Repair an old gadget when a reliable fix costs less than a suitable replacement over the years you expect to use it, restores the functions you actually need, and leaves the device safe and supported. Replace it when the diagnosis is uncertain, parts or skilled service are unavailable, several faults are appearing, or software support will end soon. There is no universal “repair if it costs less than X% of a new device” rule.
The decision is more than a repair quote versus a new-device price
A repair can look cheap until you add diagnosis, parts, labor, shipping, required tools, data recovery, and the possibility that opening the gadget exposes another fault. A replacement can look expensive until you include setup time, accessories, data transfer, subscriptions, and the fact that a very cheap model may not meet your needs.
Compare the complete cost and the usefulness each option buys. For the repair, estimate the total amount you will pay and the supported, dependable life remaining afterward. For replacement, compare a suitable new device and any equivalent refurbished model—not merely the cheapest product with a similar appearance.
The U.S. Federal Trade Commission’s practical repair checks are the product’s lifespan, how likely it is to fail, and how difficult it is to fix. Those checks are useful for a phone, laptop, tablet, game console, camera, router, appliance, or other electronics, but the answer still depends on the exact model, fault, location, and quote.

A five-step test for repair versus replacement
1. Check warranty, insurance, and other coverage first
Read the written warranty and any accidental-damage, retailer, credit-card, or insurance terms before paying a shop. Confirm:
- Whether the specific fault is covered.
- Whether labor, shipping, diagnosis, loan equipment, or a replacement unit is included.
- Whether you must use an authorized service provider.
- Whether the claim has a deductible, time limit, or proof-of-purchase requirement.
Coverage and claims processes differ, so the written terms control. FTC consumer guidance says that, in the United States, an in-warranty repair cannot be refused solely because an earlier independent repair was unrelated to the current covered issue. That is U.S.-specific guidance, not a rule to apply automatically in every country.
2. Get a diagnosis and a complete quote
Ask the technician to identify the failed component and to separate diagnosis from the repair price. A useful quote states:

- Whether the diagnostic fee is credited if you approve the work.
- What happens if another fault is found after opening the device.
- The repair warranty, including its duration and exclusions.
- The expected turnaround time and what happens if the part is back-ordered.
Ask how confident the diagnosis is. A shop that cannot test the suspected component may give you a low initial price that changes later. The FTC specifically highlights repair rates, waiting times, parts, tools, and diagnostic access as questions consumers should ask. When available, obtain both an authorized-service quote and an independent-shop quote; price is only one part of the comparison.
3. Check whether the repair is practical for this exact model
A fault can be technically repairable but impractical for you. Verify that the exact replacement part is available, genuine or appropriately specified, and priced acceptably. Check whether the model has a usable repair guide, special screws, adhesives, soldering requirements, battery-handling precautions, or post-repair calibration.

Design, documentation, parts supply, software access, and repair restrictions can turn a theoretically possible job into an unreliable one. If you are considering doing it yourself, identify the model number first, read a model-specific guide, and list every bit, pry tool, meter, adhesive, and safety item required. A precision electronics toolkit is useful only when its bits and opening tools match that guide; a generic kit is not universally compatible.
4. Estimate useful life after the repair
Ask what the repair actually restores. A new battery may return acceptable runtime, while a repaired charging port may not solve a failing motherboard. A screen replacement may make a phone usable again, but it will not add storage, modern cellular compatibility, or security updates.
For connected gadgets, check the manufacturer’s operating-system and security-support status. A hardware repair has limited value if the device will soon stop receiving security fixes or if essential apps will no longer run. Support dates are model- and region-specific; verify the status for your exact device rather than relying on the age of the product line.
5. Compare the functions, reliability, and supported life you get
Repair is strongest when one isolated problem is preventing dependable use and the repaired gadget will still satisfy your requirements. Replacement is stronger when several components are deteriorating, performance remains inadequate, or the repair leaves you with an unsupported or unreliable device.
Write down the functions you need—such as battery endurance, storage, ports, camera capability, accessibility features, software compatibility, or network support—and check both options against that list. A replacement that lacks a required feature is not a real alternative, even if its sticker price is lower.

Build a total-cost comparison
Use a simple worksheet rather than a percentage rule. The reviewed evidence does not establish a repair-cost threshold that works across gadgets, faults, and markets.

Then ask which option gives the better cost per year of dependable, supported use. This is not a precise investment calculation: future failures and support policies are uncertain. It is a guardrail against accepting a cheap repair that buys only a few weeks or a replacement that creates avoidable costs.
Choosing how to repair: DIY, independent shop, or authorized service
No channel wins on every criterion. Match the service to the fault, your skills, and the model.

