Use Amazon SQS for work that consumers should pull from a durable queue, Amazon SNS when one publication should be pushed to many subscribers, and Amazon EventBridge when rules should route events by their content. They are complementary services, not interchangeable versions of the same tool. SQS controls processing pace, SNS distributes notifications, and EventBridge separates event producers from downstream routing decisions. Combining them is often the right architecture.
A quick decision path
Start with the delivery behavior your application needs:
- A worker should retrieve and process work when ready: choose Amazon SQS. Producers place messages in a queue; consumers poll it independently. This is the natural fit for background jobs, burst absorption, and worker fleets that scale separately from producers.
- The same notification should reach several subscribers: choose Amazon SNS. A publisher sends one message to a topic, and SNS pushes it to subscribed endpoints such as HTTP/S, email, SMS, mobile push, Lambda, or SQS.
- Different destinations should receive events based on event fields: choose Amazon EventBridge. Producers emit events, while event patterns and rules decide which targets receive matching events.
- You need more than one behavior: compose services. SNS can fan out to separate SQS queues, and EventBridge can route matching events to SQS for buffering and independently paced processing.
This choice is about who initiates delivery, where messages wait, and how recipients are selected. A queue, a notification topic, and an event bus solve different coordination problems.

Amazon SQS: pull-based work queues
With SQS, a producer sends a message to a queue. A consumer polls the queue, receives available work, processes it, and removes it after successful handling. Messages remain in the queue until they are consumed or expire; the AWS comparison guide describes a maximum retention period of 14 days.

Because consumers control when they poll and how many workers run, a queue forms a durable buffer between production and processing. A sudden burst of image-resize jobs, reports, or account tasks does not require workers to run at the same rate as the producer. Teams can add or remove consumers without changing the producer.
SQS is at-least-once delivery according to the AWS comparison guide. A message can therefore be delivered more than once, so handlers should be idempotent: processing the same message twice must not create two charges, duplicate records, or conflicting side effects. Queue consumers also need an explicit strategy for failures, such as retrying transient errors and isolating repeatedly failing messages in a dead-letter design.
Amazon SNS: push-based publication
SNS starts with a publisher sending a message to a topic. SNS then pushes that publication to the topic’s subscriptions. Each subscription can represent a different endpoint, which makes SNS suitable for broadcast notifications and pub/sub workflows where subscribers should not poll a shared queue.

Subscription filter policies let subscribers select only messages that match their attributes. For example, a billing subscriber could receive billing events while an operations subscriber receives operational events from the same topic. Filtering is attached to subscriptions, so the publisher can publish once without embedding every subscriber’s routing logic in application code.
SNS is useful when delivery should be immediate to multiple destinations, including endpoint types AWS identifies as SNS considerations such as email and SMS. For application workers that need buffering, an SNS subscription can target an SQS queue instead of sending directly to a process.
Amazon EventBridge: rule-based event routing
EventBridge receives events on an event bus. Rules inspect event content with event patterns and route matching events to configured targets. A producer can report that an event occurred without knowing which Lambda function, AWS service, API destination, queue, or other event bus should handle it.
This separation is the key distinction from SNS. SNS subscribers generally subscribe to a topic’s publication stream and optionally filter by subscription attributes. EventBridge rules make the event payload itself the basis for routing. You can add or change a target by changing a rule rather than modifying every producer.

The AWS comparison guide does not provide an ordering guarantee for EventBridge. The same guide describes EventBridge delivery as at least once, so consumers must tolerate duplicates and should not rely on event arrival order for business correctness.

When Amazon SQS is the right choice
Asynchronous task processing
Put a unit of work in SQS when the producer should finish without waiting for a worker. A background image-resize service can enqueue one job per image; workers poll, process, and scale independently. The producer does not need to know which worker receives a particular job.
Burst buffering
Use SQS when production can temporarily exceed processing capacity. The queue absorbs the burst, and consumers drain it at a rate their dependencies can sustain. This prevents a short traffic spike from forcing every downstream component to scale immediately.
Independent consumer scaling
A queue is usually the cleanest boundary when one logical work stream has a worker pool. Scale consumers based on backlog and processing capacity rather than coupling them to the producer’s request rate.
FIFO requirements
Select an SQS FIFO queue when strict sequence matters to the work itself, such as ordered state transitions for one entity. Ordering adds a constraint: the consumer design must preserve the ordering model, and handlers must still be safe if a delivery is repeated. Do not choose FIFO merely because duplicates are inconvenient; choose it when sequence is a business requirement.
When Amazon SNS is the right choice
One notification, many subscribers
Publish an order-status event to SNS when several teams or systems need the same notification. Subscribers can be added without changing the publishing application. This is classic fan-out: one publication, multiple deliveries.

Different endpoint types
SNS is appropriate when recipients include application endpoints and notification channels. HTTP/S endpoints, email, SMS, mobile push, Lambda, and SQS are all distinct subscription shapes, so the topic can distribute the same logical notification to systems with different delivery mechanisms.

Use subscription filter policies when subscribers need different subsets of a topic. The publisher supplies message attributes, and each subscription declares which values it accepts. This keeps simple recipient selection out of producer code while retaining a shared topic.
Ordered pub/sub
SNS FIFO topics support ordered delivery. Use one when multiple subscribers need an ordered publication stream and the topic model fits better than a work queue. If subscribers must process at their own pace or retain backlog, subscribe SQS queues to the topic.
When Amazon EventBridge is the right choice
Content-based routing
Choose EventBridge when destination selection depends on fields in an event. A rule can match event source, type, account, region, or other event-pattern fields and send matching events to selected targets. The producer emits a fact; routing remains a separately managed concern.
Decoupled event-driven architecture
EventBridge is valuable when teams evolve independently. A producer should not need deployment changes each time a new consumer is added, removed, or redirected. AWS Prescriptive Guidance describes EventBridge as commonly used with other messaging services such as Amazon SQS and Amazon SNS.

