Choose a PostgreSQL-compatible database when a measured workload or operational requirement cannot be met acceptably by optimizing and scaling your current PostgreSQL deployment—not simply because your database has grown large. First identify the bottleneck, then try the least disruptive remedy that addresses it. Consider a distributed or managed alternative when you specifically need capabilities such as horizontal write scaling, data distribution across locations, or a read-pool model that your current architecture cannot provide at an acceptable cost or level of complexity.

There is no universal size at which PostgreSQL stops being the right choice

The decision is about workload and operating model, not a contest over theoretical database capacity. A database can be too slow or too costly for a particular application well before it approaches a documented hard limit. Conversely, a large database can remain workable if its queries, resources, and access patterns are well matched to its architecture.

PostgreSQL 16 documentation lists database size as “unlimited” and relation size as 32 TB when using the default 8192-byte block size. These are documented limits, not recommended targets or a promise that a workload will perform acceptably at those sizes. The PostgreSQL documentation explicitly notes that practical constraints—such as performance or available disk space—may matter first. In other words, neither the database-size entry nor the relation-size figure tells you when your application should migrate.

A better trigger is evidence that a specific requirement remains unmet after reasonable changes within PostgreSQL. That might be a write bottleneck on a single primary, a need to distribute data or writes across locations, or an operational need for a managed read-pool design. If you cannot name the constraint and explain why the proposed architecture addresses it, changing database platforms is premature.

Find the bottleneck before choosing a scaling path

Start with production measurements and workload profiling, not a product shortlist. Determine whether the pressure comes from CPU, memory, storage throughput or capacity, connection pressure, lock contention, slow queries, write volume, or read volume. Separate ordinary traffic from peaks, batch jobs, and analytical queries: a short-lived spike or an isolated reporting workload can call for a different response than sustained transactional demand.

There is no universal metric threshold that says a PostgreSQL deployment must be replaced. The useful question is whether a measured constraint is persistent, what part of the system causes it, and whether a less disruptive change can address it. Check that application behavior and query performance are understood before treating database architecture as the cause.

Match the pressure to the mechanism

Observed need First mechanism to evaluate What it does not solve by itself
Inefficient queries or avoidable writes Improve queries, indexes, batching, caching, and application behavior. It does not add distributed write capacity if the workload still exceeds the primary’s capacity.
A resource-bound single node Evaluate vertical capacity and storage changes. It does not distribute write work across multiple shards.
Read-heavy demand Consider read replicas or managed read pools, with suitable application routing. It does not, by itself, remove a single-primary write bottleneck.
Write-heavy demand that can be partitioned Test a sharded or distributed architecture. It does not eliminate the need to reason about partitioning, cross-partition work, transactions, and operations.
Data or serving requirements across locations Evaluate the candidate’s placement, consistency, and latency behavior against the application’s needs. “Multi-region” or “distributed” does not by itself establish the required consistency or application behavior.

The table is a starting point, not a prescription. A workload can have more than one bottleneck, and the remedy should target the one that limits the application rather than add architectural complexity for a different problem.

Scale PostgreSQL when the constraint is addressable locally

Fix avoidable work first

If profiling points to slow queries or unnecessary database activity, look for improvements in query shape, indexes, batching, caching, and application behavior. The objective is to reduce work the database does or make that work more efficient. This is often a less disruptive first move than changing the database architecture, particularly when the constraint is concentrated in a few queries or write patterns.

Validate the change against the actual workload. An index or cache may help one path but change storage needs, freshness, or behavior elsewhere; a workload test should check the outcome that matters rather than assume that adding a component improves the system overall.

Increase capacity for a single-node constraint

When CPU, memory, or storage is the limiting factor, evaluate whether vertical capacity or storage changes can meet the requirement. This keeps the existing single-primary model, so it may be appropriate when the remaining constraint is resource capacity rather than the inability to distribute writes. Compare the expected and peak workload with the capacity and cost of the proposed change; the sources do not establish a universal point at which vertical scaling becomes uneconomical.

Move eligible reads away from the primary

Read replicas and managed read pools can serve eligible reads away from the primary. They are not a write-scaling substitute: adding readers does not, by itself, remove a single-primary write bottleneck. The application must route only suitable queries to them, and the design must account for freshness requirements and replica lag.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A read replica is a fit only when the query can tolerate the consistency and freshness behavior of the chosen setup. Decide which reads need the latest committed state and which can use a replica; do not route every read away from the primary merely because replicas exist. AWS documents Aurora read replicas as a read-scaling option, while Google Cloud’s AlloyDB sizing guidance asks teams to size primary and read pools according to workload.

Do not mistake one large deployment for a universal benchmark

OpenAI’s January 22, 2026 engineering article, “Scaling PostgreSQL to power 800 million ChatGPT users,” describes a deployment with one primary and nearly 50 read replicas. It also reports that PostgreSQL load had grown by more than 10 times over the prior year. These are company-reported facts about OpenAI’s workload, not independent benchmarks or a capacity target for another organization.

The account is useful because it shows that very high read traffic does not automatically require replacing PostgreSQL. It also describes optimization and limiting new workloads on the existing deployment, so it should not be read as evidence that every application can use the same architecture or reach comparable capacity.

Consider a PostgreSQL-compatible service when the architecture is the constraint

A PostgreSQL-compatible service is worth evaluating when its particular scaling mechanism meets a requirement that your current deployment cannot meet acceptably. Compatibility is a product-specific claim, not proof that the service behaves exactly like PostgreSQL in every respect. The candidate must work with the SQL, extensions, transaction behavior, drivers, and operational tools your application actually depends on.

