Install winter tires before temperatures regularly fall below 7°C and before your first snow or icy commute. Transport Canada says summer and all-season tires begin losing elasticity below that temperature, while winter tires remain flexible in colder conditions.

Remove winter tires only after persistent cold, snow and ice have passed and weather is consistently warm on the routes you drive. There is no universal spring date: local law, elevation, overnight lows and road conditions can change the correct timing.

The practical answer: use conditions, not the calendar alone

A calendar date is only a planning aid. Your changeover decision should combine four things: regular air temperatures, likely snow and ice, the roads and elevations you travel, and the rules where the vehicle is registered and driven.

Decision Practical trigger Why it matters
Install winter tires Temperatures regularly approach or fall below 7°C, especially on morning and overnight drives Transport Canada says summer and all-season tires begin to lose elasticity and traction below 7°C, while winter tires retain flexibility at lower temperatures. Transport Canada
Remove winter tires Winter weather has ended and temperatures are consistently warm, with no likely snow or ice on your routes Warm, dry roads can increase wear and reduce the dry-road performance of winter tires. Colorado’s transportation department advises removal at winter’s end or when the weather becomes consistently warm. Colorado Department of Transportation

The 7°C point is a rule of thumb, not a sudden performance cliff and not a legal changeover date. A brief warm afternoon does not necessarily mean it is time to remove the tires if freezing nights or late-season storms remain likely.

Why the 7°C guideline is useful

Winter tires use tread compounds designed to remain flexible in cold conditions. Transport Canada summarizes the reason plainly: “At temperatures below 7°C, all-season and summer tires begin to lose elasticity, leading to less traction.” Winter tires are intended to preserve grip as temperatures fall further.

That does not mean every tire changes behavior at exactly 7°C. The threshold helps you schedule service before cold-weather driving becomes routine. Consider the temperatures at the times you actually drive, not just the afternoon high shown in a forecast. A vehicle used at dawn on shaded roads may need winter tires earlier than one driven only in warm afternoons.

Think of 7°C as a planning signal. If mornings are repeatedly near that level, arrange the appointment even when the pavement is still dry. Waiting for visible snow can leave you making the first cold, slippery trip on tires that are no longer suited to the temperature.

When should you install winter tires?

Plan before the first storm

Do not wait for the first major snowfall. Appointment queues fill quickly, and the first storm can arrive while roads are still clear at home. Schedule installation when forecasts and recent mornings show a sustained trend toward temperatures near or below 7°C.

Installing ahead of time also gives you a chance to replace a tire that fails inspection, obtain the correct size, or resolve a pressure-monitoring problem without an emergency appointment. If you wait until a storm warning, the available shop may be far away or may not have the correct matched set.

Account for route and elevation

Mountain passes, northern routes, bridges and shaded roads can freeze while a nearby town remains above freezing. If you commute between regions, use the colder or higher-risk part of the journey when choosing your installation date. Include regular trips, not only your driveway and local streets. An overnight shift, early school run or weekend trip over a pass can expose you to winter conditions before the forecast for your home community changes.

Separate weather planning from legal compliance

A temperature-based decision does not replace local law. Some jurisdictions specify dates, approved markings or vehicle categories. Install early enough to comply with the law and early enough for the conditions you will encounter. If you cross a border, check both jurisdictions; the rules that apply at home may not satisfy the authority where you are traveling.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Allow time for a complete inspection

Installing early gives you time to discover a damaged tire, incorrect wheel, failed pressure sensor or unsuitable tread depth before severe weather arrives. Verify the vehicle’s required tire size, load index and speed rating before ordering or mounting anything. Keep the vehicle placard and owner’s manual available because a tire that physically fits may still have an unsuitable load or speed rating.

When can you remove winter tires?

Wait for consistently warm conditions

Remove winter tires after winter’s persistent cold, snow and ice have passed and temperatures remain reliably warm. A single warm week is not enough if your area commonly experiences late freezes or spring snow. Examine overnight lows as well as daytime highs, and consider whether your route includes shaded roads, bridges or higher elevations that stay icy longer.

Use a local spring pattern rather than a fixed date

Québec advises waiting a few weeks after March 15 before installing summer or all-season tires because spring conditions vary. That guidance illustrates why a legal end date and a safe practical changeover date are not always identical. Read the current rule for your jurisdiction and then consider your forecast, route and overnight lows.