Use an event bus when AWS resource or application events should trigger selected handlers. For example, an infrastructure-change event can be routed only to the compliance function, while a different event type goes to an operations workflow. Rules express that selection without making the emitting service aware of every consumer.
Where EventBridge is not a queue substitute
Do not select EventBridge simply because you need durable work storage. The AWS comparison guide presents it as a real-time event-processing and routing service, not as a queue with the SQS retention model. If a consumer must absorb bursts, pause processing, or work through a backlog at its own rate, route the event to SQS.

Combinations that solve common architecture problems
SNS to SQS: fan-out plus independent processing
Give each independently paced consumer its own SQS queue subscribed to an SNS topic. SNS broadcasts the publication, while each queue stores that subscriber’s copy until its workers process it. A billing team can therefore retry or pause its queue without slowing an operations team consuming another queue.
This pattern is preferable to putting several worker applications on one shared queue when every application must receive every notification. A shared queue distributes work among consumers; separate queues preserve one copy per subscriber.
Recommended Free Tools
EventBridge to SQS: content routing plus buffering
Create EventBridge rules that match relevant event fields and target an SQS queue. EventBridge decides which events belong to the workflow; SQS lets downstream workers poll at a controlled pace and absorb bursts. This combination keeps routing logic out of producers and processing control out of the event bus.
EventBridge and SNS together
Use EventBridge when event content determines which category of workflow should run, then use SNS inside a selected workflow when that workflow must notify several subscribers. The services can represent different stages: EventBridge classifies and routes, SNS broadcasts, and SQS buffers work for consumers that need it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Ordering, duplicates, retries, and failure design
Ordering
Use SQS FIFO queues or SNS FIFO topics when ordered delivery is an explicit requirement. EventBridge provides no ordering guarantee, so consumers must handle events arriving in an order different from their creation time. If order is essential after EventBridge routing, place work behind an ordering-capable queue and design the event-to-queue mapping carefully.
Duplicate delivery
The AWS comparison guide describes SQS and EventBridge as at-least-once delivery services. Make handlers idempotent by recording a stable event or task identifier, using conditional writes, or designing updates so repeating the same operation produces the same state. Do not equate at-least-once transport with exactly-once business outcomes.

Queues are useful precisely because consumers can fall behind temporarily, but a permanently failing message can block progress or consume repeated attempts. Define retry limits, dead-letter handling, alerting, and a replay procedure. EventBridge targets and SNS endpoints also need failure monitoring appropriate to their delivery path; do not assume that switching services removes the need for operational recovery.

Producer ownership
Ask who should own the destination decision. If the producer knows the exact subscriber and is intentionally invoking it, a direct call may be simpler. If one publication should reach many known subscribers, SNS is a natural boundary. If destinations should be selected by event content and changed independently, EventBridge keeps that policy out of producer code.
Cost and operational planning
AWS’s November 2025 comparison guide identifies different billing dimensions rather than declaring one service universally cheapest:
- SQS: API requests and data transferred.
- SNS: API requests, notifications delivered, and data transferred.
- EventBridge: events published and target invocations.
Calculate the design using the relevant AWS pricing pages before deployment. Region, payload size, number of subscribers or targets, request pattern, data transfer path, and current free-tier terms can change the result. A fan-out design may incur delivery or invocation activity for every recipient, while a queue design may incur polling requests and storage-related behavior. Exact current charges were not established here, so a service should not be selected on a generic “cheapest” claim.

A practical selection checklist
- Does a consumer need to pull work when it has capacity? Start with SQS.
- Must every subscriber receive the publication? Start with SNS; give each independently paced worker its own SQS subscription.
- Should event fields determine destinations? Start with EventBridge rules.
- Do you need a backlog, burst absorption, or consumer-controlled pacing? Include SQS.
- Is strict sequence required? Use an SQS FIFO queue or SNS FIFO topic; never assume EventBridge ordering.
- Can processing safely repeat? Build idempotency for SQS and EventBridge at-least-once delivery.
- Will routing rules change more often than producers? Put the routing policy in EventBridge.
- Are email, SMS, mobile push, HTTP/S, Lambda, or queue subscriptions part of the fan-out? SNS supports these subscription shapes.
- Have you modeled request, delivery, invocation, event, and data-transfer charges for the actual region and workload?
Worked architecture choices
Background image resizing
Place each resize job in SQS. Workers poll and scale independently, and the producer can accept uploads without waiting for image processing. Use FIFO only if images for a particular workflow must be processed in sequence; otherwise, a standard queue is the simpler starting point.
An order event for several teams
Publish the order notification to SNS when fulfillment, billing, analytics, and customer communications all need it. Subscribe separate SQS queues for teams that require buffering and isolated processing. This prevents one slow consumer from delaying the others.
An AWS resource change for selected handlers
Send the event to EventBridge and create rules that match the relevant event fields. Route compliance-related events to a compliance target and operational events to an operations target. The emitting component does not need a hard-coded list of handlers.
Event routing during traffic spikes
Route matching EventBridge events to SQS when downstream processing must pause, scale gradually, or absorb bursts. EventBridge performs selection; SQS provides the work backlog.
Bottom line
SQS is the queue when consumers should pull durable work. SNS is the topic when one publication should be pushed to many subscribers. EventBridge is the event bus when content-based rules should decide destinations independently of producers. Choose the service whose delivery and routing model matches the requirement, then compose them when an architecture needs broadcast, filtering, buffering, ordering, or independent consumer pace at the same time.
