Retire a power bank immediately if it is swollen or misshapen, unusually hot or overheating, leaking or venting, or showing other abnormal changes such as discoloration or odd noises. Stop charging it as well as using it. You do not need to see every symptom before acting: one serious warning sign is enough.
A power bank can feel slightly warm during ordinary charging or discharging. The safety guidance from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) does not set a universal temperature cutoff, so the deciding issue is excessive, unusual, or escalating heat rather than a specific number on a thermometer.
The four signs that mean stop using a power bank
| Warning sign | What to look for | Immediate response |
|---|---|---|
| Swelling, shape change, or visible damage | A bulge, split casing, deformation, crushed housing, or other physical damage | Stop using and charging it; keep it away from normal use and arrange hazardous-waste advice |
| Excessive or unusual heat | The unit becomes too hot, overheats, or grows hotter instead of cooling normally | Disconnect it if this can be done safely and stop using or charging it |
| Leakage, venting, or odor | Liquid, a hissing or venting battery, fumes, or an unusual smell | Do not touch leaked material; stop use and seek local hazardous-waste instructions |
| Other abnormal changes | Discoloration, odd noises, or another sudden change in behavior or appearance | Stop using it rather than testing it again |
These are practical groupings of symptoms identified by safety agencies, not an official four-item diagnostic test. A power bank does not become safe because one of the other signs is absent.

1. Swelling, shape change, or visible damage
A raised section, a casing that no longer sits flat, a seam opening, or any new change in shape is a stop-use warning. The ACCC says never to use a power bank that is damaged or swelling. Physical damage can affect the cells and protective layers inside, even when the device still appears to charge a phone.

Do not press a bulge flat, pierce the casing, clamp it, or continue charging it to see whether the shape returns to normal. Those actions can damage the cell further. A crushed, cracked, or heat-damaged enclosure should be treated with the same caution as obvious swelling.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) documented this risk in its May 15, 2025 warning for the Yiisonger KT-D007. The agency reported 79 reports involving that named product exploding, igniting, or swelling, including one serious fire with reported property damage of $15 million. That figure describes reports about the KT-D007; it is not a failure rate for power banks generally.
2. Excessive or unusual heat
Stop using a power bank if it becomes too hot, overheats, or develops heat that is unusual for its normal operation. Disconnect charging and move away from the device if doing so is safe. Do not keep it under a pillow, in a pocket, inside luggage, or against other heat-producing equipment while you decide what to do.

Warmth alone does not prove a failure. Charging and power conversion can produce some heat, and neither the ACCC nor the NFPA guidance reviewed here defines a universal temperature threshold for a power bank. Judge the change against the unit’s normal behavior: heat that is excessive, rapidly increasing, accompanied by a smell or noise, or still present after charging stops warrants retirement.
Never cool a suspect battery with water or put it in a freezer. If it is smoking or burning, leave the area immediately and follow the emergency instructions below rather than trying to diagnose the cause.
3. Leakage, venting, or an unusual odor
Visible liquid, a battery that appears to be venting gas, hissing, or an unfamiliar chemical smell are direct reasons to stop using the power bank. The ACCC lists leakage and venting as stop-use conditions, and the NFPA includes odor in its warning signs.

Avoid touching leaked material or trying to wipe it up. Keep people and pets away, ventilate only if that can be done without approaching an unsafe device, and ask your local household hazardous-waste service how it wants the item handled. Do not place the unit in a household bin or ordinary recycling container.

4. Discoloration, odd noises, and other abnormal changes
The NFPA’s 2025 Lithium-Ion Battery Safety tip sheet says: “Stop using the battery if you notice these problems: odor, change in color, too much heat, change in shape, leaking, or odd noises.” A darkened or blistered area, a new rattle, crackling, popping, or another unexplained sound should therefore end normal use.

