than assuming a level-one copy provides immunity.

Where to obtain Elemental

  • First copy: Chapter 6, Plate Mid-Level, Section H, around Sun Lamp 3.
  • Second copy: Chapter 14, after completing the required side-quest progress and obtaining the Guardian Angel letter.

The Chapter 14 opportunity is conditional. The GameSpot walkthrough says the Chapter 9 side-quest sets are not themselves required for that second copy; the relevant requirement is completing all side quests through the point where the letter appears in Chapter 14. If the copy is not present, check that progression before assuming the materia or chapter is bugged.

Elemental loadouts that make sense

  • Known elemental weakness: Link Elemental to the matching magic materia on the weapon of the character who will spend the most time attacking. This keeps pressure on the weakness while conserving ATB that would otherwise go to repeated elemental casts.
  • Known elemental boss attack: Link Elemental and that element on armor. The higher-rank protection becomes increasingly valuable when the boss repeats the same spell or elemental area attack.
  • Uncertain encounter: Keep Elemental unlinked or use a different support materia until you know which element matters. A linked slot occupied by the wrong element gives no protection against the attack you actually need to survive.

When Magnify materia is worth the trade-off

What Magnify changes

Magnify expands the target range of the spell materia linked to it. A linked Healing spell can cover multiple party members, Barrier can protect more than one ally, and an elemental spell can hit a group rather than a single enemy. The expansion is not free: the spell’s effect is reduced when it is spread across targets.

Rank reductions

Gamer Guides reports these reductions at Magnify’s three ranks:

Magnify rank Reported reduction when the spell is expanded What that means in practice
Rank 1 60% Broad coverage, but a substantial potency loss
Rank 2 45% A more workable compromise for routine multi-target support
Rank 3 25% The smallest reported reduction, while retaining multi-target reach

These figures come from the Gamer Guides Magnify entry, updated in 2026. They describe the reduction applied when you broaden the spell, so a single-target cast remains the better choice when maximum potency on one target is more important than coverage.

Best Magnify pairings

  • Healing: Use it when several party members need help at once and a slightly weaker heal is still enough to stabilize the group. If only one character is near defeat, use the spell without the multi-target expansion so the potency is not unnecessarily sacrificed.
  • Barrier: Expanding a defensive spell can protect the party before a large incoming attack. The value is highest when the whole group will remain in danger, not when one character alone is being targeted.
  • Elemental offense: Link it to an elemental spell against clustered enemies. You trade single-target strength for the ability to damage a group with one cast, which can be efficient when several enemies share the same weakness.

Where to find Magnify

The Magnify materia is in Chapter 9’s Collapsed Expressway, in the second puzzle. The location is listed by Gamer Guides. Because it is found during a puzzle sequence rather than purchased as a normal shop item, inspect the second puzzle area carefully before leaving the expressway section.

Magnify mistakes to avoid

  • Do not assume a multi-target spell is automatically stronger. The rank-based reduction can make a spread heal or attack weaker than a focused cast.
  • Do not spend the linked slot on Magnify for a character who almost always casts at one target. Give that character an unlinked spell instead and reserve Magnify for the party member handling group support.
  • Do not confuse target expansion with elemental coverage. Magnify changes the number of targets; the spell materia still determines the element or function.

How Synergy materia works

The trigger is an attack command

Synergy is an automatic follow-up, not a way to make the controlled character cast for free. Equip Synergy on a supporting party member and link it to a supported spell. When you issue an attack command with the character you control, the equipped ally can follow with the linked spell. The ally still needs enough MP and ATB, so the follow-up will not occur whenever either resource is depleted.

This setup lets you keep directing a melee combo, ranged attack, or other command while a partner adds magic pressure in response. It is particularly useful when you want a second damage type without constantly switching control to the caster.

Supported spells and rank limitation

The Synergy guide lists Fire, Ice, Lightning, Wind, and Poison as supported linked materia. It also reports that the follow-up uses the first-rank spell. In other words, do not build a plan around Synergy automatically selecting a higher-level version simply because the linked materia has been leveled; the documented behavior is the first-rank spell.

That restriction also means Synergy is not a general-purpose trigger for every spell in the game. If the materia you link is outside the supported list, the automatic follow-up described here will not be available.

Where to obtain Synergy

Synergy becomes purchasable from Chadley in Chapter 8 after Battle Intel reports 6–9. The acquisition point is listed in the Android Central materia guide. If Chadley does not offer it, check the Battle Intel report requirements and chapter progression rather than searching ordinary materia shops.

A reliable Synergy setup

  1. Give Synergy to the party member you expect to leave outside direct control.
  2. Link Synergy with one supported spell materia: Fire, Ice, Lightning, Wind, or Poison.
  3. Make sure that ally has enough MP before beginning the fight and has a usable ATB bar when you expect the follow-up.
  4. Control the character whose attack commands should trigger the response.
  5. Watch the ally’s resources and positioning. If MP or ATB is empty, your attack command will not produce the automatic spell, and you may need to switch control or issue a direct command.

Using the three together in a party plan

These materia can complement one another when each occupies a different tactical role. For example, Elemental on a melee weapon can exploit a known weakness, Magnify on a support character can spread Healing or Barrier, and Synergy on a third character can add an automatic elemental follow-up. The linked-slot requirement means you must check each weapon and armor layout before committing to the combination; a powerful idea that cannot fit into linked slots is not a usable loadout.

Plan around the encounter rather than trying to equip all three by default. Use Elemental defensively when the enemy’s element is predictable, offensively when the weakness is reliable, Magnify when several targets need the same spell, and Synergy when you can keep the supporting ally supplied with MP and ATB. If an encounter does not offer one of those conditions, an unlinked spell or another support materia may provide more consistent value.

Troubleshooting: why the expected effect is missing

  • Elemental has no effect: Confirm that Elemental and the elemental magic materia are in a truly linked pair of equipment slots, then verify that you put the pair on the intended weapon or armor. The magic materia beside it controls the element.
  • Magnify feels weak: Check whether you expanded the spell to multiple targets. The guide-reported 60%, 45%, and 25% reductions apply to the three ranks when the effect is spread; use a single target when full potency matters.
  • Synergy does not cast: Confirm that the linked spell is Fire, Ice, Lightning, Wind, or Poison, and check the supporting ally’s MP and ATB. The documented trigger is the controlled character’s attack command, and the follow-up is reported as a first-rank spell.
  • The materia is not available: Recheck chapter and progression conditions. Elemental’s second copy is conditional in Chapter 14, Magnify is in the Chapter 9 Collapsed Expressway’s second puzzle, and Synergy requires the Chapter 8 Chadley Battle Intel 6–9 milestone.
