Run a portable air purifier for as long as you need cleaner air: higher fan speeds and longer operation filter more air, while a low speed filters less. For a cleaner-air room during wildfire smoke, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) gives a specific instruction: run a suitably sized cleaner continuously on its highest fan setting.

Place the unit in the room people use most, especially a room occupied by someone vulnerable to poor air quality. Keep the intake and outlet clear, size the machine by its clean air delivery rate (CADR), and treat a portable purifier as a way to improve one room or area rather than automatically clean an entire home.

How long should an air purifier run?

Ordinary day-to-day use

There is no single EPA schedule that fits every home, purifier, room, or pollutant. The governing principle is straightforward: higher fan speeds and longer run times increase the amount of air filtered. A low setting moves less air through the filter; running the unit for more hours partly compensates for that lower airflow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a schedule that keeps the cleaner operating when the room is occupied or when pollution is most likely. If dust, pet particles, cooking particles, or seasonal allergens are the concern, running the unit while those sources are present and for a period afterward can provide more filtration than switching it on only occasionally. The purifier cannot filter air while it is off, so an intermittent schedule always provides less total filtration than continuous operation at the same speed.

Noise matters because a theoretically powerful setting is useless if it makes people turn the unit off. EPA notes that a lower published noise rating can be useful when sound would prevent regular operation. In practice, a quieter medium setting used consistently may deliver more useful filtration over a day than a loud high setting used briefly.

During wildfire smoke

Wildfire smoke calls for the more specific cleaner-air-room guidance rather than a general household timetable. EPA recommends choosing a portable cleaner with sufficient smoke CADR and running it continuously on the highest fan setting. Use it in a room with doors and windows closed when it is safe to do so, while allowing air to flow freely around the machine.

This is smoke-event guidance, not a universal instruction to seal every home under all conditions. Follow local safety advice, especially if closing windows would create a different hazard. When smoke conditions ease, you can return to a quieter or shorter schedule appropriate to the room and the source of pollution.

Where should you put a portable air purifier?

Start with the room people actually use

Put the cleaner in the room where household members spend the most time. A portable unit is intended to deliver cleaner air to a room or defined area, so concentrating it where people breathe for many hours generally helps more than placing it in an empty hallway.

If someone in the household is especially vulnerable to poor air quality, prioritize that person’s room or the shared room where they spend time. This approach also makes sizing easier: you can match the CADR to one known space instead of trying to guess the requirements for an entire house.

Protect the airflow path

Keep curtains, furniture, bedding, boxes, and other objects from blocking the intake or outlet. The machine needs to draw room air through its filter and return treated air to the room; an obstruction reduces that circulation. Follow the product’s instructions for clearance because designs differ.

Floor and tabletop models can both be appropriate when used as designed. A tabletop unit should sit on a stable surface that does not cover its intake. A floor unit should not be wedged behind a sofa or pushed into a corner where its outlets cannot discharge air. If the outlet creates an uncomfortable draft, redirect the airflow away from people without covering the grille.

Placement for a smoke cleaner-air room

During wildfire smoke, keep the cleaner in the selected room with doors and windows closed when it is safe, and leave space around it so air can circulate freely. Do not assume that putting one unit near a central doorway will clean every room equally; air exchange between rooms is unpredictable, and portable cleaners are designed around the area they serve.

How to size a purifier with CADR

CADR, or clean air delivery rate, describes how quickly a cleaner delivers filtered air for particles. EPA recommends choosing a portable air cleaner with a CADR large enough for the room or area. The following estimated minimums assume an eight-foot ceiling:

Room area Estimated minimum CADR
100 square feet 65 cubic feet per minute (cfm)
200 square feet 130 cfm
300 square feet 195 cfm
400 square feet 260 cfm
500 square feet 325 cfm
600 square feet 390 cfm

These are estimates, not a guarantee of a particular particle concentration or health outcome. Higher ceilings contain more air, so a room taller than eight feet may need a higher CADR. Check the rating used for the pollutant you are targeting, since a product can publish separate CADR figures for smoke, dust, and pollen.

Open-plan rooms and multiple spaces

For an open floor plan, count the full area that the cleaner is expected to serve, not just the square footage around the machine. A 600-square-foot connected living, dining, and kitchen area should be evaluated as one area if there are no doors separating it. If one cleaner cannot provide enough CADR for that space, using multiple units can distribute filtration more effectively.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Closed bedrooms, offices, and other rooms are separate loads when doors usually remain closed. A purifier sized for a bedroom should not be described as covering an adjacent room simply because the door is open occasionally.

Wildfire-smoke sizing rule

For a cleaner-air room during wildfire smoke, EPA gives a separate rule: choose a unit with a tobacco-smoke CADR of at least two-thirds of the room area in square feet. For example, a 300-square-foot room calls for a tobacco-smoke CADR of at least 200 cfm under that smoke-specific rule. Do not treat this formula as interchangeable with the general estimated table; they address different use contexts.

CADR is for particles, not every pollutant

CADR measures particle removal. It does not by itself describe how well a machine removes gases or volatile organic compounds (VOCs). If odors, gases, or VOCs are the main concern, look for activated carbon or another filter material specifically intended for gas removal.

EPA notes that portable air cleaners do not have a widely used rating system for gas-removal performance. Activated carbon can be effective when there is a large amount of carbon or other sorbent material, but a thin carbon layer may offer limited capacity. Read the manufacturer’s filter description and replacement instructions rather than inferring gas performance from a particle CADR.

No portable cleaner removes every indoor pollutant. Source control remains important: repair moisture problems, reduce smoke at the source, ventilate when outdoor air is clean, and follow safety guidance for combustion appliances. A purifier supplements those steps; it does not make an unsafe source harmless.

