Use a multilayer ceramic capacitor (MLCC) when a circuit needs a small, non-polar capacitor with very low ESR and ESL for local bypassing, decoupling, or high-frequency filtering. Use tantalum or conductive polymer when the design depends more on bias-stable bulk capacitance, ripple handling, controlled ESR, or freedom from ceramic piezoelectric noise. The decision is made with the selected part’s effective capacitance, voltage, temperature, ripple, mechanical behavior, and the regulator’s stability limits—not from the nominal capacitance or technology name alone.

Start with the circuit function

The same nominal value can behave very differently depending on where it is installed. Identify the electrical job before comparing capacitor technologies.

Bypass and high-frequency decoupling

An IC supply pin needs a low-impedance path for fast current changes. MLCCs are usually well suited because their construction can provide low equivalent series resistance (ESR) and equivalent series inductance (ESL) in a compact package. Analog Devices describes MLCCs as combining small size with low effective ESR and ESL and says they are usually the first choice for bypass capacitors in the context of its application note: Analog Devices AN-1099. Texas Instruments also characterizes ceramic capacitors as small with very low ESR and ESL in its converter application report: TI application report.

For a high-speed digital rail or a local analog supply, place the MLCC close to the pins, keep the current loop short, and verify that the capacitor still has enough capacitance at the rail voltage. A large nominal value that collapses under bias may provide less filtering than a smaller, better-behaved part.

Bulk energy storage and load transients

Bulk positions—such as a power-supply input, converter output, or a rail feeding a processor—may require more capacitance than a practical single MLCC can deliver at its operating voltage. Conductive-polymer aluminum capacitors are intended for this type of role in many designs. Murata describes its polymer aluminum electrolytic series as offering large capacitance, low ESR, capacitance stability against DC bias, and use at power-supply input and output and CPU load-backup positions: Murata capacitor selection guide.

Several MLCCs can be paralleled for bulk capacitance, but that changes board area, mounting stress, high-frequency impedance, inrush behavior, and the converter’s control-loop response. Treat it as a new output network rather than an automatic replacement.

Timing, sensing, and precision filtering

If capacitance accuracy over voltage and temperature is more important than maximum capacitance per volume, choose a stable dielectric. Class 1 C0G/NP0 ceramics have negligible temperature change and negligible DC-voltage coefficient in Vishay’s comparison. They are useful for timing, resonant, and precision analog networks when the required value is available in the needed package and voltage rating. Their capacitance density is generally lower than that of Class 2 dielectrics, so they are not a universal bulk-capacitor solution.

Why nominal MLCC capacitance can be misleading

DC-bias loss in Class 2 dielectrics

High-dielectric-constant ceramics such as X7R pack substantial nominal capacitance into a small volume. Applying a DC voltage changes the dielectric’s operating point and can reduce capacitance significantly. Analog Devices advises selecting a dielectric that maintains the minimum required capacitance across the working temperature and DC-bias range. Read the manufacturer’s capacitance-versus-voltage curve for the exact capacitance, package size, rated voltage, and construction; a curve for a different case size is not a reliable substitute.

Temperature and aging

Vishay’s 2025 comparison lists a C0G/NP0 temperature delta of 0 ppm and an X7R temperature delta of ±15%. The same table lists X7R’s DC-voltage coefficient at rated voltage as −20% to −50% and an aging rate of 1% to 3% per decade-hour. These are values for the listed dielectric categories and the table’s conditions, not universal limits for every MLCC. Include tolerance, temperature, bias, and applicable aging in the minimum-capacitance calculation.

Package size and mounting stress

Two capacitors with the same nominal value and voltage rating can have different bias curves because their dielectric volume and internal construction differ. Smaller packages save space but may provide less effective capacitance. Flex cracking from board bending or depanelization can create intermittent or shorted failures. Follow the capacitor maker’s recommended land pattern, keep soldering within its profile, and avoid placing the part where board flex is concentrated.

Piezoelectric and acoustic behavior

Some ceramic capacitors convert electrical ripple or mechanical strain into vibration. In an audible-frequency power converter, that vibration can become coil-and-board noise or a faint whistle; in a sensitive sensor or microphone path, it can couple as an unwanted signal. If this mechanism is unacceptable, a tantalum or polymer part can remove that particular ceramic effect, although layout and other magnetic or mechanical sources still require attention.

When an MLCC is the better choice

  • Local bypassing, high-frequency decoupling, or filtering benefits directly from very low ESR and ESL.
  • The required effective capacitance is modest enough that the selected part retains it at the rail’s DC voltage and temperature.
  • A non-polar component simplifies a rail that may see alternating or uncertain polarity during operation or test.
  • A C0G/NP0 part meets the value and voltage requirement and the circuit needs negligible temperature coefficient and DC-voltage dependence.
  • The assembly can tolerate ceramic mechanical sensitivity, or the chosen construction and layout have been checked for acoustic and flex-crack risk.

Use several values or locations only when the impedance, placement, and control-loop analysis justify them. More capacitors are not automatically better: extremely low ESR can remove damping that a regulator or converter relies on.

When to consider tantalum

Stable compact capacitance

Tantalum can be attractive when a polarized, compact capacitor must provide useful capacitance without the pronounced Class 2 MLCC bias loss. It is a choice for a specific series, not a blanket replacement for ceramic. Conventional manganese-dioxide solid tantalum and conductive-polymer tantalum have different ESR, surge, leakage, and failure characteristics.