For any shop, ask whether it can test the device before and after the repair and whether your data will remain intact. Back up data before service whenever the device still works. A repair that is technically successful but loses irreplaceable data is not a successful outcome for most owners.
When repair is usually the better choice
An isolated, well-understood failure
Repair is attractive when the symptom points to one replaceable part—such as a worn battery, damaged port, failed fan, or cracked display—and the rest of the gadget remains reliable. The quote should include the complete job, and the replacement part should be available for the exact model.

The device still meets your requirements
If performance, storage, connectivity, accessibility, and software compatibility remain adequate, repairing preserves a familiar setup and avoids the cost and learning curve of migration. This matters especially when a comparable replacement would require new accessories or paid software.
Coverage makes the out-of-pocket cost predictable
A covered repair or replacement can make the decision straightforward, provided the terms cover the fault and the service process does not impose unacceptable delay. Confirm those details in writing before authorizing work.
A repair extends meaningful supported use
Repair has a stronger case when the manufacturer’s security and operating-system support will continue for the period you need. A hardware fix should not be treated as a way to bypass imminent software obsolescence.

Several faults are emerging
Repeated charging problems, random shutdowns, overheating, storage errors, or physical damage in multiple areas indicate that the quoted repair may not be the last expense. Ask whether the technician found evidence of board, liquid, corrosion, or structural damage. If the answer is uncertain, price the risk of another failure rather than comparing only the first invoice.

A repair that depends on a discontinued part, inaccessible calibration software, or a specialist who cannot provide a repair warranty may leave you with a nonworking device and sunk costs. Availability is part of repairability, not an afterthought.

Support is ending or essential software no longer works
If security updates, operating-system upgrades, or required apps are ending, a repaired device may be unsafe or unable to perform the task that justified the repair. Confirm the support position for your model and region before spending money.
The gadget remains too limited even after repair
A repair does not add missing capability. If you need substantially better battery endurance, storage, network compatibility, ports, accessibility features, or performance, replacing the device may solve the real problem more effectively.
What environmental evidence can—and cannot—tell you
Keeping a working product in use can avoid some manufacturing and disposal impacts. The European Commission Joint Research Centre states: “Extending the lifetime of products is one of the most effective ways to reduce their environmental impact.” That is a general lifecycle principle, not a guarantee that repairing every individual gadget has a lower impact.

The JRC, using Eurostat data, reports that electrical and electronic equipment placed on the EU market rose from 7.6 million tonnes in 2012 to 14.4 million tonnes in 2022. It also reports around 4 million tonnes recycled or prepared for reuse. These are EU-level material-flow figures, not an estimate of the benefit of repairing one phone, laptop, or appliance. The environmental choice for a specific device depends on its materials, energy use, transport, repair method, replacement product, and eventual recycling.
Common mistakes that make a repair look better or worse than it is
- Using the cheapest new product as the comparison: compare against a replacement that actually meets your requirements.
- Ignoring diagnosis and shipping: include every fee and ask whether the diagnostic charge is refundable or credited.
- Assuming a repair quote is fixed: get the shop’s policy for hidden damage and approval of extra work.
- Buying a part before confirming the model: model revisions can use different batteries, screens, connectors, or firmware.
- Overlooking software support: a repaired connected device may still be insecure or incompatible.
- Starting a difficult DIY repair without a recovery plan: back up data, read the complete guide, and price the tools before opening the device.
- Treating a historical price as current: prices vary by model and location.
A practical approval checklist
Before you authorize a repair, you should be able to answer yes to these questions:
- Do I know the likely failed part and the technician’s confidence in that diagnosis?
- Does the total quote include diagnosis, labor, parts, tax, shipping, and a policy for additional faults?
- Is the exact part available, and does the service have the tools and calibration access required?
- What repair warranty will I receive, and how long will the work take?
- Will the repaired gadget remain secure, supported, and compatible with my required apps or services?
- Does it still meet my performance, battery, storage, connectivity, and accessibility needs?
- Have I compared it with a suitable new and refurbished replacement, including setup and accessory costs?
If several answers are no, replacement deserves serious consideration even when the repair quote looks modest. If the answers are yes and the repair restores dependable supported use, repairing is often the more rational choice.
A historical price example, not a rule
The FTC’s 2021 report to Congress described Apple’s out-of-warranty battery-replacement price for iPhone 6 and later models falling from $79 to $29 in 2018. That example illustrates why a battery repair can change the economics of an aging device, but it is a historical price, not a current quote or a universal savings estimate. Your model, location, part, and service channel determine today’s cost.