Colorado’s transportation department similarly advises removing winter tires at winter’s end or when weather becomes consistently warm. The useful test is not whether one afternoon feels like spring, but whether the cold-weather risk has ended for the driving you actually do.

Do not leave winter tires on through warm weather unnecessarily

A Tesla Model X owner’s manual warns that winter tires can have shorter tread life and less traction on dry roads. This is a vehicle-manufacturer example, not a quantified result for every tire or vehicle, but it reflects the basic tradeoff: a cold-weather compound is not optimized for prolonged warm, dry driving.

Removal is therefore a balance. Changing too early can expose you to a late storm; changing too late can accelerate wear and compromise dry-road behavior. When conditions are uncertain, ask a qualified tire professional to assess the forecast, tread and your routes rather than treating a calendar date as decisive.

Jurisdiction-specific rules: examples, not universal dates

Legal requirements differ by country, province, state, vehicle class and road conditions. Check the transport authority for the place where your vehicle is registered and for every jurisdiction in which you drive.

Jurisdiction Rule or guidance Important qualification
Québec Most vehicles registered in Québec must have winter tires from December 1 through March 15 inclusive. The government lists exceptions and recommends waiting a few weeks after March 15 before fitting summer or all-season tires. See the current Québec requirements.
Sweden For specified light vehicles, winter tires or equivalent equipment are required from December 1 through March 31 when winter road conditions exist. Winter conditions mean snow, ice, slush or frost on any part of the road; police determine whether conditions apply on a particular road. Heavy vehicles have separate requirements. See Transportstyrelsen.

Neither example creates a universal rule for another region. A date in one jurisdiction may be irrelevant elsewhere, and a temperature cue never overrides a mandatory legal period. Rules can also change, so use the current authority page rather than relying on an old social-media post, shop sign or previous year’s date.

Choose a safe, compatible winter set

Use four matching tires

Transport Canada recommends using the same type, size, speed rating and load index on all four wheels, as required by the vehicle and tire specifications. Mixing winter and non-winter tires can make the vehicle less stable, particularly when traction differs between axles.

  • Confirm the tire size listed on the vehicle placard and owner’s manual.
  • Match the required load index and speed rating; do not assume a visually similar tire is suitable.
  • Install a complete set of four rather than changing only the driven axle.
  • For severe snow conditions, look for the 3-peak mountain snowflake symbol. Transport Canada identifies this marking for tires that meet specified snow-traction performance requirements.

The snowflake marking is a useful performance designation, not a substitute for checking size, load, speed rating or local legal requirements. An all-season label alone does not establish that a tire meets a severe-snow requirement.

Check wheel and vehicle compatibility

Use the owner’s manual for wheel dimensions, approved tire sizes, directional-tire orientation and pressure-monitoring requirements. If you use a separate winter wheel set, confirm that the wheels clear the brakes and that the monitoring system can recognize the sensors.

Directional tires must point in the indicated direction of rotation. After mounting, check that no warning light remains and follow the manual’s procedure for relearning or resetting pressure sensors. If a light returns, do not assume it is a harmless seasonal message; have the system checked.

Inspect tread before installation and removal

Measure more than one point

Check tread across the width of each tire and at several locations around its circumference. Uneven wear can indicate alignment, suspension or inflation problems even when one section appears acceptable. A tread-depth gauge is inexpensive and practical for a home check, but a professional tire shop can inspect the complete set.

Apply the correct threshold with its source

  • Transport Canada says not to use winter tires with less than 4 mm of tread on snow-covered roads. Its guidance is a safety recommendation, not a claim that every jurisdiction uses 4 mm as a legal limit.
  • Québec recommends at least 4.8 mm of tread for winter use in its tire-condition guidance. That figure is Québec’s recommendation and should not be presented as a universal standard. See the provincial guidance.

These figures are not interchangeable legal standards. Use the applicable authority’s rule and the tire maker’s replacement guidance, and replace sooner if the tire is damaged or wearing unevenly.

Replace a tire when it is below the applicable recommendation, damaged, aged beyond the manufacturer’s guidance, or worn unevenly. Measure before storing and again before reinstalling because damage can occur while a set is off the vehicle. Check for cuts, bulges, exposed cords, punctures, embedded objects and cracking in the sidewall or tread.