Leakage and derating

Leakage may be much higher than that of an equal-value ceramic. Analog Devices gives an example in AN-1099: a 1 µF, 25 V tantalum has maximum leakage of 2.5 µA at rated voltage while operating at 85 °C. That is an example tied to the note, not a universal tantalum specification. Check the exact series for leakage at the actual temperature and voltage, then verify voltage derating, surge-current limits, ripple heating, and assembly restrictions. Protect polarized parts from reverse voltage during startup, shutdown, hot-plugging, and fault conditions.

When conductive polymer is the better fit

Choose a conductive-polymer aluminum or polymer tantalum series when the rail needs comparatively large capacitance, low ESR, and sustained ripple-current capability. These parts can hold capacitance more consistently under DC bias than a high-k MLCC and avoid ceramic piezoelectric behavior. Their trade-offs include polarity, a usually larger footprint than an MLCC, finite voltage and temperature ranges, leakage, and series-specific assembly limits.

Check the complete impedance and thermal picture. A low ESR that improves load-step response in one converter can violate the stability window of another. Ripple current must be evaluated with the capacitor’s temperature, lifetime, and airflow assumptions; do not substitute a headline ripple number measured under different conditions.

A practical capacitor-selection workflow

  1. Define the function. Record whether the position is an IC bypass, switching-node filter, regulator output, input bulk reservoir, timing element, or load-backup capacitor. Note the expected ripple spectrum, load steps, and whether the capacitor sees a DC bias or polarity reversal.
  2. Read the controller or regulator documentation. Capture minimum and maximum capacitance, allowable ESR/ESL, ripple-current requirements, startup behavior, and any stability diagrams. Do not assume two regulators accept the same capacitor technology. A capacitor substitution changes the output network.
  3. Calculate MLCC effective capacitance. For a Class 2 part, use the exact vendor DC-bias and temperature curves, then apply tolerance and aging where relevant. Compare the resulting minimum to the circuit requirement, not to the printed nominal µF.
  4. Check voltage and polarity margin. Use the worst-case steady-state voltage, startup overshoot, hot-plug surge, and fault condition. MLCCs are non-polar; tantalum and aluminum polymer capacitors are polarized and need a voltage and reverse-voltage plan.
  5. Evaluate ripple and heating. Use the series-specific ripple-current rating at the actual frequency and temperature. Estimate self-heating and verify that the board, airflow, and nearby heat sources do not invalidate the rating.
  6. Check noise and mechanics. Investigate ceramic acoustic or microphonic sensitivity, board-flex risk, soldering profile, and the consequences of a cracked or shorted part. If audible or sensor noise matters, compare a polymer or tantalum candidate in the same operating test.
  7. Compare complete part numbers. Record capacitance, tolerance, voltage, dielectric, case size, ESR/ESL versus frequency, leakage, ripple, temperature range, lifetime or aging information, and manufacturer assembly limits. Recalculate after changing package size, dielectric, or vendor series.
  8. Validate the assembled design. Measure rail ripple, load-step response, startup and shutdown, temperature rise, and audible behavior on production-like boards. Recheck stability after layout changes or any capacitor technology substitution.

Regulator and converter stability deserves special attention

Output capacitors are part of a control loop, so capacitance and ESR are functional parameters rather than passive shopping choices. Analog Devices gives an LDO-specific example in AN-1099 in which the devices discussed require at least 1 µF at the output and ESR no greater than 1 Ω; that example is not a general rule for all LDOs. The note also explains that higher output capacitance can improve transient response in its example.

Switching converters can have different requirements. Texas Instruments’ D-CAP2 report illustrates that stability depends on the controller topology and the output network. Follow the exact controller data sheet and application guidance, including any recommended capacitor type, ESR range, and layout. If replacing a polymer part with very-low-ESR MLCCs, or the reverse, recheck phase margin and transient behavior instead of relying on the old design’s test results.

Failure, reliability, and system consequences

Technology selection should include what happens when the capacitor is damaged. An MLCC can crack from board flex or thermal stress; a short on a low-voltage rail may pull down an entire system. Tantalum requires surge control and derating because an overstressed polarized part can fail catastrophically; leakage may also upset a high-impedance node. Polymer parts need attention to ripple self-heating, voltage and temperature limits, leakage, and the manufacturer’s specified failure behavior.

Ask whether a short is safe, whether a fuse or current limit is present, and whether a failed capacitor can create a hazardous temperature or fire condition. Where the consequence is severe, use the vendor’s qualification and reliability data for the exact series and consider redundant or fault-limited architecture.

How to make the final choice

Select the MLCC when its minimum effective capacitance remains above the circuit requirement and its low impedance, compact size, and non-polar construction solve the dominant problem. Select tantalum when a particular polarized series provides the needed stable capacitance and its leakage, surge, ripple, and derating limits are acceptable. Select conductive polymer when bulk capacitance, low ESR, ripple handling, and DC-bias stability outweigh the MLCC’s size advantage.

Document the operating voltage, temperature range, ripple and transient profile, board footprint, noise limits, and controller stability requirements alongside the chosen part number. The correct answer is the part that meets those conditions over its service life—not whichever technology has the largest nominal capacitance or the smallest package.
