Clear your Xbox Series X cache as a troubleshooting step when you’re dealing with freezes, loading errors, or connectivity problems—not on a weekly or monthly schedule. The cited Xbox Series X|S support guidance gives no routine maintenance interval.
When should you clear the cache?
Try clearing it when a game freezes, fails to load, or has connectivity trouble. Rockstar Games Customer Support and Activision Support describe cache clearing as troubleshooting, not scheduled upkeep. Neither source specifies a recurring interval or promises that clearing cache will fix every problem.
How to clear the system cache
- Shut down the Xbox Series X using the console’s power button.
- Unplug the console’s power cord and leave it unplugged for two minutes.
- Reconnect the cord and turn the console back on.
Rockstar Games Customer Support’s instructions, last updated July 29, 2025, say this procedure does not affect saved games, but resets brightness and language settings. Activision Support also describes the two-minute unplugging method as an initial troubleshooting step for connection, freezing, and game-loading issues.
Is clearing persistent storage the same thing?
No. Support articles describe this as a separate cache-related procedure; they do not establish that it is identical to unplugging the console or that it clears every kind of cache.

- Press the Xbox button on your controller.
- Open your profile icon, then Settings.
- Go to Devices and connections > Blu-ray > Persistent Storage.
- Select Clear persistent storage.
The path is given by Rockstar Games Customer Support and Activision Support. Menu labels can vary by system software or region.
What “cache” means on Xbox
Cache can refer to different kinds of temporary or persistent storage; the term does not mean one universal store that a single consumer procedure necessarily empties. Microsoft’s Game Development Kit documentation distinguishes temporary local storage, which is guaranteed only while a title is running, from title-specific persistent local storage intended for non-save data such as cache. The documentation is for developers, not a consumer guide, and does not say what the Blu-ray menu option clears.

If the problem remains
Move to troubleshooting for the specific game, connection, or error code instead of repeating cache clearing as a guaranteed fix. Before hardware troubleshooting, Microsoft’s Series X Digital Console service guide advises checking for system updates. Its guidance is for the Series X Digital model; use the support instructions relevant to your console and issue.