Check pressure when the tires are cold

Cold weather lowers tire pressure. A reading taken in a warm garage may not represent pressure after the vehicle has been parked outdoors in freezing temperatures. Check pressure when the tires are cold and use the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended value, normally shown on the door-jamb placard or in the owner’s manual.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not inflate to the maximum pressure molded into the tire sidewall unless the vehicle maker specifically calls for it. That number is a tire limit, not usually the vehicle’s normal setting. Seasonal temperature changes make regular checks important; pressure can drop as outdoor temperatures fall even when the tire has no leak.

After installation, check all four tires and the spare if applicable. Confirm that valve caps are fitted, that there are no leaks, and that the tire-pressure monitoring system reports normally. Recheck pressure after the vehicle has sat outside in colder weather rather than relying on the installer’s indoor reading.

Seasonal changeover checklist

  1. Confirm the timing. Review recent and forecast temperatures, overnight lows, snow and ice risk, your routes and local legal dates.
  2. Verify fitment. Match tire type, size, load index and speed rating to the vehicle specifications.
  3. Inspect the set. Measure tread in multiple locations; look for cuts, bulges, exposed cords, embedded objects and uneven wear.
  4. Check the marking. For severe-snow use, verify the 3-peak mountain snowflake symbol where required or appropriate.
  5. Mount all four tires. Keep the set matched and install directional tires in the indicated direction of rotation.
  6. Set cold pressure. Inflate to the vehicle maker’s recommended pressure, not the maximum printed on the tire sidewall.
  7. Verify systems. Confirm pressure-monitoring alerts clear and that no warning light remains after driving as specified by the owner’s manual.
  8. Recheck after driving. Inspect for leaks, vibration, pulling or unusual noise and have problems corrected promptly.

Store the tires correctly between seasons

Transportstyrelsen advises storing tires in a cold, dry and dark place. Before storage, label each tire by wheel position if that helps you maintain an appropriate rotation pattern, and record tread depth so you can compare it next season.

  • Keep tires away from direct sunlight, heat sources, moisture and chemicals that the tire maker warns can damage rubber.
  • Follow the tire manufacturer’s instructions for stacking, standing, bagging and storing mounted versus unmounted tires.
  • Use a professional storage service if you cannot provide a cool, dry, dark location or safely handle the wheels.

The official guidance does not establish one storage method for every tire construction or storage system. Manufacturer instructions take precedence for your specific tire. Keep the set where it will not be crushed, exposed to solvents or forgotten until the next season. A simple label and written tread record can prevent installing a tire on the wrong corner or overlooking a problem.

Winter versus all-season or summer tires

Consideration Winter tires All-season or summer tires
Cold-weather flexibility Designed to retain flexibility and grip at lower temperatures. Transport Canada says summer and all-season tires begin losing elasticity below 7°C.
Snow qualification Look for the 3-peak mountain snowflake symbol when severe-snow performance is needed. Do not assume an all-season label means the tire meets a severe-snow requirement.
Warm, dry roads A Tesla Model X manual gives shorter tread life and less dry-road traction as possible winter-tire tradeoffs. Designed for warmer conditions; suitability still depends on the specific tire and local weather.
Legal compliance May be required during dates or road conditions set by local authorities. May not satisfy a jurisdiction’s winter-tire or approved-marking rules.
Condition and upkeep Still requires adequate tread, matching, correct pressure and damage checks. Also requires inspection; the seasonal label alone does not determine safety.

These are decision axes, not a promise that one category is always superior. Choose equipment that matches the cold, snow, road surface, vehicle and legal requirements you actually face. If your driving is mostly warm-weather highway travel, the warm-road tradeoff may matter more; if you routinely face snow, ice or cold dawns, winter flexibility and the snowflake designation may matter more.

Common timing mistakes and what to do

Waiting for the first snowfall

By the first storm, temperatures may already be below the point at which summer and all-season compounds lose elasticity. Book before the storm and allow time for inspection or replacement.

Removing immediately after the legal end date

A legal period can end while freezing nights or late snow remain possible. Follow the authority’s spring guidance and wait for consistently warm conditions on your routes.

Changing only two tires

Different traction levels between axles can reduce stability. Use a matched set of four with the specifications required for your vehicle.

Trusting a warm-garage pressure reading

Recheck pressure cold, outdoors when practical, and adjust to the vehicle maker’s recommendation.