Horizontal write scaling for partitionable work

Sharding or distributed SQL can increase horizontal write capacity and distribute data. The case is strongest when the write-heavy work can be partitioned in a way that fits the application. Before committing, establish how data is assigned, whether queries can stay within a partition, and what the application must do when work crosses partitions. Also examine transaction behavior, constraints, consistency, failover, and recovery in the candidate’s specific design.

Distributed architecture brings questions that a single-node capacity change does not. Cross-partition queries or transactions may require coordination, and the application and operating model must account for that behavior. AWS describes Aurora PostgreSQL Limitless Database as a two-layer arrangement: routers accept client requests and route SQL to shards, which hold subsets of the database; routers also aggregate results and coordinate distributed transactions. This illustrates the architectural tradeoff, but does not establish that the service—or sharding generally—is suitable for a given workload.

OpenAI’s engineering article gives a concrete example of a workload-based choice. Bohan Zhang, Member of the Technical Staff at OpenAI, wrote on January 22, 2026: “To mitigate these limitations and reduce write pressure, we’ve migrated, and continue to migrate, shardable (i.e. workloads that can be horizontally partitioned), write-heavy workloads to sharded systems such as Azure Cosmos DB, optimizing application logic to minimize unnecessary writes.” The point is the workload qualification: OpenAI describes moving shardable, write-heavy workloads, not a general instruction to move all PostgreSQL workloads.

Data placement across locations

If the requirement is to distribute data or serve writes across locations, compare the actual data-placement and transaction model with the application’s geographic, latency, consistency, and resilience needs. Those requirements are related but not interchangeable. A design that places data in multiple locations still needs to be evaluated for the behavior that matters to users and for how the application operates during failure or recovery.

Do not treat a provider’s geographic feature list as proof that it meets your use case. Ask what is placed where, how writes and reads are handled, and what latency and consistency tradeoffs apply. Test the workflows the application must support rather than relying on the word “distributed.”

Managed read pools or separated compute and storage

A managed read-pool architecture may be attractive when the team’s constraint is operating read capacity, rather than scaling writes horizontally. Google documents AlloyDB for PostgreSQL with distributed compute and storage and optional read pools. Its sizing guidance asks teams to consider workload type, performance needs, data size, and growth. These product-specific features and planning guidance are not a cross-database benchmark or a universal guarantee of performance.

Management responsibility also varies by service and feature. Establish which work the provider handles and which remains yours, including application routing, capacity choices, monitoring, incident response, and recovery planning. A managed architecture can change the team’s operational burden; it does not make compatibility and workload validation unnecessary.

Compare candidates against the work your application must do

Use the same representative workload and requirements to compare continuing with PostgreSQL and moving to a compatible service. The decision should cover more than throughput: data and transaction behavior, compatibility, geography, resilience, and the effort required to operate and migrate all affect whether an option is acceptable.

Verify compatibility and migration costs before committing

“PostgreSQL-compatible” is not a complete compatibility specification. Make an inventory of the behaviors the application relies on, then verify each against the particular candidate. A service’s compatibility claims need to be checked against required functionality and migration impact rather than treated as assurance of identical behavior.

Build a compatibility inventory

  • SQL and schema: list the SQL features, schema assumptions, and index behavior your application uses.
  • Extensions and clients: identify required extensions, drivers, connection behavior, and any tooling tied to the current deployment.
  • Transactions: document transaction and isolation requirements, including work that may span partitions.
  • Operations: include backup and restore processes, monitoring, failover, and recovery objectives.
  • Migration changes: identify code, schema, routing, and operational changes the target requires.

Use this list to ask product-specific questions and to design a representative migration test. If a required extension or behavior is not established for the candidate, treat it as an open compatibility question—not as supported by default.

Test more than a clean benchmark

Build a representative test with the application’s meaningful query mix, write patterns, data shape, concurrency, and peak conditions. Include cross-partition operations if they are part of normal work. Check not only performance but correctness, freshness, transaction behavior, recovery, and the operational steps the team would need during an incident. A test that omits the application’s hardest requirements can make a migration look easier than it is.

Also validate current features, pricing, and regional availability for the specific service and configuration under consideration. No universal price or performance winner is established here; a result from one workload or one product’s planning material does not rank databases for another workload.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Count the full cost of the change

Compare total operating cost, not only a service’s headline charge. Account for engineering time, service charges, data transfer, additional replicas or shards, and the cost of managing or debugging distributed behavior. Include expected and peak load, and consider the migration work itself. A platform that meets a technical requirement may still be a poor choice if the engineering and operating cost outweigh the benefit.

A practical decision sequence

  1. Describe the symptom. State what is failing or becoming unacceptable—latency, capacity, recovery, geography, or operating effort—and when it occurs.
  2. Identify the limiting resource or behavior. Use production metrics and workload profiling to distinguish reads from writes and isolate resource, query, concurrency, or storage pressure.
  3. Choose the least disruptive matching remedy. Optimize avoidable work, evaluate node or storage capacity for a resource limit, and consider read pools for eligible read demand.
  4. Define the unmet requirement. If the local scaling path does not meet it, specify the capability needed, such as horizontal write capacity for partitionable work or data placement across locations.
  5. Evaluate a specific candidate. Verify its SQL, extensions, transactions, consistency, placement, failover, recovery, and operating responsibilities against the application inventory.
  6. Run a representative test and migration plan. Measure the outcomes that matter, include difficult workflows, and calculate total cost at expected and peak demand.
  7. Make the decision on evidence. Proceed only if the candidate’s benefits justify its compatibility, migration, and distributed-system costs.
