Reboot your router for a temporary connection problem; factory-reset it only when troubleshooting has failed, you need a fresh setup, or you are handing the device back. A reboot briefly interrupts service but keeps your settings. A factory reset erases custom settings and leaves the network offline until you set it up again.

Reboot or factory-reset: which does your router need?

These actions are not interchangeable. A reboot powers the router off and back on, refreshing its connection while ordinarily preserving its configuration. A factory reset restores default settings and removes custom configuration. Linksys recommends rebooting first and resetting only if the problem persists (Linksys support).

Action What it changes What to expect
Reboot Restarts the router; saved settings ordinarily remain. A brief interruption while the router reconnects.
Factory reset Returns the router to default configuration and erases custom settings. You must configure the network again and reconnect devices.

When should you reboot your router?

Try a reboot when several devices suddenly lose internet, a connection glitch appears temporary, or your ISP or router maker asks you to restart equipment during troubleshooting. It is also a reasonable step after checking cables and status lights. Use the instructions for your equipment: a Google Android Help example says to unplug the home router, wait for its lights to go out, leave it unplugged for 30 seconds, reconnect it, and wait for the lights to return (Google Android Help). That timing is an example, not a universal rule.

When is a factory reset appropriate?

  • Router-specific problems continue after basic checks and a reboot.
  • You deliberately want to start the network configuration over.
  • You have forgotten the router administrator password and the manufacturer’s guidance identifies reset as the remedy.
  • You are returning, transferring, or handing off the equipment.

A factory reset is not the routine fix for a slow connection, and it cannot repair an ISP outage. If several devices remain offline after a reboot or the modem/router indicators suggest the upstream connection is down, check your provider’s outage information or contact support instead (Google Fi Wireless Help).

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

Check the scope of the problem before resetting

  1. Test another device. If only one device cannot connect, check its Wi-Fi setting, connection, and distance from the router before changing the whole network. Apple likewise advises comparing other devices when diagnosing Wi-Fi trouble (Apple Support).
  2. Check Wi-Fi and range. Confirm Wi-Fi is enabled on the affected device and try moving closer. If your router has separate supported frequency bands, testing another band can help isolate the issue.
  3. Inspect cables and lights. Make sure connections are secure and compare the equipment’s status lights with its manual. Google Fi’s guidance includes checking cables and indicators when troubleshooting (Google Fi Wireless Help).
  4. Restart equipment as directed. Follow the ISP or manufacturer’s sequence for modem and router, then allow them time to reconnect.
  5. Check for an upstream outage. If all devices are still offline, contact the ISP or check its service channel. Resetting the router will not fix a service interruption beyond your home network.
  6. Consider factory reset only for persistent router-specific trouble. Consult the exact model’s support guidance and preserve settings first.

Prepare before a factory reset

A reset may take your network offline until setup is complete. Before proceeding, record the information you need to restore service:

  • Wi-Fi network name (SSID) and password
  • Router administrator login
  • ISP account credentials or special WAN settings, if required
  • Static IP details, port forwarding, parental controls, guest Wi-Fi, and other custom settings you rely on

Back up the configuration file if the router supports it. If the equipment came from your ISP or your connection requires account credentials or special settings, ask the provider what you will need after reset. AT&T advises recording custom settings before restoring a Wi-Fi gateway to its original settings (AT&T support).

How to reboot or reset safely

Reboot

Use the router’s app or web interface if it offers a restart control, or follow the model’s documented power-cycle procedure. If you have a separate modem, use the ISP or equipment instructions for the correct restart sequence. Wait for the connection lights to settle before testing again.

Factory reset

Use the documented reset option in the router’s app or web interface, or the physical reset button specified for your exact model and hardware revision. Button locations and hold times vary. TP-Link’s instructions for covered models say to hold the reset button for more than 10 seconds; that is not a universal duration (TP-Link support). Verizon publishes a different procedure for its equipment (Verizon Router FAQs). Afterward, follow the device’s setup instructions, restore the settings you recorded, reconnect devices, and add mesh points or app-managed equipment again if needed.

Will resetting delete my Wi-Fi name and password?

A reboot ordinarily keeps your network name and password. A factory reset erases custom settings, which can include the Wi-Fi name and password, so you will need to configure them again. Your devices may then need to reconnect; Google’s guidance for Nest and Wifi devices explains that factory reset removes settings and requires setup afterward (Google Home and Nest Help).

How long should I hold the reset button?

There is no universal hold time. Check the manual or official support page for your router’s exact model and hardware revision before pressing the button. A timing instruction published for one product family should not be assumed to work for another.