Ignoring tread variation

A tire can meet a measurement at one spot while being dangerously worn elsewhere. Measure across the tread and around the tire, then investigate uneven wear.

Assuming another region’s rule applies to you

Québec’s December-to-March requirement and Sweden’s condition-based rule demonstrate how different laws can be. Consult your own transport authority before relying on a date or marking.

Buying by label alone

“Winter” or “all-season” does not answer every fitment question. Confirm the complete specification, the snowflake marking where appropriate, and the condition of the actual tires you will install.

When professional help is the safer option

Use a qualified tire shop when you lack the equipment to lift the vehicle safely, cannot verify wheel compatibility, find uneven or rapid wear, need pressure sensors programmed, or see sidewall damage, bulges or exposed cords. Ask the technician to document tread depth, inflation pressure and any alignment or suspension concern so the next seasonal inspection starts with a useful record.

Professional help is also sensible when you are changing a set stored on separate wheels and cannot confirm the correct rotation direction, when a vehicle pulls or vibrates after installation, or when a pressure warning persists. Do not continue driving on a visibly damaged tire while waiting for a seasonal appointment.

For vehicle-specific limits, directional mounting, pressure-monitoring procedures and approved tire sizes, the owner’s manual remains the controlling reference. For legal dates, exceptions and markings, use the current transport authority guidance for your jurisdiction.

Frequently overlooked questions

Should I install winter tires exactly at 7°C? No. Transport Canada’s below-7°C guidance is a planning cue, not an abrupt switch or universal legal trigger. Install before cold mornings and likely snow or ice become routine.

Can I remove them on March 15? Only if that timing is safe and lawful for your situation. Québec’s mandatory period ends March 15 for most vehicles, but the province recommends waiting a few weeks because spring weather varies.

Is 4 mm the legal minimum everywhere? No. Transport Canada advises not using winter tires below 4 mm on snow-covered roads, while Québec recommends at least 4.8 mm. Check the rule and recommendation that apply where you drive.

Do I need four winter tires on an all-wheel-drive vehicle? Transport Canada recommends a matched set of four. All-wheel drive does not eliminate differences in braking and cornering traction between axles.

Does the snowflake symbol guarantee safe driving? No. The 3-peak mountain snowflake identifies tires meeting specified snow-traction performance requirements, but tread condition, pressure, road conditions and driving behavior still matter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I store tires anywhere indoors? Transportstyrelsen advises a cold, dry and dark place. Follow the tire maker’s instructions for stacking, bagging and mounted or unmounted storage, and avoid heat, sunlight, moisture and damaging chemicals.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I put winter tires on?

Plan installation before temperatures regularly approach or fall below 7°C and before the first likely snow or icy commute. Use the colder parts of your route and overnight lows, not only afternoon temperatures.

When can I take winter tires off?

Remove them after persistent cold, snow and ice have passed and conditions are consistently warm on your routes. A legal end date is not necessarily the safest practical changeover date.

Is 7°C a legal requirement?

No. Transport Canada presents below 7°C as a practical temperature guideline. Local laws may instead set dates, approved markings, vehicle categories or road-condition requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do all four tires need to match?

Yes. Transport Canada recommends the same type, size, speed rating and load index on all four wheels, as required by the vehicle and tire specifications.

What tread depth is enough for winter?

Transport Canada says not to use winter tires below 4 mm on snow-covered roads. Québec recommends at least 4.8 mm. Treat these as attributed guidance, not one universal legal threshold.

Why check pressure when tires are cold?

Cold temperatures lower pressure, and a warm-garage reading may not reflect outdoor conditions. Use the vehicle maker’s recommended pressure and recheck after the vehicle sits outside.

Are winter tires required in Québec and Sweden?

Most Québec-registered vehicles require them from December 1 through March 15, subject to exceptions. In Sweden, specified light vehicles require winter tires or equivalent equipment from December 1 through March 31 when winter road conditions exist.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I leave winter tires on all year?

It is not ideal. A Tesla Model X manual notes possible shorter tread life and less dry-road traction with winter tires. Remove them when conditions are consistently warm, following local rules and manufacturer guidance.

The Bottom Line

Install a matched set of four winter tires before regular temperatures fall below 7°C and before snow or ice reaches your routes. Remove them only after winter risk has passed and warmth is consistent. Check local law, tread depth, cold pressure, fitment and the owner’s manual every season; dates and recommendations vary by jurisdiction and vehicle.
