Reimage or reinstall your computer when a serious operating-system problem persists after less disruptive repairs, when malware symptoms continue after a security scan, or when you want a genuinely clean start. A computer that merely feels slow is not, by itself, a reason to wipe it: diagnose the cause first, because reinstalling can erase apps, settings, and—depending on the method—personal files.

What “reimage” can mean

People use “reimage” to describe several different procedures. Before you proceed, identify which one you mean: the amount of data and software it removes varies considerably.

Option What it does What it keeps
Windows repair reinstall Reinstalls the current Windows version to address system problems. Microsoft says this option can retain personal files, apps, and settings. Availability depends on the Windows recovery options shown on your device. Microsoft’s repair-reinstall guidance
Windows Reset this PC: Keep my files Reinstalls Windows while retaining personal files. Personal files stay, but installed apps and settings are removed. Microsoft’s reset guidance
Windows Reset this PC: Remove everything Reinstalls Windows and removes personal files, apps, and settings. Nothing from those categories is retained. This is the more suitable reset path if you are preparing to give away or sell the PC, but it should not be mistaken for a certified secure-erasure standard. Microsoft’s reset guidance
Windows clean install from installation media Installs Windows from external media; choosing the clean-install path removes the contents of the selected drive. Do not expect files, apps, or settings on that drive to remain. Microsoft’s recovery options
macOS reinstall from Recovery Reinstalls macOS through macOS Recovery. Apple says the ordinary reinstall does not remove apps or personal data, though it recommends backing up first. Erasing the startup disk is a separate, destructive action. Apple’s macOS reinstall guidance

Because these options have different consequences, do not start a procedure based only on a page or instruction that says “reimage.” Confirm its exact reset, reinstall, or erase option before accepting prompts.

When to reimage—and what to try first

Choose the least disruptive option that fits the cause. Microsoft’s Windows recovery guidance presents repair and recovery choices before Reset this PC in relevant cases, describing Reset as “the most disruptive” option. See Microsoft’s recovery options.

Situation Start with When reinstalling or resetting makes sense
A problem began after a particular Windows update Try removing the update or another relevant recovery option. Microsoft lists update removal among options that do not affect personal files or apps. Move on if the issue remains and narrower repairs do not resolve it.
Windows is unstable or has persistent software trouble Run a suitable troubleshooter and consider available repair or restore options. Consider Reset after less disruptive options fail; pick the retention setting according to whether you need to keep personal files.
Malware may be involved Run a scan with Windows Security. If the problem continues, Microsoft recommends reinstalling from installation media and choosing the clean-install option. It can help remove malware from the Windows installation, but it is not a guarantee against every possible threat.
A Mac starts to a flashing question-mark folder Start macOS Recovery and follow Apple’s startup-disk guidance. The symbol indicates that the startup disk is unavailable or does not contain a working macOS. Reinstall macOS if the question mark returns; use Disk Utility if disk repair is needed. Erasing the disk is separate from reinstalling.
You are selling or giving away a computer Use the device’s erase or reset procedure rather than a keep-files reinstall. Choose a path that removes your data. On Windows, Microsoft cautions that the consumer “Clean data” option is not a government or industry erasure standard.

If the computer is just slow

Slowness alone does not establish that the operating system needs to be reinstalled. Check for an update-related problem, try appropriate troubleshooting, and consider whether the symptom points to another cause. If the computer remains slow after a clean install, investigate hardware and device-specific causes rather than repeating the reinstall: software cannot fix physical storage failure.

Choose a Windows reset source carefully

If you decide to use Reset this PC, Windows offers different ways to obtain installation files. Which choice makes sense depends on whether local system files are usable and whether your internet connection is reliable.

  • Local reinstall: Uses files already on the PC and may be faster on a slow connection. It may not include the latest updates.
  • OEM recovery media: A device maker’s recovery media may include hardware-specific drivers and factory applications that generic Windows installation media does not.

These choices concern the source of installation files; they do not change the need to select the appropriate data-retention option.

A reinstall can create substantial recovery work if you discover afterward that a file, key, or application detail is missing. Complete these checks before starting:

  1. Back up important files. Copy irreplaceable files to a separate location and confirm that the backup opens from another device or location. Microsoft explicitly advises backing up important files before resetting. Microsoft’s reset instructions
  2. Find the BitLocker recovery key if the Windows device is encrypted. Keep it accessible before entering recovery, where you may be prompted for it.
  3. Make a reinstall list. Record the apps you use, their license or sign-in details, Wi-Fi credentials, and any device-specific drivers you may need after a clean install.
  4. Plan for installation media if needed. Microsoft directs users creating Windows installation media on USB to use another working PC. In a clean install, the selected drive is wiped, so verify which drive is selected before proceeding. Microsoft’s recovery options
  5. Keep the computer powered as required by the platform instructions. A reset screen can remain black for an extended period; Microsoft warns that manually restarting the PC during this process can cause the reset to fail. Microsoft’s reset instructions

Windows and Mac details that affect the decision

Windows 10 and Windows 11

Microsoft’s reset guidance covers Windows 10 and Windows 11. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says that after that date it no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. Before reinstalling an older Windows release, check support status and whether your particular hardware is eligible for an upgrade. Microsoft’s reset and support guidance

macOS

Reinstalling macOS through Recovery is distinct from erasing the startup disk. Recovery behavior and the macOS versions available depend on the Mac, so follow Apple’s model-specific instructions. If a question-mark folder appears, use Apple’s startup-disk guidance to diagnose it rather than assuming that erasing the disk is the first step. After the reinstall

  • Install operating-system updates.
  • Reinstall only applications you trust, using their legitimate installers or official sources.
  • Restore files selectively from your backup rather than bringing back programs or files you suspect caused the original problem.
  • If the same failures continue after a clean install, investigate hardware or device-specific causes instead of repeatedly reinstalling the operating system.