A practical setup procedure

  1. Define the target. Decide whether you are addressing routine particles, a specific room, or wildfire smoke. Gas and odor concerns require checking for an appropriate sorbent, not just a high particle CADR.
  2. Select the room. Choose the room people occupy most, or the room used by a person particularly sensitive to poor air quality.
  3. Measure the area. Multiply length by width for each connected portion of an open area. Note whether the ceiling is higher than eight feet.
  4. Match the CADR. Use the general EPA estimates for ordinary particle filtration, or the two-thirds-of-area tobacco-smoke rule for a wildfire cleaner-air room.
  5. Place the unit correctly. Set it on a stable floor or tabletop appropriate for its design. Keep curtains and objects away from every intake and outlet.
  6. Set the fan. Use the highest setting when you need the most filtration. Select a quieter setting when noise would otherwise make you stop using the cleaner.
  7. Check the room after setup. Confirm that air can move around the unit and that the outlet is not creating an uncomfortable draft. During smoke, keep the selected room closed to outdoor air when safe and run the cleaner continuously on high.

Filters, maintenance, and central HVAC

Replace filters before they become overloaded

All filters need regular replacement. EPA warns that a dirty or overloaded filter will not work well. There is no single replacement interval that applies to every purifier because loading depends on the filter design, fan use, particle concentration, and household conditions. Follow the device and filter maker’s maintenance instructions, and use the model-compatible filter specified for the unit.

Check the filter indicator if the machine has one, but do not ignore visible damage, persistent odor, or a substantial drop in airflow. A replacement filter that fits physically but is not approved for the model can create sealing or airflow problems.

Using the home HVAC system

A central HVAC filter only filters air when the HVAC system’s fan is operating. EPA’s guide says such systems in most cases run less than 25% of the time during heating and cooling seasons; that is contextual information, not a guaranteed runtime for every home.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

EPA recommends MERV 13, or the highest-efficiency filter the system can accommodate. Check compatibility with the HVAC manufacturer or a qualified technician before installing a higher-resistance filter. An upgrade that the blower cannot handle can reduce system performance or create mechanical problems. A central filter can support whole-home circulation, while a portable cleaner can provide more targeted filtration in an occupied room.

How to compare air-cleaner options

When choosing between models, evaluate the details that determine whether you will get usable filtration:

Decision point What to verify Why it matters
Room coverage CADR matched to the room area, ceiling height, and intended pollutant An undersized unit moves too little filtered air for the space.
Particle versus gas needs Particle CADR plus activated carbon or another gas-targeted filter when needed Particle ratings do not establish gas or VOC removal.
Noise Published noise rating at speeds you can tolerate A quieter unit is more likely to remain on for longer periods.
Airflow and placement Clearance requirements and whether the unit fits the intended room Blocked intake or outlet reduces circulation.
Filter upkeep Compatible replacement filter and the maker’s maintenance schedule Availability and correct fit determine whether performance can be maintained.
Energy labeling ENERGY STAR status, if relevant to electricity use ENERGY STAR indicates energy efficiency, not air-cleaning effectiveness.

EPA does not endorse particular air-cleaner brands or models. Treat an efficiency label as an operating-cost signal, not as proof that a machine removes particles, gases, or smoke better than another model.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

  • Running only when the air looks dirty: Many particles are invisible. Use a consistent schedule tied to occupancy or known sources instead of relying on sight.
  • Using a bedroom-sized unit for an open living area: Recalculate the full connected floor area and compare it with the machine’s CADR.
  • Blocking the intake with furniture or curtains: Move the unit into open space while preserving the manufacturer’s required clearances.
  • Assuming a portable unit cleans the whole house: Treat it as a room or area cleaner unless multiple units or central circulation provide coverage elsewhere.
  • Choosing by a single headline number: Check the pollutant-specific CADR, ceiling height, noise at usable speeds, and filter type.
  • Installing a high-efficiency HVAC filter without checking compatibility: Confirm the system can accommodate MERV 13 or the proposed filter with the manufacturer or a technician.
  • Leaving a loaded filter in place: Replace it according to the device maker’s instructions; a clogged filter will not perform normally.
  • Expecting carbon to solve every odor: Gas filtration depends on the amount and type of sorbent and has no broadly standardized portable-cleaner rating.

Examples of sensible operating choices

A normal occupied bedroom

Measure the bedroom, choose a purifier whose relevant particle CADR meets the estimated requirement for that area, and place it where its intake and outlet remain clear. Run it while the room is occupied or for longer periods if more filtration is needed. If the highest setting is too loud for sleep, use a quieter setting that you can leave on consistently, recognizing that it filters less air per unit of time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A large open living area

Add the square footage of the connected living, dining, and kitchen spaces, account for a ceiling above eight feet, and compare that combined requirement with the cleaner’s CADR. If the capacity is inadequate, use more than one appropriately placed unit rather than assuming one machine will clean distant corners.

A wildfire-smoke episode

Designate a room with doors and windows that can be closed safely, select a unit whose tobacco-smoke CADR is at least two-thirds of the room area in square feet, and run it continuously on high. Keep air moving freely around the machine. When the smoke episode ends, reassess the schedule and fan speed based on occupancy, noise, and ordinary pollution sources.

What a purifier can—and cannot—do

A correctly sized, unobstructed cleaner operated for enough time can reduce airborne particles in the room it serves. More airflow through the filter generally means more filtered air. It cannot guarantee that every pollutant is removed, cannot substitute for fixing an indoor pollution source, and cannot turn a portable unit into a whole-home system by placement alone.

The most defensible routine is therefore practical rather than universal: put the cleaner where people are, size it with CADR, keep the airflow clear, operate it at the highest tolerable speed for the needed duration, and follow the specific continuous-high instruction during wildfire smoke events.