Abnormal behavior also includes a sudden change that accompanies these signs, such as the casing changing color near a port or the device making noise while charging. Do not repeatedly plug and unplug it to reproduce the symptom. Record the model and, if it can be done without handling a dangerous device, note what happened for a retailer, manufacturer, regulator, or waste facility.
What to do immediately after a warning sign appears
- Stop charging and discharging. Unplug the power bank and disconnect the phone or other device. If the unit is hot, smoking, leaking, or visibly damaged, do not handle it merely to obtain a better position.
- Create distance without taking unnecessary risks. Keep people, pets, paper, fabrics, and other combustible materials away. Do not put a suspect battery in a drawer, bag, car, or other enclosed space.
- Escalate a fire or smoke event. ACCC guidance for Australia is to evacuate, close doors to slow the spread if that is safe, and call Triple Zero (000). The number 000 is Australia-specific; elsewhere, call the local emergency service. Do not re-enter for the power bank or attempt a risky extinguishing operation.
- Identify the exact product. Write down the brand, model, serial information, and purchase details only if you can do so safely. The exact model matters for recall checks and disposal instructions.
- Arrange specialist disposal. Contact a local household-hazardous-waste facility before traveling there and ask whether it accepts defective or recalled lithium-ion batteries. If it does not, contact your municipality for its instructions.
Check recalls by exact brand and model
A recall or safety warning applies to specific products, dates, and jurisdictions. Search the CPSC recall and warning database, your national product-safety regulator, and the manufacturer’s current safety notices using the complete model designation; do not assume every product from a brand is affected.

How to dispose of a defective or recalled power bank
Do not put a defective or recalled lithium-ion power bank in household trash or ordinary recycling. Batteries can be crushed or punctured in collection and sorting equipment, creating a fire risk. CPSC notices for the products above direct consumers to contact a local household-hazardous-waste facility in advance. Ask whether it accepts defective or recalled lithium-ion batteries and what packaging or drop-off rules apply. If it does not, ask your municipality for the approved route.
Acceptance rules vary by location, so do not assume a retail battery box, electronics store, or curbside program can take a swollen, leaking, or recalled unit. Tell the facility that the battery is defective or recalled and describe any swelling, heat, leakage, or venting before transporting it. Follow the facility’s instructions rather than improvising a container or delivery method.
Choosing a replacement without repeating the risk
Replace the retired unit only after it has been taken out of service. A new purchase should be based on evidence about that exact model, not just a familiar logo or a high capacity number.
- Safety listing: NFPA recommends devices listed by a nationally recognized testing laboratory. Verify that the listing applies to the exact product and model, not merely to a charger family or a seller’s generic claim.
- Supplier: ACCC recommends reputable suppliers. Keep the receipt and model information so a future recall can reach you.
- Compatibility: Check the output, connector, charging protocol, and capacity against the phone, tablet, laptop, or other device you intend to power.
- Instructions: Follow the manufacturer’s charging, storage, inspection, and transport directions. Do not use a replacement in ways its instructions prohibit.
- Condition on arrival: Inspect the casing, ports, and seams before charging. Return or report a unit that arrives damaged, swollen, leaking, or unusually hot.
If you search online for an option such as a UL-listed USB-C power bank, verify the exact listing, model number, seller, and current availability. The general category or a marketplace label is not proof that a particular item has been independently certified.
Habits that reduce avoidable battery risk
- Charge and store the power bank on a hard, nonflammable surface with ventilation; do not cover it with bedding or clothing.
- Inspect it periodically for shape changes, casing damage, discoloration, odor, leakage, and unusual sounds.
- Use the cable, charger, and charging method specified by the manufacturer, and stop if charging behavior changes suddenly.
- Keep the unit away from extreme heat, direct sun, water, and impact.
- Do not leave a suspect or recalled unit connected overnight or unattended while waiting for disposal advice.
None of these practices makes a visibly damaged, overheating, leaking, or otherwise abnormal power bank safe to keep using. The correct response to a warning sign is retirement and approved disposal.
